I noticed that you still have some of the regular birdseed... If you want to use it up, why don't you put a small birdfeeder inside the chicken area? That way, the seeds that get dropped to the ground either get eaten by the chickens directly, or start to sprout and then get eaten by the Girls as fodder!

Becky, I just wanted to say thank you for suggesting we use a photo organizer to organize our seeds. It’s been a game changer for me. I used to “organize” my seeds in mason jars but having them organized in the photo organizer is 10x better. I used a label maker to label what was in each container and put a desiccant packet in each container to ensure the seeds stayed dry. For those interested, Hobby Lobby sells these organizers. It’s the same brand that’s sold on Amazon but it’s significantly cheaper through Hobby Lobby.

I have a kitchen sieve that my coriander seeds fit through. I run them threw a few times. Then pour little bunches on a terrycloth towel and carefully pour the seeds in a bowl. That gets 90% of the trash out. I then give myself a set amount of time to pick through and pick out what I can. When that time is up, I’m okay with a few bits of ground up stems or leaves.
@sarahtrew9331
@sarahtrew9331 Жыл бұрын
You can also spread them out on a tray or large dish and put a fan on them on a low setting which blows the chaff away and the seeds stay behind (you can also achieve this by putting them in a bowl and tossing them up on a breezy day and catching the seeds in the bowl while the chaff blows away) ☺️
@ilkederks6598
@ilkederks6598 Жыл бұрын
Or, and it is still labour intensive, you can spread the seeds and the rest on one half of a tray, til it slightly, and wiggle the tray. The seeds are round and wil travel to the other side of the tray, the stems and leaves wil stay behind.

An idea for the coriander seeds. I've seen this done once and it worked fairly well. You use 2 paper bags. You take the first one and poke small holes in the bottom, something like a pen would work. Then stick that bag inside a second bag with no holes. Stuff all the plants in it (Like you did) but crunch the dried plants while they are still in the double bags. Then all the seeds fall to the bottom. Gently separate the 2 bags, shake it a bit, letting the seeds fall through the holes into the second bag. You'll keep most of the plant mess in the first bag.

Seems to me your kitchen is functioning very well. The convenience of having the baking stuff in the deep drawer seems just awesome. Not all over cluttering counters with canister and not stuck high on shelves but just handy right where you use it! Seems like the mason jar spices are working well too. Fit perfectly pretty on the shelf and handy for cooking!

To clean your seeds, all you need is a windy day and a couple of trays. Pour the seeds from one tray to the other and let the wind carry the chaff away. Most seeds are heavy enough to fall into the waiting tray but some will get away. I usually wait for a cold front to blow through to do this, since seed saving is a Winter activity for me. The other option is to simply plant the chaff with the seeds. It will compost down right there beneath the growing plants. Charles Dowding has a great video on this. ~ Lisa

Congrats on getting your hands dirty for a fall garden! What we do when planning a fall garden is we look at our average first frost date, then we look at the "days to maturity" for our plants and count backward at least that number of days from our average first frost date for frost-tender plants. For the ones we can grow after the frost, we count back 8 to 10 weeks from that date to start them inside in cooler temperatures than what is outside (since too much heat can inhibit some seeds from germinating well). Honestly, we try not to get too deep into all that - we are mid-summer, so we're just ready to pop in second round of summer-hardy seeds. Happy with what we are harvesting now, but believing we can grow so much more if we try! 😁

I had a great surprise this year - I'm in north central Indiana. When my cilantro went to seed last fall, I didn't get it cut back until December or January. This spring I had volunteer cilantro coming up in April. I don't think you have to take the hulls off the coriander seeds for them to grow. I decided to intentionally let the plant go to seed and just a week or two ago, I pulled the seeds off and sprinkled them in the dirt and they are sprouting new cilantro! Although our winter was relatively mild last year for the most part, we did have a week or two around Christmas that was brutally cold. (If I remember right, Christmas day was -45 with the wind chill.) Also, my cilantro is planted in a raised container. I don't know if this is a fluke or not but I'm going to try it intentionally this fall to see what happens.

