I think mid-level hybrid Ferraris probably will fall in value lower than older pure ICE Ferraris. Once the seven year extended Ferrari warranty is over, there aren’t going to be many people wanting to take the risk with a £20k 296 battery. Buyers of out of warranty cars are going to much prefer F8, 488, Pistas, 458, than take the risk of a hybrid. Different market to £3m LaFerrari.

@Lamster66
@Lamster66 4 ай бұрын
@@BobbyDazzler888 Not just batteries there's all the electronics Assuming that they haven't deliberately put a time bomb in the firmware ( which a certain EV manufacturer might be doing) Modern electronics will not last decades like we used to see with old electronic equipment. The reason for this is that as everything has moved to SMT and low nano metre gapped microprocessors. The spacing between semi conductor material is smaller. It is impossible to get 100% clean on any electronic assembly and any contaminants will "grown" dendrites. Where as it might take 70 years for dendrites to short out a mechanical switch. the CPU in your ECU isn't going to survive that long under the bonnet in very hot and very cold and damp conditions anything over 10 years is borrowed time. Once you start talking about battery management and the high voltage circuits in EVs your not looking at an EV over 10 years old as a reliable . The other problem will be that when, not if the electronics fail the industry will have moved on and the parts fitted to your car will be obsolete so unless someone builds a custom solution there will be no fixing it. At least with an ICE someone could machine engine parts Or engineer some kind of conversion to use available parts

Re: the Panamera, do what GT3-owners used to do: take the ceramics off and store them. Install steel discs and then you reduce your bills and risks. But most of all: just don't buy anything made by VAG.

Do gt3 owners do this? Surely if one can afford a gt3 and buying a gt3 is for hard/track driving you want ceramics?
@pistonburner6448
@pistonburner6448 4 ай бұрын
@@Taylor40667 No, the opposite. They took off the ceramics. At least in the early generation 997 GT3s. The ceramics will still wear fast enough in track use to make their cost very high. And above all there is a huge risk of a stone hitting them and damaging them. Better to use steel discs for track use and just keep swapping them out when needed as they and the pads for them cost nothing compared to the ones with ceramics. Proper steel discs with track-suitable pads will stop the car perfectly well on track.

@@Taylor40667 They don't get rich by wasting money. Just coz they can doens't mean they will do it. Ceramics wear just as fast as steel brakes but you're looking at atleast $10-15k compared to 4-5k to replace rotors and pards allround. Keep in mind you can wear out brakes after a weekend of track driving.

Another paper for supercars used to be the Sunday Times car section. I remember during the height of the yuppie boom in the eighties, people were selling Testarossas for £250'000 when the list price was probably about £85'000. I remember when the first SL55 came out, new one's were being advertised for £150'000.

Sam & Toni you seem to forget that 296, sf90... are hybrids. I've driven both and they are AMAZING cars. But most people (me for example) don't trust them: hybrid, very complex cars technically, who would get one after the warranty expires... nobody. Also, every year there's a new hybrid coming out with better performance, autonomy, efficiency.. However, there will never be a new F12 TDF or 458. Naturally aspirated, V8 or V12.

Prior to Autotrader, I remember there was a shop in Hove called Contact-A-Car. It was set up like an estate agent but with photos of the (mostly private vendor) cars for sale in the window instead of houses. You turned up with your car, and the bloke popped out and took a photo of it outside on the street with a Polaroid camera. I used to have a look to see what was for sale most weekends.

So I listen to your podcast every week when I am out on my weekend ‘easy run’ as part of my half marathon training. I have heard countless times you and Tony talk about ‘Super SUV’s’ and asking what the point is. Allow me to explain - I am a petrolhead through and through, at 41yrs old I have bought and sold 60 plus cars of all shapes and sizes but then 2 years ago after a dream purchase (997.1 Carrera cab) took me to Le Mans and back - we dropped anchor! My daughter started competing on her horse! 😮 All of a sudden I needed something that could tow a horse box, negotiate muddy car parks so owned a string of double cab pickups. But then a 💡 moment - if I buy a 2015 (pre OPF) RRS SVR we can tow the horse box to the competition on the Sat and I can put it in hooligan mode and go out for a blat with the lads on the Sun. Otherwise I am looking at owning and maintaining something like a Gen 1 R8 manual for Sun drives and a Ranger for Sat horse duties. Not many people will say this but the SVR saves me money 🤷‍♂️ one lot of road talk (although hideous), one service a year, one parking space it literally couldn’t be better suited! There are probably others out there in a similar position but we are that small group that can make sense of the Super SUV. I hope to be getting into one at the back end of this year and plan to take it to Le Mans with me next year 💪🏻💪🏻 Keep up the incredible podcasts, you are a good combo of characters and help me while away the miles every weekend 👌

