Wes....very good points. Many times it is difficult to match timber improvement with wildlife improvements. When writing a timber plan you must make sure wildlife is your FIRST priority, remember to include what you DESIRE. If it is timber valve over 50 years that is fine, but remember deer need cover and browse. Sometimes the best deer habitat has no timber value such as box elders etc. Remember they are an animal of the edge and need diversity, not just a woods of all mature oak. Bob

Yes sir I completely agree, very difficult to manage for timber and wildlife. I have seen exactly what you mentioned a farm most folks considered junk, because of the timber value or lack there of, be an amazing hunting farm! Thanks for watching and commenting

Good stuff. I’ve been taking out 24”dbh hackberry and they make a hole! lol. Ironwood, elm, maple, bent up cherry. I am releasing walnut as they are the retirement trees. I love the work and in this state-forestry stewardship has some property tax savings as well. Also a great time to get rid of bush honeysuckle!

I’ve got a video coming out on invasives this week, can be a huge problem with TSI. Great information about the tax savings, that’s awesome! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it

You said it right at 11:03. The timber is ready to be harvested. I would have a forester come mark the oak and walnut to be harvested so as not to high-grade the timber. It could be harvested a little heavier on that ridge which will open up the canopy, create intense browse while creating bedding cover. Now the only thing that concerns me is that you mentioned that there wasn't a lot of woody browse on the forest floor. That also tells me that there isn't a lot of oak regen either! And that is probably what the TSI was all about in getting rid of the excess "junk" trees in order to give the acorns room to sprout. And the last thing I would recommend is a prescribed burn, that would definitely help the whitetail come spring. Great video here! Very interesting and I'm glad you made this video👍!

Robert I’m glad you liked it! I appreciate you watching and commenting! I completely agree, it’s ripe for a timber harvest and I think would definitely help the farm!

Im gonna smoke so many Oaks off my property this year the acorn crowd would die 1000 deaths. The reality is, like that property where you filmed, I need cover and browse way more than i need 500 oak trees. I will leave a few pockets of oaks and a few of the giants but the reality is i have a forest of predominately oaks and way too open an understory. I was just gonna drop them but probably wouldnt be a bad idea to get some cash out of it. I think when it is all done i will take the leafblower to open the ground around my openings. Good info Wes.

Roy, Especially if they are white oak….they are bringing really good money now. Be nice to get some cash out of it along with better habitat. Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it!

Woods at 8:00 minutes, looks like was logged off even clear cut like 8 yrs ago. Yes there either shaded out or the trees are just to young to reproduce very young trees, I don't know if u pointed out but sometimes u can cut out what I call firewood trees, not lumber trees, especially if small areas.hope all like your channel.

I don’t believe this farm has been logged, current owners have owned the farm for several years and to my knowledge no timber harvest has been done. Thanks for the support! I really appreciate you watching and commenting.

What's the solution when the State Forestry guy comes to survey your property and tells you to wait another 20 ys before you should cut any of your trees? Are they even interested in TSI or FSI when they give their recommendations? Do I listen to THEM or to YOU?

Clark I have never seen your timber….and I’m not a forrester. But I would have to ask what is his goal, 20 years of not cutting anything sounds like managing for timber to me….which is perfectly fine if that is your goal.

@@DIYfoodplotpro I'm fairly sure the forester is all about timber management. In contrast our State Wildlife biologist which didn't seem like managing timber was their thing?? Thsnks for your perspective!!
