Sorry to hear about your bad luck, Evan. I've been involved with rearing cattle for over 50 years, and stll nothing hurts worse than losing an animal even when you have done your best to save them.

What a difference a few days make. You can tell how well these animals are cared for as we can see the concern in your eyes and hear it in your voice. Sometimes there is nothing you can do and letting them go is hard. You were there for her and they feel that love. Hard times brother. In our thoughts and prayers. Thanks for sharing even the bad news. It’s tough but shows we can do everything right and we are not in control.

So sorry about your sick heifer. We milked jerseys for many decades here, had two cases of listeriosis and I can tell you that your diagnosis is correct. As you have no doubt read, it is also called circling disease- the droopy ear is also a classic symptom. If I remember correctly it is a bacterial infection that enters the blood stream and affects the brain- usually from something they ate- and can get into their system from a small abrasion in their mouth. Our vets prescribed large doses of penicillin- and they were large- but both animals survived. I cannot believe you can't get a vet to come, that is bad. An animal can survive this if it gets medication in time- again I am so sorry. If I am correct, it is more apt to happen if the animal is eating fermented feed, which I don't think you guys are feeding- so it seems odd that she picked it up- you may not ever see it happen again- I hope not. If it does, you will definitely recognize the symptoms right away. Good luck.

I am praying for you all and your beloved cow, Lucy. I am glad you have eaach other to support and comfort in these stressful times. Do not worry about videotaping. It is a private time and even though we feel like we are family, we aren't and so better for you to take care of your family and not worry about us. Praying for you both and for Lucy. Farming is hard, but things like this make it harder. It goes from dead groundhogs to new baby lambs. It is a very hard job and y’all are doing great. We really enjoy your videos the joys and the not so good. You have our prayers through it all. 😔😔🙏🏻🙏🏻💕

So sorry to hear about the jersey cow. I hope things start to go better for your family. I’ve had weeks like that myself and sometimes it feels like it’s never going to end. I made the mistake of not covering our feed wagon once and all of the birds in the area were having a fest. Thanks for sharing.

I’m 100% sure that whatever you have done/doing for Lucy it is in her best interests and that you’re giving her the best care that she could get, unfortunately these sort of things happen with livestock and do test you to the very extreme but I’m also sure that we’re all wishing you both all the best and to keep a positive attitude and take care of each other as well as Lucy 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

When we first got into cattle an old farmer friend used to tell me "if you don't have them, they can't die on you" What he meant by that is that if you have animals long enough you are going to lose some. I know it hurts and you feel responsible, but as a fellow farmer it is part of the game. So sorry for your loss, don't beat yourself up, there is nothing you could have done different to change the end result. Just making her comfortable is a blessing.

The life of a farmer is one of great satisfaction and great disappointment. Lucy is one lucky cow to have you two caring for her. The pain in your eyes shows not only your sadness for Lucy, but your love for Rebecca who you know so loves those cows. Some people cannot understand the emotional attachment that farmers have for their livestock. But they become a part of your family. Praying for God's peace for you!

We have the same issues with veterinarians. Unfortunately, we consider ourselves lucky if we even get a return phone call from them. What a sucky week for you guys. Raising livestock allows us to experience all of it, the joys of the highs and the sorrows of the lows. We'll be praying for peace and comfort for y'all.

Why don't vets want to respond withvisits? is it distance,lack of large animal experience, more money in dealing with small animal such as dogs, cats etc.

I feel for you. Having sick livestock is like having sick children. You would do anything to get them better, but you don’t know what to do, or have done everything you can for them. Good luck with all of the issues, my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Taking care of animals can be at times difficult and heartbreaking. Trying to do the right thing for them can be difficult because they can’t tell you what is wrong. The fact of farm life is that sometimes despite your best effort you will lose an animal. I’m sorry you are going through this. I hope things go better for you in the next week.

The FDA says cows that have had many rounds of antibiotics can't be sold for meat, namely dairy cows.

Hi Evan, man I can hear it in your voice and feel it in my heart. Raising livestock can sure be tough on a guy. We have had a string of bad luck this winter as well. Many hard lessons. Wanted to let you know to keep your head up and I know that you guys are doing the best you can. We have had similar experiences with the vet as well. Unfortunately it seems like there is no one to reach out to when crisis strikes. Scouring the internet does not seem to turn up many helpful answers. Best of luck to you all. So sorry about Lucy. It's hard. We lost a baby goat a month ago and it tore my wife up. We took her to the vet on a Sunday night and she passed the next day. Sorry you have to go thru this. 😢

Sorry to hear that no Vets will come to your property. Over 25 years we had horses, sheep, pigs, bunnies and lots of cats and dogs. Our Vet clinic has several large animal Vets and we never had a problem getting someone to come to our property. If it was possible we would always load a horse up and take it to them since they are very busy.

Sorry to hear the bad news about Lucy. We're still digging out from a storm (2 weeks ago this Sunday) that brought us 100mph straight line winds. Whole trees uprooted, power poles snapped in half and power lines down all over town. We had the scenario you mentioned. No power for a week, no access to internet for 11 days, and overcast 80% of that time. So scenarios like you mentioned are not just imagined, they do happen.

Can also be a thiamine deficiency B1 (if the other animals appear fine, this could be it rather than sulfur toxicity)

Not related to Lucy, but when wind downs limbs in pasture assure none are cherry trees . These will kill in the wilted stage! Green ok, dry ok. I always cut and removed cherry trees if in pasture or on fence lines.