Super SUV's are just modern interpretation of status symbol. I don't think there is anything else in it. I originally thought they might be new version of super wagons, due to they "practicality" but I think they are way more of a status symbol than super wagons or sedans ever were... They are more like supercars for people who don't want to live with one..

“It’s a computer.” Tony said it, and that’s the reason all new-new cars will struggle on the used market. As someone who works on their own Ferrari, the only potential issues that scares me are the electronic ones, and that’s for a 430, which isn’t even 10% as complicated as these new cars, especially hybrids. In order for cars to become safe second hand purchases, repair-ability matters. Not reliability, REPAIR-ability. The enthusiasts buying these cars second hand understand they will come with maintenance needs and repairs, that’s not scary. Heck, some of us even like the projects! But if they’re projects no one can afford or easily perform (like hybrid or electronic repairs), then no, we will pass. An engine rebuild is less scary than chasing down hybrid issues. Old computers become bricks once they’re no longer supported. So turning these cars more and more into computers means it’ll be a brick later too. Even if that’s not entirely true, that’s how it will always be perceived. Because we all see cars from the 50s still running, but we don’t see people using the original Apple computer.

Things used to depreciate, and still should, cars used to be driven, now everyone thinks everything is a collectible and it's ridiculous and boring now. When I was in high school my girlfriend at the time, her mom had an F40 and she drove it everywhere, took it grocery shopping all the time, I am glad I got to experience cars like that when they were actually used. It was also nice when exotics were truly rare to see, it was special.

Interesting hearing about the dealer margin and buying and selling cars. I recently sold a car - I did the online we buy any car thing and they offered me 38,200. I tried carwow and got offered 39.000. Both of these offers were open to being lowered on viewing the car in person of course. I went to my local independent car dealer (with a similar size business to Tony, 20-50 cars on the lot and of similar price range). He examined every inch of the car and said "I can only offer you 46,000". I bit his hand off.

Picking Classics out of what are essentially expensive cars to begin with isn't really guessing as most will become classics anyway. Who'd have thought a Ferrari or a Porsche might become a classic one day? The cars that you don't expect to become classics are the ones that surprise everyone who ever owned one, sold it for peanuts, or scrapped it For example any M series BMW or RS Audi will become classic at some point, they are already quite rare because most people can't afford them to begin with. as they get older the not so good examples get bought up and thrashed around until something major goes wrong and then either get broken for spares or scrapped. The Good ones will never be affordable because nobody will sell a good low mileage car cheaply. Most will be retired to the Garage and Sunday driven in fine weather until they suddenly become very collectable. But who would have thought 40 years ago that an Austin Mini 1000 that were 2 a penny costing anything from £50-£200 would be a £15-20K classic, Or a Rot box like the XR3i a £20K classic (yeah the RS turbo and Sierra Cosworth were always going to be classics) Opel Manta, maybe thought that could be a classic at the time but Cortina mk3 couldn't see it. And then there's SAAB Aero models or even better Rare Viggen and Carllson models. 900s and 9000 Aeros and Carllsons will already cost you £5k for a shed and a good one closer to £10k A 93 Viggen will set you back anything from £7-12K depending on mileage and condition. I sold a NG SAAB 93 Aero 3 or 4 years ago for £800 I currently couldn't buy it back for £2.5K I still Have an OG SAAB 93 Hot Aero Coupe (Rare 3 door) as it is now it's worth £1,500-£2k It needs some work if it was tidied up its worth closer to £4K-£5K Although mine would cost you that much to get it in that condition. What makes anything (not just cars) become classic or collectable Is Familiarity and Nostalgia. With Cars that will tend to be a Sporty Variant of what was otherwise a popular but non descript mass produced car. Something like a VXR Vauxhall or any car in a special Sport model. Or at the other end something so bad that nobody would be seen dead in one think BMW Isseta fiat 500 the original one morris Minor Ford Consul, Capri . Basically if it survives and gets to 40 years old it'll become both classic and expensive no matter what it is.. And that's because as adults you will either remember your Parents, Grand Parents or the old boy down the road having one, or maybe if you're old enough you or your mates having one when you 1st passed your driving test. I used to Joke with one of my mates about the old bangers we drove around in our teens being future classics that our kids would buy. Basically If I still had every car I'd ever owned I could buy a large house on the proceeds of selling them as for my mate he'd be able to by a mansion and country estate as he only ever bought the top of the range sport models and has likely owned 100-150 cars. As for New electric and hybrid cars they won't become classics because the electronics in them will die or time bombs in the firmware will kill them. long before they get old enough to become collectible These cars other than prestige marques or sporty super cars will become disposable items that people lease rather than own. And when that happens unless your car runs on dead dinosaurs it won't be a classic.

