Throughout the entirety of NFL history, the wide receiver position has always been the greatest crowd catcher in the game of American Football. But have you ever wondered how the wide receiver position in football has evolved through the years? Well, hopefully, you have because in this video I am going to be breaking down to you the complete history of the wide receiver position in the NFL. Nowadays we see NFL players like Ja'marr Chase and Justin Jefferson continue to push the evolution of the wide receiver forward. But before them, there were cornerstones of the wide receiver position such as Calvin Johnson, Jerry Rice, and Randy Moss among others. So I made this NFL history documentary on the evolution of the NFL and the reasons the wide receiver position looks like it does today.

I wanna see one evolution video on Offensive Lineman because it’s pretty wild. The 1962 Packers are considered one of the GOAT teams and this is their starting o lineman. 6’4’ 250 Forrest Gregg 6’3’ 245 Jerry Kramer 6’1’ 232 Jim Ringo 6’3’ 249 Bob Skoronski 6’1’ 247 Fuzzy Thurston Derrick Henry, a RB, is as big as these dudes and probably much more athletic. Some QBs like Josh Allen and Justin Herbert are bigger than these guys. Nowadays offensive lineman are well over 300 lbs and it’s been like that since probably the late 1980s.

Derek Henry would have run for 2000 miles a year against 60s linemen and line backers. The defensive backs would get out run.

Bob Hayes should be in this, for being the king of speed (others had been quick, but Hayes forced the invention of Zone coverage). Also a note about contact rules, many 60s and 70s receivers look kind of bulky now (Max McGee looks like a tight end, Warfield was rather big). But they had to fight off unlimited bumping (and run block). This is the hidden reason Alworth (and Rice for most of his career) played flanker, harder to jam them. Hidden effect #2, Having Fears and Hirsch starting made it hard to find snaps for another potential star, so Dick Lane got moved to Cornerback (and set the interception record his rookie year).

You missed BIG on the 2010's. The evolution of the slot receiver. Slot receivers have undergone a complete Renaissance over the last decade. But otherwise it was a fun watch! You put out good content.

He ran far faster than it appeared he was running too which was kinda wild the one time I got to see it in person. It answered the question I had about why I saw so many bad angles from defenders. Tyreek hill looks like he is running fast which is why he's cheetah but Moss was smooth like a gazelle with almost a cheetah top speed. If you were even with moss at 5 yds that hand went up because you were beat.

From what I've heard, what separated Jerry Rice from everybody else: his level of work ethic. He was better that everyone else and he was absolutely committed to spending the entire year making sure he stayed that way. He also had his act together. Contrast him to most of the top WRs from the 21st century. Guys like Moss and Owens might have had more talent than Rice, but they were their own worst enemies. But yeah he was in the perfect storm: his talent, playing in pass-happy offensive schemes, great QBs, and incredible health. Not only did he play 20 years, he had one season where he missed most of the year with a knee injury but otherwise never missed a single game due to injury.

Nicely done. I'm thinking of a similar deep dive on the evolution of receivers and dbs pre and post defenseless receiver rules... For instance, you never hear the phrase, "this guy can work the middle of the field"...cuz everyone can, defenses can't just take guys heads off to discourage sending faster, more talented receivers over the middle anymore. Wr rooms used to have a couple slow guys who could work the middle and not die just so offenses could utilize that part of the field at all. Basically the evolution of the receiver and the rules governing the passing game have led to the extinction of slow "over the middle recevers" as well as hatcet men more commonly referred to as "box safeties" in polite company lol.

It's my belief that modern rules have produced a less violent but still very physical and much more elegant and refined game. A game I find even more entertaining than watching jack Tatum keep the sabbath holy by legally committing attempted murder every sunday lol Anyway, keep up the good work!

Not to be a contrarian to you timeline but I encourage you to look at Bob Hayes. The 1964 Gold Medalist and Dallas Cowboy redefined the position in the NFL while Lance Alworth was scorching defenses in the AFL. One of the most lasting effects of his presence was placing the fastest athletes on the OPPOSITE side of the ball in order to defend against the “world’s fastest man”. His lifetime 7000+ yards 70+ TDs is a testament to how much of an impact he had. Jimmy Johnson, the 49ers HOF corner back, actually played offense for SF in the early 60s and was, like Hayes, a fellow Olympian.

You forgot another great QB/ receiver(s) duo which epitomised the very offensive system created by a coach that would not only change the very manner in which offences play today, but cause the very way defence in the NFL is played and the size of line backers and line men are today vs. 40 yrs, even 30 yrs ago. Don Coryell's "Air Coryell" that was lead on the field by Dan Fouts throwing to receivers Charlie Joiner, Wes Chandler and Kellen Winslow, not to forget the incredible catches of John Jefferson early in Coryell's term as head coach (78-81 when Jefferson was traded to Green Bay amid a contract impass). I know there are loads of great receiving examples and limited time length of your video, but I just feel that any one of the 4 receivers I mentioned is a mistake to leave out if your purpose is to explain the receiver position and it's evolution.

No love for Steve Largent? I get it: in the 80s, Rice was the man. Head and shoulders over everyone else. But Largent was a phenomenal receiver in his own right. And he didn't have the benefit of playing with 2 HOF QBs

Probably already said but: It is pronounced "Core" not "Corpse". The term Corps is French, which is why is is pronounced differently than it is spelled (blame Napoleon). Althought Corpse and Corps are related, as "Corps" does mean "body", but corpse implies a dead body. And the USMC is anything but a dead body.
