Here's something you don't see every day...
For this SP 1744 update from Sacramento, we were invited to document the turning of one of the wheel sets off the Southern Pacific 2-6-0, No. 1744, that the Pacific Locomotive Association/Niles Canyon Railway acquired in 2020. To accomplish this task, the steam department at the NCRy had to have the axles transported to the Southern Pacific Shops in Sacramento. The SP shops are now part of the California State Railroad Museum, and are not open to the public.
Though the SP Shops are not open to the public, it is still a fully operational railroad shop. There are huge overhead cranes to lift massive equipment like steam locomotive wheel sets; and large machine tools, such as the massive lathe that accommodates the whole axle so that this important work can be completed.
This work is being done by Stathi Pappas, owner of Stockton Locomotive Works. Stathi is regarded by people in the industry as one of the best for this kind of work, and his company handles projects of any size, specializing in all the work that makes restoration of this magnitude possible.
In addition to turning the wheels, Stathi and his team are also shoring up the wheels that have developed cracks and other operational defects over the course of the locomotive's 120+ year life.
One important aspect of doing this kind of job fully and correctly while the locomotive is apart, is that it ensures a long service life for the future. Chances are that this procedure will not have to be done again for many decades to come.
