I hit the river with a few lures I picked out from my grandpa's tackle box. Let's see if the smallies like them!

My father used to take me and my cousin in a row boat fishing we would use worms and catch perch & sunnies my father loved using jitterbugs I remember late one afternoon he caught a 5 lb bass and a 28 inch pickerel and he told we better go home before he emptied the lake . My Grandfather just passed last month, at the ripe old age of 93. A man who brought me kicking and screaming as a 10 year old to go fishing for Trout in a tiny stream with a worm and a piece of twig as a float. I fished for hours with nothing to show until that twig suddenly disappeared and I was in contact with something from another world...a six inch Trout. A tiny fish now, but a huge fish in the grander scheme, a moment that shaped the rest of my life. Thank you, Sir, for reminding me what is important in life...you brought a tear to my eye and a smile to my face.

My Grandma died in December (COVID :( ), and I didn't keep much from her home but the fishing box and a couple of rod/reel sets (they used to go fishing a lot with my Grandpa, coarse fishing, very popular in France). As an angler, it was very special for me to open such a box. The smell, all the gear that shows their fishing techniques, their little hacks... And all the gear that I recognized, because I went fishing with them when I was a kid. More important: this gear can still catch fish, so I can keep it alive, me and my children. That is what I call a treasure.

Thirty dollar lures? I was in a Bass Pro shop a while back, saw an attractive lure, and looked at the price. One hundred and fifty-nine dollars!!! Talk about sticker shock. I only paid a hundred bucks for my first car, and it ran for years. It's hard to believe anyone would pay that much for a lure that looked exactly like two dozen others hanging around the store that were selling for as little as five bucks.
@coreycouch49425 жыл бұрын

What fun. Your grandfather's lures were my lures when I was learning to fish. My dad put his faith primarily in River Runts, Lazy Ikes and Tadpollies. Some modern anglers talk about lures as "tools" that do certain jobs. For those of us who fished in the Fifties, these were our fishing buddies, and we had a lot of emotion about them. You do so well with the Whopper Plopper. You might try a Jitterbug when fish are hitting surface stuff. That's a fun lure . . . or fishing companion.

I was lucky enough to spend summers as a kid at our lake cabin in MN. My parents weren’t really into fishing but my grandparents would come stay with us a half dozen or so times throughout the summer and my grandpa would always take me out in his little green fishing boat he kept at our cabin. Somehow he could cup his hands over his mouth and do a spot on loon call. I never could quite figure out how he did it.
@cherokeelaketennessee78956 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing you are right. We have way too much to choose from and that's why my garage looks like a tackle shop. I won't have a tackle box to hand down, it will be more like a U-Haul truck full of crap. I picked up some tube baits, going to give them a try this week on the river.

This brought back asome memories. I inherited a tackle box and some lures from my grandfather, too. One of them was a beaten and battered Swimming Mouse, and a second was a brand new Swimming Mouse. My grandfather fished for fun, but he also fished for food, and he was a nightcrawler and redworm guy most often. We had an endless supply of both only forty yards from our house. A circle twenty-five feet wide along the ring, and with a diameter of about thirty yards where corncob had been spit out of a blower pipe from the grain elevator not far away. Most of those corncobs would pile up in the middle of the circle, and when the pikle was high enough, thoirty feet or so, they would burn it. But many fell outside the burn area, were rained on, and quickly rotted. This kept repeating every harvest season for forty years. The corncorns form a layer of black goo about tghree feet thick, and it was so packed with nightcrawlers and red worms that we could dig a week's worth in a few mionutes. Grandpa even made a good deal of money by selling worms. So there were only eight lures in the tacklebox, with two of them being the Swimming mouse. I caught a LOT of fish with the Swimming mouse before losing both to bass who wanted them more than I did. I eventually lost the other six to snags, but I'm really glad I had the chance to use them.

I'm 59 and was literally JUMPING UP AND DOWN when you showed us the lures you were going to throw today. I KNEW you would do well with all of them and smiled wide when I saw that you had pun BRAND NEW HOOKS on all of them.. YES..!! This is going to be very cool..! You & I both know that your Grand Dad was watching you today. And he wore a wide smile as you caught your fish. I want to thank you for making this video.

Thanks Warren! I picked up a Mitchell Garcia 301 reel and a rod from about that same time off EBay and plan on using that this summer to toss some old lures. Since this video I’ve inherited my other grandpa’s tackle box as well. Even though he was more of a walleye/pike fisherman he had a lot of the same lures. I’d imagine the tackle shops lure selection was a little slimmer back in those days but the shelves probably weren’t full of gimmicky lures or the same basic thing from five different companies. I was impressed with the action of those lures and they still catch fish!

@@ndyakangler When I was a young man and spending every spare dime on Tackle, I bought so many original Rebel Deep Wee R,'s , A rediculous number of the original Storm Wiggle Warts, Heddon Sonics, Heddon Zara Spooks and Bomber Model A's that I had to get a second box to hold my Soft baits and Spinnerbaits... Yeah. It got outa hand. My father defended me when ever my mother would complain. AT LEAST HE'S NOT BUYING DOPE..!!!

love the fact that you took out your grandpa's old lures to get them wet one more time, had to be a special day.
