Decorticate posturing: The arms flex inward, with the hands and fingers flexing down. This type of posturing tends to happen with injuries affecting the cerebral cortex (outer part of the brain) or cervical spine injuries.
Decerebrate posturing: The arms extend outward and the hands point down. The legs also straighten and the toes point. This type of posturing is associated with injuries to the brainstem, specifically the midbrain or pons regions.
The different types of posturing can provide clues about the location of the brain injury based on which areas are affected. Understanding these posturing patterns is useful, especially for someone analyzing concussion videos.
