Trying out my new MLA-30 active magnetic loop antenna

3 жыл бұрынAbout a month ago I picked up a MLA-30 magnetic loop antenna on eBay for about $40. I mounted it to a 1" diameter PVC pipe with a zip tie and two screws. In this video, I demonstrate its reception of MW and SW bands with my Chromebook and RTL-SDR v3. It's far better than my long wire as far as noise and fading and it's really impressive overall. Keep in mind, as I point out in the end of the video, that it needs its USB-powered bias-tee to give good reception.

I reckon you should try rotating the antenna when using it below 5MHz. Certainly on MW, you will get better signals from along the plane of the loop.

Really appreciate your thorough test! I am now quite interested in both the loop and RTL SDR v3. I'm very impressed by the low noise- my area is plagued with rfi beyond my control and this looks like a good, inexpensive solution.

Thanks! You are very welcome! I am in a rural area though and my long wire with a NooElec balun (unun) has little noise too.

Use ferrite chokes around the house and remove noise generating point, like radios, cell phones lamps etc. Overall good demo I just ordered one getting into SDR I'll use it with my SW in the mean time .

Please keep in mind that the MLA-30 supplied biasT is reported to put out a lot of noise. In the future you may want to use a better quality/quieter biasT or run it from an SDR that has it's own biasT.

Good to know! The RTL-SDR v3 has its own bias-tee, I think. Could I use that?

@@walnuthills11 I'm not familiar with the RTL-SDR but as long as it's biasT meets the electrical requirements of the mla-30 I don't see why not.

I don’t want to be disrespectful but you should remove the overgrown above ground pool that’s filled with weeds. It’s unsightly.

O ah K ah .. you can talk in a cute itiala voice ah ! ... what you comparing this antenna to a ah > ? < you pick up a cool sounding station and thats cool, oh mama mia ! they a close a ... any way ah next time maybe tune in to WWV on 2.5 MHz and 5 MHz and 10 MHz anf 15 MHZ and show us how than dam thing works ?ah ? more imperical data a and less cute voice. ah ..... TNX OM ah N7WDF