They make a hot bird seed mix that has chili peppers in it. The birds can’t taste the heat from the chili peppers but the squirrels can and they don’t like it.

Becky, just a thought. The bird seed that sprouts is great to use as a green manure crop that can be slashed before flowering and left to enrich the soil or just dug into the beds and left to decompose for 4-6 weeks before planting heavy feeding crops. I've done this often with just plain canary seed and always get a good result😊

I put my coriander seeds through a cheap sieve I bought at the dollar store. You have to do it a few times but you can pick out what little junk gets through. Your garden and harvest is beautiful.

Growing up I remember my dad planning out the garden. He would start direct seed when the packet said , pre- planting seeds for transplant and then a later crop for cooler weather plants He learned it from his father in law. Who only planted flowers. He nurtured his rose garden and had at least 12 varieties of roses. But temperature and time of year was critical for some plants. So dad planned out his garden. What didn't work he changed when he planted. I think his planning on what he wanted to grow truly helped. Back then we only had books to refer to. After this years crops, it will give you a better idea on what to grow, when to grow it, and what temperature is best to start them. Especially since your in a brand new zone area. I wish I could grow a garden, apartment living doesn't offer space.

For seeds and fluff I take a sheet of paper and sort of hold it together, not folded but like a slide - pour seeds and fluff at the top and let the seeds roll down into a container or another sheet of paper. Then I have a spot to put the fluff part in the trash. Sometimes I have to do it a couple of times, but it's easy and semi satisfying.

Hi Becky! I've had a Squirrel Buster brand bird feeder for years. Squirrels try, but they don't get in. I also got fed up with the mess from regular bird seed and buy a "patio blend" which is just peanuts and shelled sunflower seeds. Thank you for your wonderful videos!

Becky, thanks to you and your wonderful channel, I was able to make sure my zucchini got pollinated and now I have like 4 of them and they're growing so fast! I have a squash that looks like those round ones you have. I have beans coming in, I got 2 snow peas off of my teeny little plant. They were delicious! All my plants are starting to thrive through things I've learned through you. So I just want to say thank you!

Hi Becky. I'd put my Coriander seeds/soil through a wire sieve/collander and wash them that way, then turn them out onto some flour sack towels or paper towels, allow to dry out in your potting room❤🌼.

I made the Dreamy Chicken recipe the day after you posted the video. I did the wetter more risotto type using more broth and I did reverse the order of sautéing the chicken and onion garlic mixture to get the chicken the deeper flavor as you suggested. It was magnificent. We immediately made it part of our permanent recipe collection. I’m finishing up the of leftovers as I type. Thanks for the yummy share!!!

I was so glad you gave the tip about the flour tortillas not doing well in a tortilla press a few videos back. I could not for the life of me figure out why my flour tortillas never turned out -- they tasted fine but were really thick, like pie crust consistency. Then I heard your tip and a light bulb went off -- duh! Made a batch using the rolling pin and they were perfect!

I just harvested my coriander seeds. I use a lot of it every year. I just use a kitchen sieve and rub everything into it. The leaves and smaller parts are crushed small enough that they fall out through the sieve. I then take the time to pick out the little sticks. The seeds are left over and are really clean by that point!

To separate seeds like your coriander from the other stuff like seed hulls and little bits, it's called "winnowing." You can Google different ways to do it, but the easiest way is to be outside on a day with a light breeze and rub handfuls of the seed stuff in your bag between your hands over top of a large bowl or bin. The seeds are heavier and will fall into the bin, and the chaff (other bits) will blow out. Sometimes it takes a couple times. Some people do it with a fan. 😊 Hope this is helpful. Love watching your videos!

We have a Droll Yankee Flipper, with the motorized spinner. It will seem expensive, but think of it as both a bird feeder AND entertainment. They don't hurt squirrels, they just fling them off at a high rate of speed. WEEEEEE! So worth it.
