Gretzky was never drafted. He played in the WHA and when they folded he joined the NHL along with the Oilers.

This is my first-time re-visiting old #1 draft picks of the NHL and I feel they got fewer busts than the NBA produce lol. If they weren't HOFers some of them actually became solid hands but I guess its easier to become that with more roster spots in the NHL.

I didn't know a lot of these but I felt really smart when they were talking about Wayne Gretzky and Rob Ramage and I knew the only reason he was first was because Gretzky was never drafted.

Gretzky was actually not picked. he previously had a "contract" with the Oilers owner. the Oilers then made an agreement to keep Gretzky and pick last.

It’s very sad that Joe Murphy (1986) went from a Stanley cup champion to living on the streets with a drug addiction. Shows you how people are to risky with quick decisions. ( He suffered a brain injury and stopped playing)

Kevin Badger What I mean is completely based on this season. I don't mean that he's a bust and besides, didn't Joe Thornton actually have the worst rookie season of any player who was drafted first in the past 25 years or something? If you're gonna use the fact that he had a terrible ppg and somehow turn that fact into an opinion, your English is unreasonable and you've clearly not been to college with those analysis skills.

This was surprisingly difficult! Apparently I forgot Hischier and Ekblad existed 🙈 I'm surprised how many I know from before I got into hockey but I guess it's because it involves players I like LOL. I'm sad for the Blues though, I knew Toews was 3rd but ouch

Same! I completely forgot Hischier existed. Completely blanked out. I only remember Erik Johnson because Jordan Staal was the 2nd pick and Toews was the 3rd, so you just have to remember who goes before them.
