The Claremont Docks Railroad is Howard Lloyd's rendition of a 1940s railroad terminal in the New York Harbor area. This is a stunning HO Scale layout with a strong maritime element. The confluence of maritime and railroad modes of transportation are shown off in this one, and doing it in the broader context of the New York Harbor region in the 1940s really works.

This layout is incredible - I love how Howard worked in elements of his youth and his love of building boats and structures into the layout. Absolutely stunning work - especially on those boats and ships! Thank you for sharing with us!

Mr. Lloyd's model of the steamship SS MILEVA is an exquisitely detailed work of art, extremely accurate in every respect. During WWII, any vessel that floated was pressed into the war effort, not only for trans-Atlantic service, but also for coastwise transport. The MILEVA is a beauty to behold.

This layout is a treasure, both historically and as to the tremendous quality of the work. There's more to the hobby than operations! Mr. Lloyd is to be commended.

Truly one of the most interesting model railroad related video's I've seen yet. Howard seems like a nice guy and very interesting, I could listen to his stories for days. My grandfather introduced me to model railroading many years ago and would tell me stories about him and his dad working on the Reading RR. in particular the Reading Anthracite & Coal Company at Locust Summit near Locust Gap Pennsylvania, from 1945 when my grandfather exited the European theater to the early 1960's. Howard has similar stories to tell and is still around to tell them, I can't stress enough how important it is to pay attention and learn all you can. My grandfather passed in 2006 at the age of 85, he still had many stories to tell but I missed them, and will for the rest of my life. Much love and respect to you Howard, and you as well John, thank you so much for this rich knowledgeable video, you're greatly appreciated. - Dave B.

The last time I commented was 8 months ago and I was still planning freelance rail barge operations on my GCL south Texas coastal layout in the 1910-1935ish time era, now I’ve basically reconfigured to the point of near prototype design, but your layouts details and similarities between the both of us is perfect for learning and idea building as I continue to build my model empire thank you!

Amazing what the algorithms produce. I went to a small private boys boarding prep school from 1963 to 1968 called Claremont School just outside Hastings on the south coast of England. This is a fascinating little video to have stumbled across. I was in New York City in 1974 - not a lot different look and feel from this despite being a model of an earlier period. The docks and freighter remind me of sailing via Elder Dempster Line between Liverpool, Accra in Ghana, and Lagos in Nigeria in my earliest years till I just turned 6 in 1961. Years later, the charity I co-founded in East London oversaw a larger than life bronze sculpture of dock workers now standing outside ExCeL exhibition centre by Royal Victoria Dock in London Borough of Newham - it's very similar to some of your figures and images on internet.

There's a great deal of technical, detailed, engineering level thinking that went in to the layout with the whole emphasis being on everything else around the trains. I'm used to seeing layouts with the train being the primary focus. But with this it's the boats and buildings.

Very enjoyable Howard. Thanks! I build ships too. For my funnels I use EMT electrical conduit. I choose the diameter I need for a particular size vessel, cut the length I want, wrap a shop towel around it and then squeeze it into an oval shape in a table vise. I also use homasote fiber board to make my hulls, shaping them with a jigsaw. Then I wrap them with strips of roofing paper. I use track nails to both hold the roofing paper in place and simulate rivets. Mesh wire fences make good railings too. By using homasote boards I can have a good flat bottom base and stack them accordingly to create the effect of either a laden ship or one free of cargo.

If I can get half as good of layout as you've got here Howard I'll have something. Man what a nice set-up you have. I'm a big Baldwin VO-1000 or VO-660's fan myself. Right now I'm tinkering with some high-torque low rpm DC motors thats got the rare earth magnets in them with 5 & 6 pole skewed armatures to repower all my Baldwin diesels for ultra slow realistic speed movements. Great paint scheme on yours, love it bud.
