We try Oaxacan food for the first time in Oaxaca City, Mexico with a local on this food tour. Oaxacan Cuisine is known as the heartland of Mexico. Most staple Mexican ingredients are grown here. Even the cooking methods of the comal, hot plate, and grilling originated here. Come along on this food tour as we start out in the Mercado de la Merced where we try Chocolate de Atole, Salsa de Queso, Sausage, grind our own corn and make fresh blue corn tortillas for Huevos al Comal with Holy Leaf. Next we try some of the best Mamelas in town, stop at an artisanal Chocolate shop, make our way to Mercado Sanchez Pascuas where we get some juice and try out the native fruits and vegetables. Next we head to the Benito Juarez market, where we eat Chapulines, or grass hoppers. Last but not least we make it to the meat alley in Mercado 20 de Noviembre and then walk over to Comedor Leo and get some of the best Mole we've ever had in our lives. Last but not least we finish out our day at a nice restaurant, Las Quince Letras, to test out our knew knowledge and order a big Oaxacan dinner.

We're Faris and Lisa
A travel couple from Metro Detroit, MI. We met in business school and started traveling immediately post graduation in 2016 while maintaining automotive marketing positions. We’ve traveled to over 35 different countries together and still can’t get enough!
In April 2021, we made the leap and quit our 9-5 jobs to follow our dreams of full time travel. We sold our house, donated all of our belongings and moved into Tina. Now we document all of our travels via travel vlog style! Subscribe to our KZfaq channel and Newsletter to follow along on our adventure as we explore North America.

As a daughter of indigenous parents from Oaxaca, I think you guys represented Oaxaca the best! I always watch KZfaq videos of Oaxaca and tourist typically say or do things that I don’t really agree but you guys showed so much respect and open mindedness for my culture! Thank you so much! Next time you go to Oaxaca, make sure you guys check out the Mujeres del barro rojo un My parents hometown of San Marcos Tlapazola, 45 mins away from Oaxaca City!

Jocabed, thank you so much for the kind comment. We are so happy we were able to capture the Oaxacan food culture correctly! It was really important for us to get a local guide to help explain and teach us all the traditional ways. We would love to check out Mujeres del barro rojo next time!

My wife and I love watching your videos! They’re all creative, informative, and fun! Have you listed your camera and editing equipment/software on any previous posts? If not, would you mind sharing? We are beginning to travel more and would like to be able to document and share our experiences.

Hi Rich! Sorry for missing your comment. Yes, our camera gear is in the description. Faris has been doing freelance videography since 2017 so he has accumulated a lot of gear. We always recommend buying something in your budget first and nowadays an iPhone is so versatile. We like using Final Cut Pro for software because it is the most compatible with our MacBooks and makes the whole editing process faster.

A lot of ppl who don’t know about history don’t realize Mexican food before colonization was and is very healthy and organic. Ppl just assume all Mexican food is tacos or unhealthy food…but they are thinking after the Colonization period. Thank you Mexico for tomatoes in the Italian foods, chocolate for the European chocolate bars and vanilla..
