The Niles Canyon Railway acquired Southern Pacific 2-6-0 No. 1744 in early 2020. In this interview, we hear from three of the key players in that move, and talk about why this locomotive is a relevant piece for the NCRy as well as some of the challenges that lie ahead in its restoration process.

What happened to the Sierra 30? I thought they were still working on it, but there have been no updates since 2012.

Glad they got another SP Tender engine, Wish someone would restore that SP Atlantic down in LA. Shes the last of her type and it would be nice it if she was fit for service. I havent been to Niles in years and since I moved from California I cant really waltz on over. But I want to make a trip now to see that 2-6-0! But what happened to 2472? I never found out why its not at Niles anymore and why it hasnt run in a while. I know its not quite the best fit for Niles but I really would like 4460 to come back to the west coast. It should be at the CSRRM and not in the Midwest.

It’s owned by the GGRM a tenant of the PLA which moved out to another place.

2472 moved to Sonoma, Ca. Address any questions to them. Any future operations are subject to the SMART Rail Authority.

Out of curiosity, do you know if the NCRY has any plans for the SP 2467? Last I herd, it was at the CSRM on static display, Are there any plans to restore it?

I do not speak for the PLA but I can tell you they have no use for something that big in the canyon. Therefore, it makes sense not to restore it to operation.

@@Morgan_64 There is always hope, but unless someone who really really really wants to make it run again, has millions of extra dollars sitting around, and can get a lot of very qualified new highly dedicated volunteers who can work on steam locomotives to join very quickly, I certainly don't expect anything like that to happen. At least not in my lifetime.

I could very well be wrong, but weren't 2-6-0s, 4--4-0s, and 4-6-0s often used as dual-purpose locomotives on a lot of railroads?

I know 1744 was bought from heber, but were those steam switchers from heber too? They look like they were in some old heber creeper pictures.

I kind of wonder why they bought 1744 to restore it when I think they currently own 2467. If they own 2467 why not restore that to operation

1744 and 2467 are nothing like each other. It would make no sense whatsoever to restore 2467 for use in the canyon. 1744, on the other hand, is just right.

Does the Pacific Locomotive Association still own 2467

The Golden Gate Railroad Museum owns 2467. They completed their move to Schellville, Ca earlier this year. The GGRM their equipment to Niles after being evicted from hunters point in SF.
