There’s a flashback to her calling the school herself effectively asking them if she can talk about her “success” to the students. But she tells her best friend that the school reached out to her and asked her to give the talk. So she’s lying, as it was all a ploy to go back and see the teacher.

Why did the writers give the 30-y-o protagonist an elderly name? Maggie is usually short for Margaret, which is by far the most common name of elderly women in the UK. However, it is unusual in middle-aged women & rare in young women.
