you cant just control the fire it was just on and off, once the fire is lit you cant just turn it off.
you cant control the speed much it just has off slow and FAST,
but at least it has a sight glass...
oh and it has its own electronic sound of steam system that creats a ReALiSTiC experience.
just add concrete

Ok... at least LGB had the sense to work with a company that knows how to make live steam locomotives when they produced their live steam Frank S. Aristocraft obviously had no idea what they were doing with this thing.

I’ve always wondered why Aristo put in that ridiculous sound system. I did always want to smash it with a hammer just to stop that horrible whistle. But it was fun to run as long as you didn’t use the sound.

Yeah. My Aristocraft 0-4-0 live steam loco came of similar questionable quality. Before I even converted it to an 0-4-0 tank engine the @&$ plastic smoke stack caught on fire and burned bright before I could run across and put it out. I replaced it with copper pipe. Steam engines should not have plastic.

@@chasesrailwaylinesrr6447 The plastic here doesn't even save them anything, most live steamers just use the modeled boiler as the boiler. And they also added an admittedly decent (not good) but completely pointless sound unit to it. It's pretty obvious they didn't know what they wanted to do with this thing.

I once had an Aster 2 truck Shay. It had a copper pot boiler with wick fed alcohol burners. If it wasn't dripping fire on the track it was steaming poorly. Two happy days were when I bought it and when I sold it. This one is worse.

yeah aster products are known for having difficulty. I was looking at an aster Reno at one point, decided against making an offer when I watched the guy steam it up and left a trail of fire behind it as it took off, it had a fuel leak.

Haven't had too many issues with my LGB/Aster Frank S., but those had a lot of input from LGB to make them as user-friendly as possible, since the market demographic would be previous LGB customers that weren't used to live steam.

I've recently modded my Mikado to have a brass boiler barol instead of plastic and it SHINES. It works really well and the model is very good.

I know this is an older video. If you can buy one of the Aristocraft Mikados cheap it is a good project locomotives as the boiler and valve gear are sound. You could build a copper boiler jacket and metal cab.

I believe the chassis was made by aster which proves why it preformed so well

@@DeathValleyLumberCompany Probably designed by Aster and made in China. I knew Louis Polk. He used to belong to Tradewinds and Atlantic Railroad before he passed. They didn't make many live steamers. I asked him about it once.

Accucraft has luckily gotten MUCH better with their products. I bought the kit for the little 0-4-0, Ruby and it runs pretty well. Valve timing was (is) a bitch though...

@@steambom3350 I'm pretty sure some of the tooling for AML and Aristocraft is being used by Accucraft these days. AML I know for sure. I could swear I saw something about Aristocraft tooling on Accucraft's website or in a newsletter email, too. Maybe you're right, I can't recall. Either way I guess I assumed they took over the company rather than them having gone out of business.
