I just ruined my own childhood, so now you all have to suffer as well. I loved Robotech, especially The Invid, but Palladium's Robotech RPGs never really fulfilled the desire to play in that world.

"See... I can get you what you want, I can. I can get you anything, you just have to talk to me, you have to trust me. You can trust me, 'cause I'm your priest, I'm your shrink... I am your main connection to the switchboard of the soul. I'm the magic man... Santa Claus of the subconscious. You say it, you think it, you can have it."

A gamer I knew back in the day said that the Invid Invasion was the only campaign anybody ever played in the Robotech series because the bike mecha allowed you to go anywhere (towns, shops, taverns) whereas you couldn't go anywhere with veritechs except space. However, the GM I had knew how to utilize the Macross campaign. Much of the social obstacles and interactions took place on the bases. It was a lot like playing the early Wing Commander videogames except it was table top.

I love all Palladium games, and Robotech was one of the games we played at our TTRPG weekend hangovers in high school! Same with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

Sometimes the memory of what we thought we saw/read/experienced is more valuable than the actual truth of the experience. Like places I went as a kid that made a big impression on me... and I'm tempted to return, but expectations vs. probably reality keeps me away.

Only got to play this once although it might have been Battletech as it was a long time ago and my memory isn't what it once was

Palladium book have been the main set of game for my old group for decades. Asked Kevin as a convention about Robotech and they had to come up with a lot of stuff because their was a fair number of notes missing. so they had to create it themselves. In one case they had to buy a high end VCR and pause the tapes at certain points to count the missiles being fired to figure out how many missiles each mecha carried. But if your looking for the best examples of Lore from their first run at the game, some of the secondary splat books would be what your looking for.

I remember playing this game in the early 90s with a friend of a friend. It was very hard to understand, but it did introduce me to the term MEGADAMAGE! To my 14 year old mind it was awesome and made me want to play it.

'Disappointing' = Palladium in a nutshell. XD The Spartan was converted to BT under the name Longbow, the Monster wasn't (altough BT's Omega is kind of a nod to it).

closest to monster would be Clans-made Behemoth/Stone Rhino

I collected all of these back in the day. It's a super involved game system with all the fun stuff like drug addiction, among other mechanics. Great fun! The lore stuff was in the novels & comic books of the era. I don't know if any of that made it to the UK.

Speaking in Palladiums defense, at the time they were written Robotech was in syndication (and re-aired on SciFi when it went live in 1991 so Palladium kept page count low to save money (plus they had to pay for the license). I disagree some that palladium is unsuited for the setting - its proto-storyteller vibe and high numbers/SDC carry the vibe of the over the top combat. This was a cartoon with city sized ships (with the SDFs 1 and 3 transforming) and the Macross Missle Massacre meme. Where I dump on Palladium is they should have reissued the books by consolidating all the thin supplements (REF Manual, Deck Plans 1-3, etc) and adding context pages. Instead they squatted on the IP for over a decade, not even taking advantage of the Shadow Chronicles (which had big stars in it) to reissue...only eventually partnering with a scummy company to make a horrible tactics game that lacked playable rules, minis, etc. That they lost the license is a blessing for fans but too little too late

Southern Cross is pulled from Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross. An Anime from the 80s that was part of a "Trilogy" (none of the Anime were related, sound familiar?) along with Super Dimension Fortress Macross and Super Dimension Century Orguss.

Watched the series and played and ran Robotech and I have to agree. Palladium's Robotech didn't have the look and feel of the Robotech series. It was very disappointing. But as you say, it's a palladium game.

Robotech was never part of my childhood but Captain Pugwash certainly was. The outro animation shows that you have at least a passing familiarity with it and your interest in pirates is well attested, albeit perhaps focused on areas that were not explored in the cartoon. Is it too much to hope that you might endeavour to acquire the licence, should it be available?

3 average for style, based on what scale? I love(d) Perez's art.
@PostmortemVideo
@PostmortemVideo 6 ай бұрын
Style isn't just art, it's the presentation of the text (the writing style) and layout as well. Yes, the line art is fantastic, but that's not enough to lift the game as a whole above 3. Scale is 1-5, 3 is average.

I’ve heard of other rpg channels refusing to cover Palladium products … why might that be?

I don't know. Could be related to unfulfilled crowdfunding, or that they've gypped quite a lot of freelancers over the years.

This game was such a disappointment (like most Palladium games imo). I remember it taking my brother and I almost two hours to fight two battle pods. He had an Excalibur, I had a super veritech fighter. We moved on to Battletech shortly after.
