@@TucsonArizona It is interesting how the frequency and severity of tornadoes declines quickly as you move west from the Texas-New Mexico line. My understanding is that while tornadoes in Arizona are actually unusual, those that do form tend to be quite a bit weaker than the ones in Texas and further east.

So wildfires (rare), haboobs (dust storms), monsoons (water storms, rain, flooding), and heat waves. That's pretty much it for Tucson. Thanks for the video!

Great video! Thanks for reminding people that even though we don't see many of the disasters that other parts of the country experience, we do have serious flooding every year, and washes are very dangerous to cross when there is water running. I do recall one incident, about 1989 or 1990 when I was caught in a tornado or extreme microburst on Oldfather Rd on the NW side. As I was driving south toward Ina Rd it tore a roof off a house on my left, knocked down a fence and shattered the glass on the side of my SUV. I never saw it coming. I was uninjured but had car damage. These storms do strike fast here.

When I lived in Picture Rocks our new neighbors decided to try and skirt the 18" elevation requirements for a mobile home by digging a large hole and placing their brand new double wide on it. Right next to a wash no less. Like 2 years later we got the heaviest monsoon I'd seen. The water was to my knees coming off sombrero peak and flowing directly into their front door that opened to ground level.

A few years ago, when I was driving for totalride/discount cab I was driving to pick someone up but first I needed a rest room since they lived off Camino de LA Terra/ highway dr. I was going to stop at the park on the north side of the wash but too many cars were coming from the other direction for a left turn so I decided to go to the park on the other side. I was just out of the wash when suddenly I heard a thundering sound and turned to see the wash completely flooded and the road nowhere in sight. It was terrifying. If I had driven any slower.......

I grew up on the East side: Bel Aire Ranch. The back of our house faced the Catalinas, and included a large, covered patio. During a monsoon storm, I went to our closed French glass doors to look out. My mother said, “get away from those doors”! I was an obedient child, and as I took a step back, the copper door handles turned blue and there was a loud crash of thunder. In the house across the street, the dog sleeping by the picture window was electrocuted.

Back in the late 1700's an earthquake struck south of the Border in Sonora and it was a big enough quake to rattle Tucson. But very few people were living here. No, Tucson is not exempt from experiencing a quake.

@@clifffowler1289 there's more hispanics in Phoenix than Tucson from what I've seen. As far as drug issues go, if you go looking for something you'll find it, no matter where you live. Most people do drugs, but just because they're doing the legal ones they claim they're not drugs.
@clifffowler1289
@clifffowler1289 Жыл бұрын
@@GLRYB2GD Absolutely fair assessment and opinion . I was just curious if some how being so close to one of the major pipelines of the drug issue really showed a drastic difference. But let’s face it, our own government had a LARGE hand to play in the “crack/cocaine epidemic” of the 80’s.

During the few fires we’ve had on our mountains, I didn’t really notice the smoke smell. Interestingly, I noticed more of a smell/bad coloration in the sky when an area around Phoenix had a fire. I guess it just depends on the direction the wind is blowing?

It should be noted that drought is not necessarily brought about by Global Warming. In the warmest period of the Holocene, so far, the Holocene Climatic Optimum, many places were far less dry than they are now. For example, the Sahara Desert was green, the Gobi Desert was forested, and northern Mexico was notably more wet. On the other hand, in the early days of the period known as "The Little Ice Age" the desert southwest got much drier. The Anasazi people with a robust, flourishing civilizaiton until then, had to move. Nobody can say absolutely for sure, but it seems likely that the drought brought on by the cooling climate was at least partially and likely mostly responsible. So don't assume that it will be dryer in the future because of Global Warming. It is possible as the warmth affects long term weather patterns, but it may easily be more likely that it will increase rainfall.
