Two dramatic years in the history of the TT. Mike Hailwood was awesome in 1961 and even formidable riders such as Rhodesian Gary Hocking on his MV Agusta couldn't defeat the Oxford rider, who crowned his week with a 100mph average speed for the Senior race.

The 1960s was a fascinating era where bike racing was concerned 👍

You're right there, lot of innovation going on between two-stroke and multi cylinder four-strokes. I remember bike racing not being televised very much... even the TT. Bike racing was a minority sport as far as TV was concerned..Ahhh! the smell of R and all the different engine music...great days indeed.

*I well remember the Race of the Year at Mallory Park September 1964, still treasure the Program, and long after the race had finished and the crowds had gone and living locally, asking a Marshall if I could drive my car (Citroen DS19) around the circuit, he said better ask 'Mike' (Hailwood) and directed me to him. I asked Mike, who I had briefly met a number of times before, and he said of course you can, and told the Marshall to let me through the top gate (Near Hairpin) - He said come back after we are having a bit of a Party with Chris Barber later. Did two/three laps and then went back. Mike appeared genuinely pleased to see me again and asked how I got on. Had a good laugh together as we found had a lot of common interests (3 years older than me and born on the same date 2nd April) and had been to the Belgian Grand Prix the previous year in my Morris Minor 1000. Stayed until late with many of the riders and "Chris Barber & his Jazzmen" playing. Imagine that today, the pits were open and you didn't need a fancy pass to get in.*

Thank you very much for your sincere words to remind us of a beautiful moment that explains well what Mike the Bike was like (car of course) and what the racing world was like until the years after Villeneuve. Thank you very much for the beautiful memory of the greatest motorbike champion of all time.

One of the great privileges of my life is that I have met Hailwood, Taveri, & Redman, & was proud to do so. All great men in their own right, however, for me, SMB was the governor, & will forever occupy that place in my heart

I wonder what time you'd expect from these bikes with modern tires
@boss302gorie8
@boss302gorie8 7 жыл бұрын
probably not much more. sticking tyres would show the deficiencies in the chassis and suspension,its a good thought though
@redtobertshateshandles
@redtobertshateshandles 4 жыл бұрын
@@boss302gorie8 they had basic suspension yes, but if the damping is correct then it is more than enough for featherweight bikes. People put shit on old suspension but it didn't have stiction problems. Chassis, again, sufficient for the power, weight etc. Ever heard of a featherbed chassis??? A great basis for a bike even today.
