The 2017 Chris Melling runout was an honest-to-god viral pool video, and possibly the most visually impressive shot was the final 4-rail bank. 4-rail bank shots are almost always low-percentage shots, but when your opponent is a former world champion and you're playing an elimination game, the pockets can be particularly unforgiving. But with two unreal shots under his belt, Chris Melling drilled the 4-railer like it was hanging over the pocket.
As it turns out, Chris appears to have done the hard work on the 7-ball shot. Please enjoy responsibly. If you like these videos or have a suggestion for a shot, leave a comment below and I'll give it a try.
Check out Part 1 here: • Trying The Chris Melli...

The hard part is not to get the ball into the pocket, but to see the path.

And have the guts to play it! Playing a plant or bank shot can always go slightly off what you expected. I doubt a lot of players would take on that shot even if they thought it was on.

@tyvek05 the visualization of that shot was easy? I'd take a strong guess that even most pros wouldn't have seen the shot, especially considering how close he was to make contact with the 9 (meaning that the shot almost hadn't even been available). Just setting up the shot and making it isn't hard, because you literally just need to play a straight stop shot. But for him to see the shot being available and play position in such a way that he just needs to shot a stop shot is the fascinating part about it.

False. If the game was rotation probably true. But the game is eight balls. You have to take the shot that was on, or you will have a slim chance again on the table.

The question isn't whether this shot was easy to do based on the table angles but rather; would you have worked out the angle needed without seeing Melling do it first. His true skill, IMO, was visualising that geometry. Great video.

I really like your final question, but you nailed the comment about it not being the shot that is hard, its the vision to see and then execute the shot. For fun you should set up that shot and ask random pool players to see what they would do.

Yeah I think it's a lot of the setup. Since I saw the original shot I try this shot every once in a while and it is a hard shot to adjust for with English but if it's straight and going to go thru that diamond and the felt has some run on it, it will go. I'm surprised he didn't even mention the diamond he is shooting thru.

It looks harder and was impressive because of all the noise on the table and the travel distance. The shot itself is something you could teach a beginner. Seeing the shot and going for it in a major tournament was the impressive part. Mechanically, there are way harder shots.

The overall brilliance of this shot is that no-one else in the world would even see the option from where he lands on the 7 (after an ironically terrible shot on the 6) to leave a straight 4 cushion bank shot and even then at first glance it doesn't even look on as the other balls just look in the way. So it's the equivalent of setting up a difficult but consistent trick shot and being able to play it, only it happened in a competitive match. Back when I had to practice 9-ball, I was a joke of a player but was very good at combos and swerve shots. So when I first saw shots 1 and 2 a while back, my honest reaction was "that's impressive and also the type of shot I'd play and get close to fairly consistently". But this one was just off the charts in vision and execution. Definitely the best shot I've ever seen, just unreal.

You already gave the correct answer to your question :) The more rails you use to play a kick shot, the more margin for error you have, because the rails are "self correcting" the angles. But only if you are hitting rails in a way where you have running english on the cueball.

The 4 rail bank shot is much more forgiving than you would think a ball travelling that distance and bouncing off 4 rails could be. Threading the ball through all the traffic and all the other elements make Melling's shot a classic. In Ronnie O'Sullivan's American Hustle, he plays some carom and the carom player mentions there are "tracks" around the table. There are certain banks and kicks, like this and the 3 rail shot, that once you make it you can shift it a little bit or sometimes a lot. If you recognize your position is close you can actually have a good chance of making it and looking like a hero if you know how to adjust it slightly.

As you suggested, and in my opinion, the 4 railer has some self-correcting properties regarding the balance of speed, English, and starting angle. A thorough explanation sounds a bit daunting, I would love to hear Dave Alciatore's description of this.

The shot was always there. What really amazes me is how Chris spotted it immediately. For the first couple of times I re-watched the original video I still found it hard to to see the line beforehand... amazing. Regarding the question: well, shots like these can also be made on a snooker table. Sometimes I guess you just see the line, and if it's a natural and you don't have to force it, it can go in. If you do that a lot you tend to know the angles of the table. However, these shots get impossible to judge if you have to try and make something happen, like putting side on it.

