Having easy access always makes these jobs faster. At least you didn't need to cut open a wall or a ceiling. Good fix Steve.

What is not apparent to some commenters is the stop uses its outside diameter to close the tub drain and the overflow drains through the inside diameter of the stop. This makes the overflow a fail safe configuration.

Mine was stuck just like this one. If you don't want to go through a wall and if you have some large pliers you can grasp the top skinny metal rod as far down the tube as possible. Hold tight and put your foot by the drain for leverage and try to pull straight up. Took a lot of force but this worked for me. Now to get it to stop the drain again... Looks like I'll need to buy some lube.

Sometimes just tapping on the pipe will loosen it. My husband tapped on the pipe and I was able to pull it right out without taking the pipe apart. Great video and thanks so much!

@@jomangeee9180 good point lol! I ended up lunch a hole in the drywall. I put heat to it with a heat gun until I smelled floor boards burning. Let me tell you how massive the plug was! At least 5x the weight of a replacement one today. Apparently brass metallurgy has progressed a lot since the home was built. It took vise gripes and a big @$$ wrench to unscrew and pull out the old plug. I had two steel s hook and a chain to it before taking the pipe off

This is helpful, but I used CLR down the hole where the plug goes. I waited about 5min, tired it- no luck. Poured a little more down and waited about 10min. Came back. Hit the rod with hammer (using a screw driver to aim the energy. Sure enough, it loosened up and came out. Keep in mind, that prior to this I was trying for a while to get this loose. Anyway, before you pull off the back panel or pull out the wrenches, try CLR.

Ugh. MY problem is the pipe behind the plate, which screws into the gasket and pipe … is not connected to the drain pipe anymore… And some previous owner painted over the cover that gives access to the pipes behind the tub, and … ugh. What a pain, huh? 😅

Exactly my problem. Got to put a towel in the tub. That banging would drive me crazy. Unfortunately for for me I have to cut the sheet rock behind the tub drain. Install access panel to finish to make repair but still that plug came out easy from rear access. Did you apply CLR or lubricant? My drain is stuck open. Making it operational to shower. Great video

Steve, I've got a weird situation that I can't figure out. Same problem in the video where the plunger is stuck, pipe layout inside the wall looks exactly the same, but if I pour water through the overflow where the lever switch comes out of the tub, the water just drains out normally as if a plunger isn't even there. I thought maybe I had one of those spring loaded drain plugs, but if I pour anything into the actual tub drain, it will actually fill the horizontal pipe going from the drain to where I assume the plunger is stuck, before it starts backing up into the tub...so it has to be a plunger type, correct? If it's the plunger style, I don't understand how the overflow can drain freely.

What was your fix vs buy-new decision? A new one is under twenty beans. Homeowner budget? Condition of the existing? People around here always seem to buy new where you tend to fix old.
@buckyswider1
@buckyswider1 3 жыл бұрын
I actually think the problem is more in the bottom pipe where the plug slides into- that gets corroded on the inside. That's a much more complicated repair than replacing the overflow tube and stopper.

In my tub, the drain was cleaned out recently but water won't drain out of the tub. I removed the cylinder and the rest of the drain linkage assembly, but water still sits in the tub. With the cylinder sitting on the table, shouldn't water drain? What else can I do?

I'm having the same problem, only it's stuck in a partially closed position, and my water is taking forever to drain. Once I get it out, can't I leave it out? Is it just used for filling up the tub with water? Can't we just use a rubber drain plug on a chain, instead?