I put on ceramic brakes because of all the mountains etc. The car, which I still have, has done over 100,000 miles, the discs remain perfect, I have yet to change the pads. The only problem I have had is a faulty transfer box which was replaced, free of all charges, after the three year guarantee expired because Porsche acknowledged that it was a weak point with the Macan. If you keep it two years and in the worst case scenario only lose £12,500 pa, I think you’ve had a result personally…….although for not much more, I probably would buy a Taycan !

No i don´t think the 296 is a future collectors car. Like most modern cars really. Cause it is full off tech that will be outdated very soon. And when Ferrari stops making them, how long will you be able to get parts? Like the batterypack, the touchscreens, the software updates and things like that. Once the touchscreens stop working or Ferrari stops the software updates they will be useless. And this is not just Ferrari but most cars these days. They might be collectable in 20 years for those that only want it to sit in a nice garage and never be used. But not for people that wants to drive it.

Collectable cars: they need to be a/ good cars, b/ low numbers - not GT3 low numbers (cos' there are loads of GT3s), but restricted "n x 100 built", c/ with a market of the right age customers. Without this, the cars will be just normal depreciating assets and as build numbers are no so high, that's pretty much all cars. The F1 & Carerra GT are great example, fits the bill for a, b and c above. Just like a 250GT0. I own a GT3, it's falling in value and will contionue to do so. Only very very special stuff is collectable as in investment.

cars like a 1970s aston v8 went from 30k to 130k in under 10 years .. the issue is that there are not the buyers for these cars at these prices.

Harry’s Garage bought the diesel purely on the basis of Land Rover’s latest deal. It’s 5.9% APR for the diesel and every other model is over 10% APR which makes them too expensive.

I would say it’s timing , 50’s and 60’s classics look to be stagnating and even falling in price while the 80 and 90’stuff is starting to boom . In essence you need to buy super cars which a wealthy middle age person lusted after as a teenager !

People don't understand the difference between real and nominal investment returns. By the time you factor in storage costs, maintenance, insurance and the illiquidity, cars as an investment are not comparable to financial markets. People forget about the previous classic car crashes.

Just my personal opinion but I’d never buy an SUV, I just don’t see the point in them. I like the look of some but always see the price and revert to an estate, just far better looking to me and better value. For the price of that SV you could buy a brand new M3 Touring and an almost new 911. Madness!

The worlds economies are suffering under the mountain of debt, which 'we' can not pay off. That realization seemingly hasn't sunk in yet, but when it does it will be exciting times to see what maintains it's value, the winners and looses. Will it be classic cars that suffer, fine art, house prices and real estate? The next 3 years are going to be interesting. The central banks created a problem they can't get out of, since we live in a debt based economy, they need to increase the debt to stay afloat which at the same time destroys the system through inflated prices. A classic 'doom loop'.

Thing is: it's all relative when it comes to collector car prices. The big boom came from Europe's car supply suddenly being wanted by hundreds of millions of people around new parts of the world which could start buying our cars. This includes the US, as even though they've always bought some European cars, they also had a boom of buying cars from Europe.

Wow! That ruinously-expensive-to-run VAG junk Panamera accelerates about as fast as a F20 BMW 140i xDrive! Oh, wait, you don't get the xDrive in the UK... Just think about it: the BMW 140i has about the same amount of space (4 people plus the same baggage), is pretty much exactly as good to drive (BMW more fun and dynamic, while the 2-ton Pig is more 'competent'), and only very slightly less quiet and comfortable...
