You certainly have caught something exceptional there, Pierre! I do not know of any other band in the last 75 years that has attempted to learn and play this piece! It's a great example of the work Tuba Skinny do in un-earthing lost treasures. It seems that Bunk Johnson, reminiscing about the early days, played it on the piano in 1943, claiming that he had composed it with Tony Jackson in about 1900. Tuba Skinny (I'm guessing) must somehow have got hold of the Bunk Johnson piano recording and learned it from that.

I remember Chris Tyle's Silver Leaf Band playing it here in New Orleans 20 to 30 years ago. I heard Twerk Thomson's Doro Wat Jazz Band playing it at 3 Muses on Frenchmen Street earlier this week.

I note it's on Tyles 1993 CD "The Smiler", and also on Steve Pistorius's 2014 CD "New Orleans Shuffle". (Pistorius played piano on the '93 Silver Leaf cd.) Both CDs have been played on the trad jazz show on radio WWOZ New Orleans in recent years.

Glad to hear that! Thanks, Carlos. You are absolutely right. It probably came to Tuba Skinny directly or indirectly from Chris Tyle, who is another great reviver of lost treasures. I have found the Tyle CD deep in my collection. In the the liner note, Chris Tyle says: 'On one of Bill Russell's AMERICAN MUSIC recordings, Bunk tells the story about Tony Jackson composing 'Baby, I'd Love to Steal You' in the back room of Dago Tony's club in Storyville. On the recording, Bunk plays the tune on the piano, from which I arranged our version because Jackson never published the tune'. Chris Tyle plays it in Eb, as do Tuba Skinny.

This is beyond wonderful, Pierre. The natural habitat for TS is Royal Street, with all the chaos and distractions that go with busking. How brilliant it is to see and hear the band filmed and recorded so well. The simplicity of the setting lets us enjoy things like Shaye's astonishing musicianship all the better. Thank you.

Don’t know the background of the song but I know one thing-THIS GROUPis great. I actually listen to them so much I can’t get some things done. There is so much talent in each one in the group. They are amazing.

Pierre - You have indeed caught Tuba Skinny on a particularly splendid occasion. Thank you. I have enjoyed the several of their 'standards' as well as new tunes, as Pops notes. Is there any chance you could make a playlist in the sequence of the whole set ? It would deepen the sense of "being there". Thanks again for fine work; these will be played many times.
