A lot of the time I use Teknoaxe music, so it's easier to put the attribution here all the time! teknoaxe.com/Home.php - Sometimes I use White Bat Audio as well.
If it's not Teknoaxe, it's probably Bass Rebels, here on KZfaq.

"See... I can get you what you want, I can. I can get you anything, you just have to talk to me, you have to trust me. You can trust me, 'cause I'm your priest, I'm your shrink... I am your main connection to the switchboard of the soul. I'm the magic man... Santa Claus of the subconscious. You say it, you think it, you can have it."

Even when I don't find a game personally appealing, I do enjoy all the ideas and inspiration I get from most rulebooks. These days, tho, we are blessed and cursed with an overabundance of choice, and there's just not enough time. I appreciate these reviews, because I can't possibly keep up on my own.

I believe it's called Break!! because of the "Level Break" thing in anime, when a character who has been beaten to the edge of death suddenly powers up to a level they've never reached before and trounces the enemy handily. It's a big thing in anime, though it does leave some US audiences scratching their heads and wondering, "Where the hell did *that* come from?!?" ;D

The Japanese OG is Sword World, and the Goblin Slayer ttrpg is an adaptation of the most recent edition, I think. I own it, but since I don't have a group lined up and I would likely GM in any case, I suppose I will run a few sessions of solo play with it to kick the tires. (After I finish folding and combining Scarlet Heroes and Worlds Without Number so I can run my duet player in a more conventional setting, and after I get my solo sci-fi play sorted out, but before I start writing my "traveling between worlds" megadungeon setting.)

There is talk going around this comparison that even if goblin slayer is inspired by sword world, they are quite incompatible as systems.

I watched Full Dive and it's pretty good actually and doesn't really give away much. Same with his other work, "The Hero is overpowered but Overly Cautious". I'd recommend giving the first episode a shot in both cases. (unless you do dub over sub then I don't know). The scene near the end of the first episode hooked me in for the entirety of Full Dive.

Honestly I love the eccentricity of the game. I am interested in futzing around with Break!! and mining the setting if nothing else. I would definitely pick a set of themes and tropes, cut off the irrelevant character races and world features. I would cut out unneeded classes and rename them as necessary. Grey Wizard is, I believe, the sole artist and they absolutely killed it. They have this Studio Ghibli meets Record of the Lodoss War visual style in the book, and I actually like it a lot. True, the layout is definitely a weakness, but dang, overall this is pretty amazing for a labor of love. Fun fact, there are three dice on the lower outside corner of each page. The purpose is to pick a color and flip to a random page as a dice simulator. That's not as weird when you think of "the cut numbers into squares and pull them out of a hat" random number generators from the early days of roleplaying. I honestly don't know if this game is any good, but it does have a certain plucky charm.

The Japanese aesthetic is always askew from the Anglo-sphere. I don't watch anime, read manga, or play JRPGs but was stationed in Japan for 18 months in '89-'90 and I was always interested in how some aspect of Western culture was adopted by the JNs a (Japanese National) and had to go through a three day cultural awareness training to be able to stand shore patrol when in Yokosuka. I'm unsure what you mean by a "procedural rpg" but the term makes sense in regards to their culture. Everything has a proper procedure in Japan, from buying sushi at the kaiten, hailing a taxi and getting into it, to protesting nuclear weapons and the presence of the US Navy on Japanese soil. Everything has a proper procedure and it seems to make them happy to have them. Perhaps they are Autistic as a people? What are the minimum requirements from a printed, physical book, POV that you are looking for in a quality product? You mentioned binding, paper weight and feel, and of course the fancy ribbon.

As to why light novel / manga titles are long, the manga/LN over in Japan is really, really competative. Like, hundreds of different books coming out a day levels of competative. So, as an aspiring manga artist/LN writer; you better put your synopsis on your title in order to catch the eye of the overwhelmed readers. Also, the Japanese titles are much more compact than the English ones

It might not been officially translated, so as to be able to review a physical product in English, yet, but as far as "anime inspired from" ttrpgs go, might I interest you in sword world?

@@PostmortemVideo indeed, it might have enough in common to not really need a seperate review. Even so, given the fan translations are still going on, and that recently the core of its first edition got translated, you might want to take a look into it, from a design and curiosity perspective, not necessarily for a video purpose.

I quite like the art and layouts in this. Reminds me of the stills and design refs you'd see in Newtype magazine. Would love to play something like this but I'm pretty much the only weeb in my circle of friends. :) Could never really get into video game JRPGs due to the "grinding" aspect. Is the OG BESM still worth playing in 2024?

Consensus(outside of Grim's valid criticisms) is the 2nd Edition Revised for most content and most polished version of BESM. You can kick it around for a session or two. That said, you should ask yourself what you're trying to do genre-wise. If you want powered fighting shonen? Prowlers and Paragons will do it. If you want adventure then check the themes and save yourself trouble by looking at a specific system for your type. Like Mecha more than mech pilots but still want drama? Lancer. Want One Piece style? You need ship combat that doesn't suck, which means your guess is as good as mine.

Heading towards 8k subs my dude.........do you review .pdfs? I know that the lack of tactile feedback and the necessity for a screen might be stumbling blocks but as you know, a lot of products never get to print. Break isn't the sort of product I would normally consider but my goodness, the art, layout and graphical style appeal.......even if it's perhaps a trifle too spacious.

kinda strange but BX with a anime skin would be the closest for me to the modern fantasy anime feel. Of course not that strange considering a lot of that vibe comes from record of lodoss war.
@lordilluminati5836
@lordilluminati5836 28 күн бұрын
Lodoss is not modern anime. Modern anime has it's own feel and tropes very different from vintage. Personally I think I like vintage anime more overall but modern anime likes to be flashier and have complex magic and power systems along less realistic and more detailed character and clothing designs.

@@lordilluminati5836 of course that a different vibe then what I am talking about, dungeon mushi, Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, goblin slayer , and mushoku tensai are closer to the vibe I am talking about. I would not use BX for suicide squad isekai or My Instant Death Ability Is So Overpowered, No One In This Other World Stands A Chance Against Me! I would use godbound for that lol.

There's this weird thing when westerners, especially those of a 'certain type' (*cough*) try to make something anime-like in visual it always come out looking wrong and fake and I don't know wtf is wrong, given even AI can do shit that looks the part. Its like there's a certain mental block or brain worm or confluence of influences that tend toward making things weirdly pastel-ey and cutesy and often a bit too round. Not sure how to explain it, does anyone else see it? Even the lamest, most generical Light Novel-adapted anime stuff or even AI stuff looks more convincing and true than this stuff.
