Trying to Change Spark Plugs on a 2003 Ford Expedition (2nd Generation) Without Head Damage

This is Steven, and here is a look into my day to day life when I'm not keeping Artemis (Our 27 year old Winnebago) from falling to pieces. I want to make simple to understand direct to the point automotive repair videos of the vehicles I work on day to day. In this video I am attempting to change the Spark plugs on the infamous Ford Triton 5.4l V8 engine. If you aren't aware, the back 4 spark plugs can be a real PITA to get out without damaging the threads in the head. (Which results in severe engine repairs.) If you're having a hard time getting this done yourself. Or you just want a good tutorial on how to perform the task before you start the job. I think you will learn a lot from this and hope you appreciated the catortionism of working on old Ford Trucks..

I used whole can of seafoam on a quarter tank of gas. Ran it for about 30 miles and then sprayed each spark plug with carburetor cleaner to help loosen to avoid breaking spark plugs. Worked like a champ. I bought socket extentions from harbor freight and swivels. Taped with duct tape spark plug socket to avoid it staying stuck in cylinder head. Now I feel like I can fix anything. Next up rear main seal on 98 chevy cheyenne. God bless.

Completed this job on my 2001 expedition and now I was given a 2003 expedition that needs a complete tuneup as well. I feel yoir pain and i wish I didnt have to do this job again. I also had to install 2 CAL-VAN inserts on my 2001. I just hope I dont have to do that on this 2003. I wish Ford made the heads better on these 5.4L Triton engines. The amount of threads they put in the heads was just stupid. Keep up the great work

Always use Motorcraft sparkplugs in those 5.4's. That motor doesnt like any other brand. Great video

If theres alot of resistance tighten and loosen back and forth easily while spraying liquid wrench in the holes after blowing them out free of dirt of course

Hey bud what r the hoses or other things u have to remove or disconnect to have clearance to the back ones, I know the tri plate and reservoir next to it but other than that to reach back ones and other coils and plugs

Hope u blew all the debris from the deep spark plug holes before you removed them otherwise all that dirt fell into the cylinders when the plugs came out

It would have been helpful if you would List the size socket that you use to remove the spark plugs and shown what else you remove to be able to get the socket down in the engine ....

This was actually my first attempt at making a repair video. I never thought it would be as popular as its getting. If I get a chance to do another one ill keep your advice in mind.

And im putting die electric on spark plug thread is that ok? Instead of what u used? What else might i need i was gonna use can of compressed air to get dirt off inside plug wells is that ok, what might i need to do to get the plugs off easier so they dont break while unscrewing, last thing, any other liquids i need to put inside plug wells or anything? It's been awhile since I've had to tear one of these apart. Should be in the video everything I had to do to reach the back plugs. Dielectric grease is for the electrical connections not the spark plug threads. I would use a little in the coil boots before you put it back on the plug. Get a little anti-seize for the threads and bring a little patience and you should be good to go.

Too late put hopefully you put anti seize on the spark plugs before you inserted them. Make a lot easier removing next time
