This list was based on maximum recorded size instead of average size which is why the White-Tailed deer is on this list and the mule deer isn't. Mule deer are larger than white tailed deer on average but the white-tailed deer has a larger recorded maximum size. Hope this comment clears things up :)

I came across an elk in Washington state and it was 6’ at the shoulder. I slowly backed away from it and I think it knew that I was no threat so it just continued walking in the direction that it had been walking. It was so majestic!! It’s a memory that I will treasure!

In fact, the Irish elk was only the same size as moose today! (Granted, only the very biggest moose). The true biggest deer ever was a moose ancestor, and even then it’s not a huge size difference.

The Irish elk is not actually an elk. It’s closest living relative today is the fallow deer in Europe. The antlers are large and have the same shape. Irish elk is actually not just found in Ireland, but throughout the northern Eurasian hemisphere

To put into perspective regarding elk, Rocky Mountain elk (a subspecies) were found to produce a bugle that can reach 90 decibels at 5 meters away! Why are they so loud? It's to advertise their fitness to cow elk and to show off to other bulls. An alternate name, wapiti (“white deer” in Shawnee), comes from the light-coloured coat of the bull elk. And you definitely don't want to mess with moose! When a moose delivers a hard, fast kick with its hind leg, you can hear the tendons and ligaments pop and snap when the hoof comes back at the end of the kick. They can kick straight ahead and will also rear up and stomp. Where bears and wolves want to eat you and your babies, kicking and stomping can be a formidable defense. As for white-tailed deer subspecies, one with a neat story is the Avery Island deer, named after Avery Island in Louisiana, where Tabasco sauce is made. They're found in southern Texas as well, but were first described on Avery Island, which isn't an island but rather a salt dome. Tabasco was founded by Edmund McIlhenny, but the subspecies was discovered with the help of Edward McIlhenny. Edward was a naturalist who saved snowy egrets from extinction by bringing many to Avery Island. He formed a wildlife refuge in the area, and when he sent deer specimens to the state museum of natural history, it was there that they realized it was a subspecies that was undescribed. And thus, the museum named it in honor of Edward: mcilhennyi

Those trophy specimens that were estimated live weights of white tailed deer are far away outliers of the norm, so I get where you’re coming from, but 99% of the time if you see a mule deer and white tailed deer in the same area(white-tailed deer now exist where formerly it was only mule deer in the western U.S) it’s always pretty obvious mule deer are larger, so I can’t say I agree with the point, but I get it. I almost got trampled by a bull, cow, and calf moose that came running out of the willows without warning a couple weeks ago. They were just a l few feet away, my heart was definitely pounding.

I think you will find that in North America the Mule Deer is larger than the White Tail though they are related. They are also the more prized trophy species, alas for them. They occur from east of the Cascades into the Great Basin and the Rocky Mountains. They are more of a shrub steppe species than a forest species.

I wonder did the Irish elk resemble today's moose? They looked to have similar antlers.
@Svensk7119
@Svensk7119 7 ай бұрын
The Irish Elk were much larger, as were the giant moose. Also, they are reconstructed to have more of a typical deer nose, less droop. The giant moose is usually reconstructed as just a bigger moose.

The Irish elk resembled the fallow deer in Europe. They had large antlers and the same shape as the fallow deers antlers

I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about wildlife, but I hadn't heard of some of these deer. We have called 'moose' elk, for a lot longer than we've called them moose, so I prefer to use elk. I also thought that the other elk was the same as a red deer - wrong again! Thank you for these great videos and their solid information. 😊

@@swedishmom My boyfriend’s family lived in the suburbs of Stockholm, but we also went to their summer home which was on an island in a lake, well south and inland from Stockholm. On the drive back to Stockholm, we visited the “Troll Forest” where there were huge boulders strewn about, and trees, ferns, mosses, and lichens everywhere! It felt magical there. My Mom hit an elk with her car once. Luckily she swerved in time and the elk struck the passenger side. There was no major damage to the car, just dents. While the elk though, sat on the side of the road for a few minutes and then trotted of into the woods.

Yeah… bison are in the same family as what you call a buffalo, not the same genus, but bovidae is the family, which means they are in fact, fairly closely related. I don’t know why people get so worked up over common names anyways, if you care that much, stick to the Latin names.