I have noticed that on 3+ rail shots, the reversing english off the 3rd and/or 4th rail corrects for any accidental english put on the object ball on inital contact. Thats why I find 3 rail banks to be easier than 2 rail banks.
@davidfarinaofficial
@davidfarinaofficial 5 жыл бұрын
I think the answer for your question is, that the cueball is coming in a forgiving angle after the last touch with the bank. Its, less or more 45 degrees and straight into the hole. If youre going at a steeper angle into a pocket the margin of error increases dramatically. I think the most important part is, that this is maybe not a very complicated shot when reproducing or to execute physically at all. But coming up with the idea, finding the right spot and follow the path of the yellow ball in mind to exclude any kisses with other balls, during a tournement with lots of viewers, camera all on you, under pressure etc etc. This is truly remarkable, no matter how easy it is to execute in the end.

Wow! Way better than I anticipated, now I'm curious how to rank a shots difficulty. I don't play pool but it seems you have mechanically difficult shots that require the cue ball to behave a certain way, and then other shots that require a certain geometry. Compared to your last video it seems the former are far more difficult but I have no idea why

There is a definite factor of the object ball correcting itself to a natural path, but the reason this shot was so special is because of the thought process before it was played. It's a very easy shot to replicate and very hard to think of. I think the first shot of Chris's run out was by far the best.

Just has be set up perfectly. I went out immediately after I saw it and made it maybe like 4 times put of 40 or 50. Tried it twice in games and missed both, simply because it isn't often that the planets align to where it is the correct shot. There is usually an easier one rail bank on. The position of the 8 made it the right shot for Chris to take on

I have made this shot for the game match before (not as congested as the table that Melling did it on) . If you are familiar with the diamond system..it is not that brutal. this shot was easily the easiest shot to make out of the three but it was amazing to see him see the shot and attempt it. The hard part is to see the line(which was straight in this case and the reason you made it on the sixth try and twice in a row) and the path(since you do not want collisions). this shot would be significantly harder if you didnt have the cue ball in a straight line with the perfect angle to make the 4 rail bank and if you did not already know that it wouldnt clip any other balls in the way. its like an (half)automatic trickshot that you just setup and hit straight in the middle and it goes in.
@cosmicraysshotsintothelight
@cosmicraysshotsintothelight 4 жыл бұрын
Multi-rail banks are difficult because the nose of the rail imparts spin on the ball and subsequent rail strikes have that spin incorporated into the rail strike and subsequent roll angle. The greater the strike angle, the more spin that gets imparted as it leaves the rail. Strike pressure also weighs in. Your Melling 4 rail shot works differently as your strike velocity increases, and that effects second and third rail exit angles.

It's the sort of shot/pattern that good carom players learn and become very good at spotting and executing. Pulling it off in 8 Ball it's more the creativity, breadth of knowledge and bravery to back that if you think the shot is on, than the actual execution of the shot. Shot 2 was the real toughy in terms of simply executing it.

Regarding you last question - yes, it is because 4 rail banks and even 3 rail banks self correct to some degree, but are only possible within a narrower set of ranges than 1 rail banks. And he just happened to have a straight shot within the narrow range and took advantage of it. Play around with it and you'll see what I mean. Or take 2 rails off and play it 2 rails into the same corner (that is, same path, but shorter, ending in same pocket). I think you'll actually find it harder.

4 rails is actually pretty easy. As long as you get close to the right angle without any crazy spin, it goes in very often. The more rails you hit, the more accurate you are. Watch 3 cushion players. If they can they go 4 and 5 rails cuz it just works so well. Same with snooker escapes.

The angles were pure. It was simply middle of the cue ball to the middle of the object ball. No high or low spin, no left or right spin. Simple stop shot to stop the cue ball to keep it from interfering with the object ball (and to have an angle on the 8-ball). You just had to hit it hard as hell and trust that the angles were pure.
