As we all know, the long-standing Monza lap record was recently bested by Kimi Raikkonen...But can I beat it with a car from the same era as it was set?

Your final time would've qualified for 7th in the 2004 Italian GP, ahead of Kimi Raikonnen's 1:20.877. Barrichello's pole time was a 1:20.089. Not far off in that aspect. ;)

Hi Jimmy, great lap. The lap record is hard to beat because kerbs changed a lot, in 2004 were very very low, now are smaller and higher, so is impossible to get the chicane like Montoya did

I met Juan Pablo Montoya and Helio Castroneves when they came to town for the 6hrs of the Glen this year. It was during the world cup and they came into the restaurant I worked at with their families and we all watched the world cup together, talked about racing. They were extremely nice people. On the inside, I was fangirling like fucking crazy, but I had to keep it cool 😂. Edit: When they came into the restaurant, I was like no way?!?! Montoya came in and I was like holy shit this is awesome. And then Castroneves followed him in man, I was like are you frickin kidding me?!?!

Montoya is labeled as an angry person because he doesn't like the media and being pressured to much (When he was in Colombia, he was having lunch with his family in a restaurant and then a person came up and asked for a autograph, Montoya said ok but after he finished lunch, the fan got angry and said, "No, man, whatever, you are a son of a b****" Montoya is not the type of guy who loves attention, he's more a normal and chill guy.

If it makes you feel any better Mr Wanglebork :), even though the layout was the same in 2004 Monza is actually noticably slower now than it was in the past due to the introduction of sausage curbs on the inside of the first two chicanes. They were introduced in 2009 to reduce the amount by which drivers could cut those corners. If you look at older footage you'll notice they took a much shallower line back then.

Juan Pablo Montoya is one of the most underrated drivers in racing history in my opinion. He’s one of the few drivers that tried his hand in almost any Motorsport imaginable and was successful more often than not. Everything from F1, to Indycar, to NASCAR, to Sports Cars. Absolute legend. It’s just unfortunate that here in the States more people know him for his lack of success in Stock Cars than his success in the open wheel worlds of Indycar and F1.

In case anyone wondering, that 357km/h equates to about 221.8mph. Was interesting to see that despite downforce settings changing that top end varied by no more than 3km/h implying a faster parabolica made up for the added drag?

Gave this a go a while ago. Managed a 1:19.946 with a setup I stole from a KZfaq vid. Was pretty happy with the lap since it was faster than the pole time from that year. I find that if you drive the F2004 through the corners using the traction control you can gain large amounts of time on exit. For example, going into the second chicane I brake quite a bit earlier but I am on the throttle just after the first apex.

As much as I like the V10s, there are a lot of factors that stop the cars from being comparable. First things first there is a 14 year difference. If they went back to V10 engines instead of V6Ts, there is a very high chance that they could be faster than what we see now, let alone a 100% guarentee that they would be faster than the engines from 2004. Two: These cars had grooved tires, significantly reducing lap times and cornering speed. If they had slicks instead of grooved tires, they would have been so much faster. Three: The cars were of course lighter and more aerodynamically sound in the main body of the car because they can be more narrow in the fuselage area because of refuling. Finally Four: The cars now are using Hybrid power. It relies completely on an electric assisted motor for its extra power. Meanwhile the cars back until 2014 were all Naturally aspirated. A completly different use of power flow as well as a differnt engine layout altogether. All in all, there are too many what ifs to judge if a V10 can truly be faster than a modern V6T. Especially since all the drivers of these cars are retired, out of their prime, or... other unfortunate things had happened. It is highly possible though that a V10 can be faster than a modern V6T
@miyu4043
@miyu4043 6 жыл бұрын
On a hot lap a V10 could surely be faster than a V6T. In a race though ... With the current regulation of a maximum fuel load of 105kg and no refueling, even the slowest V6T would lap any V10 multiple times in any race.But if the FIA would allow both engine types and lift all restrictions on fuel consumption and allow refueling, that would make things interesting. It would make V10s competetive. And without restrictions in fuel flow, the V6Ts could also produce more power than they do now. It would be a battle of higher power but higher weight V10s vs. lower power and lower weight V6Ts. With the right balance in regulations, that could be quite interesting :)

I LOVE the old V10's, but really man; F1's ruination started with the introduction of traction control in 2001. It also ruined the purity of the sound of the V10's into and out of corners. For me the period of 1998 to 2000 - incidentally the Mika Hakkinen vs. Michael Schumacher golden years - was the golden era of F1 of the last 25-30 years. The cars were magnificent and the whole point of F1 driver's skill - throttle control - was at its apex. There were rumors that Ferrari was running undetectable traction control in 2000 and that's what precipitated the introduction of traction control officially in 2001, but for me it was over at that point for the sport. Hakkinen's heart also wasn't in it at that point anymore. I think he realized what was to come and that it wasn't purely about driver skill anymore. Loved this video, Jimmy; especially how you grew into attacking the Lesmo's.

To be fair back in 2004 the curbs did not include the green astroturfs or cement like it does today, so you had to stay even in a tighter line in every chicane or you would be dancing on grass. Even the parabolica looks like a road crossing a football field back in 2004. So hats off to those who made history or just broke a record back in 2004 on any track.

I've always wondered what V10-era cars would've been capable of on slicks. I know the complexities of F1 engineering probably means they were designed to run exclusively on grooved tires, but the F2004 and other contemporary cars still hold or held records for a long time. Could only imagine what they could've done on a set of superduperhypermegasoft rainbow-walled Pirelli slicks.
@renerodrigues561
@renerodrigues561 6 жыл бұрын
Quintin Krivacek those grooved tyres aren't as much of a disadvantage as many people think. They were made in the tyre war era which led to ridiculously grippy tyres. Compared to today's artificially degrading cheese tyres . And the 2004 car had traction control and engines only had to last only 1 race instead of 7 like in 2018 as well . Plus they had twice the fuel flow limit that v6s have now.

I tried this it is so ridiculous how hard this is to do maybe you could try it with the real car there is a mod for it.

On this track it's near impossible to match the record, just because of the fact that you cannot ride the kerbs. Watch Montoya's lap, he is with the whole car over them, whereas in-game if you smell them you bouce like a ball.

The streaming shows the left eye, that's why it looks slightly shifted to the left.

His driving can improve. At the moment he is making his chicanes go on for too long, needs to get the car to change direction a tad quicker. Second lesmo he can use the inside kerb a bit more to carry more speed through it. Same with ascari entry, there is room for more time particularly on entry.

Correct me If I'm wrong but, back in 2004 gear ratios were not fixed as they are today right? I'd imagine if they allowed ratio changes in 2018 the current cars would be hitting ridiculous speeds at monza.

Top of eighth is set for Mexico, which is usually a bit faster than monza. They aren't on the fuel limit RPM at monza.

Blame it on the Assetto curbs Jimmer. Ascari didn't have the ridges behind the curb for the 2004 lap I don't think.

See if there's an option of adding 3-4 more Ferrari stickers on there. Get that extra 1 to 100 extra hp on there....

wow whoever did the gears for that preset you started using after 10:40 needs to refine it a bit. from 3rd to 4th it drops revs alot. From 4th to 5th not so much, then from 5th to 6th it's a massive drop again and then ofcourse 7th doesn't drop much at all as it should.
