Another very low budget, very bright aperture Chinese manual focus lens. Some are better than others, and they can certainly be useful - let's see how this one fares.

Great review! One of the great things about the TTArtisans line (and some of the other cheap Chinese manufacturers) is that they give a viable alternative to entry-level hobbyists, which in and of itself helps keep other lens companies from jacking up their prices too high as they have to compete.

I have it. Use it on my old Xpro1. It's very good from 5.6 to F8. Not so good as the TTArtisans 35 F1.4 (a very similar lens). For the money you can't beat it. On my old Xtrans sensor it renders full of character photographs. And as the old sensor yields very warm images, its blue cast goes unnoticed. Recommended.

I had this lens for a couple of months and as general use landscape lens it does the job. But! I didn’t buy this for f5.6 and at f1.4 all attempts to shoot people, portraiture or just album shots from walks- it renders ugly, bokeh is just … mehhh, and overall is just somehow… ughhh. Similar to their 35/2 (had one as well on a7ll) - bit sharp, not the worst but it’s like your daughter’s first boyfriend- he might be decent lad but you just don’t like him. Same here, for the money there’s nothing to complain but I had worse lenses comparing performance which returned better pictures

After Christopher Frosts review I bought one of these lenses in MFT fitting thus giving me a 34mm semi wide angle. Not everyone is a professional photographer and needs top of the line optics and in my case it just filled a gap in my lineup of prime's. I think it's an adequate lens optically and my philosophy is that if the subject is good then the viewer won't pixel peep. It's a lens that is enjoyable to use and easy to get along with and to my mind the colour rendition is very good.

Yours is the most thorough review I've seen yet on this lens. You really revealed it's weaknesses in a very specific way. Still, it's a very inexpensive lens. I always appreciate your reviews.
@Cagey7531
@Cagey7531 3 жыл бұрын
That's debatable, other reviews go for the more real world usage over test charts, the weaknesses here will only really matter to extreme pixel peepers. Not many are looking for sharp corners wide open outside of astro - and if that's your thing you're surely looking at higher end options. For what it is, a cheap and cheerful WA option to have some fun with, I wouldn't take these test chart results too seriously.

When shooting wide open I want the corners blurry anyway. Such as when shooting a person in the middle of the frame. When I don’t I am always stopping down for deeper depth of field. So this works just fine for me. Oh and I will be shooting on MFT if I do buy it. Thanks for the review.

Comparing the TT A 17 to my old 1930's vintage 28mm f/6.3 Leitz Hector (on a full frame Leica) puts them quite close, except the Hector cost a lot more originally (even by 1930's prices) and is woefully slower. LOL. I'd say the 17/1.4 is a darn good bargain these days... and yes, I still use my beautiful old 28 Hector on my M Type 262 Leica. Thank you for your excellent review.

I have both the 16mm f/1.4 and f/2.8 Fujifilm XF lenses, but really miss the ability to zone focus via the DOF Mark's on the lens. While I can sort of do this by using the scale in the finder with the XF lenses, the focus by wire is not stable while moving about on the street, and the focus will drift from the initial set up. So question, are the DOF Mark's accurate on this lens? I love doing street shooting at f/8 with a zone set so that I can shoot quickly, knowing that my subject in that near-to-far zone is covered. Additionally, is there a hard stop at infinity, that actually fall at infinity? Thanks for this review.

I am interested in a bright compact lens mainly for street photography and I am undecided between the two TTartisan lenses 23mm 1,4 (plus compactness) and the 17mm (plus focal but less compact) what do you recommend? The one thing that puts me off these cheap manual lenses is bokeh quality. It's so inconsistent at best and then completely unusable and filled with aberration when dark or flaring when bright that I can't justify them. It depends on if you need a zoom or not. The Sigma 16mm is going to be the best, no contest. But if you need a zoom then the 18-135 and 10-18 are both good.
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 3 жыл бұрын
Are you asking me to go back through all my reviews, spend an hour or two watching them all, and give you a 1-10 rating on each of those lenses? That's not going to happen. The sharpest is the Sigma 16mm lens and the Samyang 12mm lens (unless you mean the Sony 16-55 f/2.8 G lens which will be the sharpest). The others all have their strengths and weaknesses - just watch the reviews and you'll see how sharp they are
@firefly5717
@firefly5717 3 жыл бұрын
I would go for the samyang 12mm because of its wider field of view and the bright aperture. If you choose the manual version, you will be forced to handle a wide lens fully manual. For beginnings it's pretty heavy but brings the most of fun. The money you are saving with this combination you could use to buy your second lens later.
@InterMaus
@InterMaus 3 жыл бұрын
If you watched the videos, why would a numbered list help you. You would be deflecting the decision to someone else. You act like sharpness is all there is to a lens. It's not. First of all, the Sony 16-55 is a expensive f/2.8 fast zoom costs as much as the body you mentioned, the 16-50 is the kit lens, which isn't all that great. Second, you list lenses that do different things, you list a 16mm fast prime with a superzoom along with a fixed and variable aperture. If it's a problem deciding, don't decide on sharpness, decide on what you want to use the lens for, and how much you want to pay for it. Expensive lenses are not great first lenses if you're not sure what you need them for.
