When you've got a list of non binary names you like, what is the next step? How do you go about trying on your new name? In this video I give tips for trying on names, and how to decide if the names you've picked are right for you. Remember that being non binary is not determined by whether you change your name!

I have a slightly funny story about trying a Starbucks name. I was going to test out an alternate spelling of my birth name and it went kind of sideways. I asked the barista to use (not my real name here, just an example) "Eli with a y" (i.e. Ely), and it came back "Yli" 😂 sometimes Starbucks takes fate into its own hands, but you can get .. interesting options out of it.

For me, I don’t hate my birth name. In fact, it’s so unique that no one else has one like it. But I’ve been trying to tell myself that it could only refer to me because it’s so unique, and it doesn’t feel right anymore. Every time I tell someone my given name, they always tell me how pretty it is. It’s been that way my whole life. As a kid, I was proud of the fact that I had such a unique name, but now, I think I’ve grown tired of it. It is a pretty name, it’s just a name that should be somewhere else now. It deserves a host that will love it forever. My middle name is very generic and average, but it’s also feminine, so if I do change my name, I need to change my middle name too. I think I like Kay as my first name. Who likes Kay?

I changed my name a couple years ago. But I feel like it's too personal and weird to have as a legal name. So, I've been wrecking my brain trying to find a new 'official' name. I hate still having my birth name everywhere. 🤔
@AWylde

Ah Thats tough. It’s almost like the name you chose is “for you,” but you don’t want the courts or the cops to be calling you that. It definitely sounds like another name is out there for you though, if your birth name is making you uncomfortable!

Oh that reminds me of something really cool. There’s this one bank, credit card company thingy that’s released a credit card where you can choose your name. It’s for trans and enby people who don’t want to change it legally! (I don’t know much about it, I just heard a little bit about it.)

I am still discovering myself as a non-binary person. And I feel like I have no right to have a new name. I don't hate my birth name, I'm used to it, however, I never felt like it was me. I know when they speak they are redirecting me. It's just weird, I remember being at school and writing my name over and over on paper because it didn't feel real, it didn't feel like mine. I think about my mother a lot, I know she chose that name with affection, it's a very beautiful name, it's just... it doesn't sound like me.

I think that you have every right to change your name to something you love. You don’t have to. And it may have consequences or be challenging for some people. And you may choose not to which is completely valid. But you are well within your rights to affect change upon your life in whatever way you see fit.

I have the same feeling of not having a right to a new name, but it’s because I was named after my grandmother and my own mother. Because of it, I get compared to my grandmother (who died before I was even born so I didn’t know her) and it makes me so uncomfortable. For that, I want a new name, and also because I want something more gender neutral.

Not a Starbucks near me, but there's a burrito place where you can name your burrito, and for takeaway they call out the name of your burrito. I definitely used it multiple times to try out a name or to get my daily dose of euphoria now that I've chosen one.

I'm slowly transitioning to using my first initial only (switched my email name, name at the gym, email signature). I wondered if you might be willing to talk about choosing to have your channel say A. Wylde instead of Atlas?

It’s because I’m not 100% sold yet. About a decade ago I changed my last name, and I used it for several consecutive years before I decided to change it legally. I haven’t decided yet if I want to have Atlas be MY NAME FOREVER. So I’m leaving room to be flexible if I need it.

Okay so I'm struggling a bit. I came out a couple months ago as Dani which was my new name, my brother also uses Danny as a nickname but said he was cool with it until lately when he asked me if I could change my name. Before choosing Dani I has took into consideration that it felt weird to me that me and him would be going by the same type of thing- though he was trying to use a more professional nickname. When I got okay with it with reassurance from my mom and sibling that it was cool, I took some time and came out to the rest of my siblings. I just got used to Dani and now I need to pick a new name and no other name seems to fit so I've been nameless for maybe a month and I'm stuck here. He keeps asking for updates as he doesn't want me to be used to the name Dani (other siblings still call me that as I don't want to confuse them if I don't have a new name) or other people to be used to it that it's hard to start using another name when I choose one.. I'm non binary, more masculine but don't want a wayyy to masculine sharp sounding name. here's my list but idk about any of them: Ash, Billie, Riley, Devyn, Eli, Blue, August

If I change my name again, it'll be the third time I've changed it. That's fine, but the two names I've gone by before have lasted for months before I changed them so I feel kinda bad that everyone might have to adjust again

I think about this too. I changed my last name, and then my first name, and I am not 100% certain that I have found my forever name (if that exists?). It’s tough but so far it’s been worth it

Hi. Question. I'm 13 and nonbinary. I can't really go to Starbucks on my own to try out some new names, and the only person I really feel comfortable asking to do this is my sister, and I just recently came out as nonbinary and don't want to ask more of her. Any suggestions?

I know it’s been a while but I’m in the same situation, try referring to yourself as a name you want to try in your head. That’s what I’ve been doing along with asking friends to use a name I want to try

When I came out as a she/they person, I changed my name to Archer. When I tried out they/she I changed it to Devon, I felt it better. But NOW, after over a year, I don't identify with it anymore, I feel like a they/them, and I don't want to change it again because I feel like I'll annoy everyone because I keep changing it AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Thanks this video is really helpful. Im genderfluid and my name is Kim but when im habing days wear i feel more like a man sometimes Kim just doesnt feel right so I'm trying to figure out the name I want to go by on those days. I'm thinking Kam or Kameron but idk which one id rather have and if either of then are really the name i wanna go by. I do wanna experiment with this more when im an adult and have other friends and maybe even partners I can try using these names with but for now I just feel like i dont have a lot of options for experimenting with names and I'm just not really comfortable doing that just yet

I think Kam is a great name! For any gender, so it could also be used all the time if that’s what felt right. If you’re not in a position to try it out with friends or partners, see if you can find a supportive group online and ask them to try it out!

I have a cis male relative named Kim (in the US), but Kam is also a good name! It's okay if you're not comfortable trying names in practice yet too. I'm still in the mental 'trying on' stage myself, just thinking about what those different names would feel like.

@@Rettequetette Yup, I've met more men than women named Kim in Norway, but also, one of the most well known Norwegian queer activists is a lesbian woman named Kim. Also, Kim is the most common family name in South Korea, and comes from the hanja 金 which means metal/iron/gold.
