Hello, it's me. The worst player to play The Long Dark 😅 So, attempt 3 - knocking down the difficulty a little bit and see how we fair with this one. Constantly overweight, constantly getting attacked by wolves and constantly finding myself in trouble. This game is tough, but addictive!

Next time you make a fire you will see the "take a torch" option when you click on the fire. Every torch you pull out reduces the burn time of the fire by 10 minutes. But it's good to have half a dozen torches in your inventory. You can use one torch to explore a darkened interior, and only use one match to light it -- or you can use 5 matches that burn out quickly. The matches are a scarce resource, and get more scarce the higher the difficulty level. So you want to get in the habit of using torches. You can also light a torch and then use the torch to light your campfire or stove. That way, if your first attempt to light the fire fails, you can try again with the torch without wasting 2 or 3 matches. You can also use the torch for finding loot in dark spaces. And for scaring away wolves. Three good reasons to get used to crafting and using torches! It will save you box loads of matches in the long run.

Can openers let you open cans without losing contents. If you have nothing but your hands, you smash them open and can lose a ton of the contents. Knives can also be used for less loss.

I'm sure you eventually noticed, but when reading books you have to finish the entire hour. If you cancel, you lose the time spent. It's stupid, and it makes small-time tasks harder to multitask with. Fixing clothes and some harvests take less than an hour, and I tend to do that while waiting for water to boil in cans. Also, you can select the item that's cooking/boiling and pass the time until it's done. Handy for when there's only like 10 minutes left and you don't want to just stand there.

I think you need to be less self conscious about how "bad" you are at this game. The Long Dark is brutal and has a learning curve. You are playing on a pretty hard difficulty too. The important thing is that you're learning. A bad player would be like "I shot the bear so many times and it didn't die, it's the game's fault for being bad." But instead you just realized really quick, shooting the bear with a revolver is a bad idea. I'm continuing to watch not because you're good at the game, there's plenty of channels who showcase that, but because you're smart enough to learn and I get to re-experience the game for the first time through your playthrough. I'm having a good watch.

I appreciate your words there, thank you! Yes, I think I went into this feeling confident in survival games and then realised how focused this is on the survival aspects - it's a good thing and I enjoy the challenge but yes, can be punishing for sure!

This game is actually about hoarding things. Hoarding ALL the things. Set up a place where you dump all the things you won't need for a short journey and then return later when you find a more suitable long term place to stay. This is especially doable once you get a rifle, as the journeys become less risky. As the game goes on, the temperature gets colder and eventually all tools wear out, and nothing respawns except some plants, wildlife, and coal in the mines. You'll wish you could hoard even more once you start surviving a month or longer and realize you have no more lantern fuel :)

ohhh that's good to know then - so I don't need to carry it all with me but I need to make sure I have a base of sorts. I guess if I hoarde to much though I'll need to travel back across the maps - hoping the inventory stays between map transitions!

@@proroguebear Inventory remains exactly where you leave it. You can leave items on the ground and they will stay there, as well. This is especially useful for stacks of firewood, books, and jerry cans if you're lucky to find a bunch of those.

@@proroguebear Oh, but keep in mind that food still degrades over time, but packaged food will decay very slowly. Decay speed is difficulty-based. Storing food outdoors (in a container) will make it last far longer. Deep freeze, basically.

@TheAzrai when your cooking skill is 5 you can eat zero food with no consequences

You can craft a torch with sticks, fuel and cloth in your inventory and also grab torches from any fire

Also you should start in mystery lake as its the easiest location to start and there are power lines to follow in a storm

You have to throw the flare in his face makes him run away, but the game gave you 3 marine flares as a hint that there are timberwolfs about and you will shortly meet them haha as I have.

I tried Mystery Lake last episode and quickly died in the dam although that was for me stepping on an electrical wire. Going to try and make my way from East to West in this run and see how we go!

@proroguebear timberwolves are a pack of 3 or more wolves they have a moral bar at the bottom, when they activate throwing a flare at their face usually makes it run off then come back again until the bar disappears. Keep picking the flare up and re throw same flare. If you don't have a flare you can quickly start a fire, if it's not windy add a lot of fuel and grab a torch and throw it. I played wintermute that kinda has a basic tutorial. It is a hard game and have died loads of times. Never lasted 50 days.

Is your game up to date? I’ve seen others that have like recipe books and new foods for stews and lots of new little bits to grab, still loving the play through and progress of a new player. Keep it up!

I think so? It's on Steam and just the normal update. I know an update just came out yesterday I think with Cougars and stuff but haven't played it since that update yet. Not sure if there's a beta branch or something or if that's with mods?

ahhh I don't have the DLC for this yet - it's just the base game that's why!
