In this episode Shahriar reviews the Siglent SDM3055A (SDM3055) 5.5-Digit Multimeter. After a brief look at the instrument’s datasheet, a full teardown is presented. The instrument utilizes a two-board design and a large LCD screen. The SDM3055A provides a comprehensive set of measurements including capacitance as well as various graphing capabilities including histogram, trend and bar graphs. USB and LAN connections are standard and a USB-GPIB can also be purchased. The performance of the instrument is verified through experiments with various functions and setups.

I just wanted to say I picked one of these up and they have fixed quite a few of your complaints in the firmware! The speed like you’ve mentioned in the comments is a lot faster now and the power light is no longer used as a light house. Thanks for the awesome review as always!

Great video as usual...I actually find myself checking KZfaq every day hoping to find a new video...really love the repairs...you make them look easy which is a bit deceiving because when I get a broken device I go in to it thinking easy-peazy until I actually start probing around !! You are definitely good at your craft !

I had a piece of equipment that also had an "eye searing" LED and I thought about playing around with the current limiting of the LED but found a much more elegant solution - I put a small piece of good old masking tape behind the front panel and in front of the LED; the tape attenuated the brightness to a comfortable level and no circuit surgery was needed.

As usual, I enjoy watching your videos even though the material mostly go way over my head. Your method of explanation makes the watcher feel like he understands. Even though it is way below you, I would like to see you look at a diy oscilloscope that YJE produces. It is for beginners (DSO138) but it would be nice to see you review it ,explain the schematic they show, and take a look at things that the purchaser could do to it to make it work better and with less noise. Thanks again for your great videos. As I said most of it goes right over my head, but your explanation and your way of presenting the information is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

An interesting video as always, especially for those who can't afford Agilent/Keithley prices. It would be interesting to see a side by side comparison to the Rigol DM3058E which has a similar price point. Nice display but seemed rather slow in auto range mode.

I bought the unit from Amazon based on your review. I also tried to install the SW basically for capturing screens in my PC and I get the same error connecting via USB as well as Ethernet. My message read Failed to connect (not very useful). I have tried installing all sort of National Instruments SW to get this to work to no avail.

Did you try to stick the warranty void sticker back on? I have seen quite some of them lately that just wont stick anymore after dried out for a few minutes in air. Regarding the little board with the MOV, I see lots of those for cost saving purposes. All units of a manufacturer have the same boards, and there is a couple of them for various countries filtering regulations, and you stick in the cheapest you can get away with.

I love new gear on my bench, but I don't see anything in this review that would make me abandon my ~15 y/o HP 34401A in favor of this Siglent. Yes, it measures capacitance, but I would use an LCR meter for that measurement anyway, which also does inductance. Measurement speed is too slow. The PC remote measurement software is hilariously bad, and sadly typical of many Chinese products. They rush to market without proper development and debugging, and customers are forced to act as an arm of their R&D department instead of buying an instrument that enhances productivity. In a global marketplace like we see today, there's really no excuse for software and user manuals as bad as the Chinese put out when there are plenty of talented coders and tech writers in the world who would respond to the right financial incentives. [/soapbox] Anyway, thanks for another complete and informative review, Shahriar!

This design is very interesting. They put a BeagleBone Black to their own design and added some on-board flash to it (you probably messed up FLASH and RAM chips, but don't care). Are they using a linux system in the background, or why do they keep it in standby instead of switching it off?

Shahriar, when you stress tested the cables at 5000V, maybe you should have turned the lights out to really check the dielectric breakdown, a blue spark or aura may have been witnessed. Sorry, didn't need to tell you that did I. lol Would have looked good for the video too. Like your Cat by the way, what tyoe is it? Persian?

1. More cats. CHECK 2. More frequent videos, CHECK 3. It takes it's time to update? Little bit slow? Man, that's slooooow :) I understand that having Keithley meters spoils, but man, that's too slow. Even in fast mode it's still very slow, so seems limitation is from GUI refresh on LCD. 4. Would be cool to have just few words and closeup of used ADC and voltage reference used in meter. That will tell us more about stability/long-term performance, than most of specs in datasheet :) 5. Bar-graph display seems broken, starts from screen edge, not scale edge ^_^. Also in ohms bar-graph is starting not at zero, allowing negative resistance? :) One of things you could improve for future - to shot some hi-res photos of reviewed gear and internals and upload some pic hosting, or in your website article. Sometimes having such photos is priceless for repairs / hacks ;)

I don't think this is worth half a Truevolt, personally. If the budget is that tight I'd still just get an older brand name meter and replicate the graphics functions in software on the PC. Those Chinese firms are snapping at the heels of the big boys, no doubt about it. But in offering more features they had to increase their price from like 1/10th of a top brand to more like 1/2. I don't think you get enough quality for that kind of money. Good review though, at least now I know I have no interest in this product, thanks!

This meter is a direct knockoff of the Agilent 34461A Multimeter. Watch David Jones video EEVblog #489 for a direct comparison. The reviews are basically the same just the bloody accents are different. They just basically copied this meter button for button screen for screen. I don't think that Agilent would rebrand their meter for Siglent, or would they? I would like to say great review, but it just disturbed me what some manufactures would do to make a buck.
