The Everglades challenge is a 300-mile unsupported, expedition style race for kayaks, canoes, and small boats. You must propel your craft by either man power or wind, and you must be able to push your boat off the beach yourself, all of these things making it one of the most difficult small boat races in the country. The Tallulah canoe seemed like a perfect fit and we wanted to see if we were up to the challenge. Come with us as we try to avoid pythons, gators, dead fish, and a big black wall of doom!!
Thank you so much to Keen for sponsoring this video and making incredible footwear perfect for our lifestyle. Oh yes! They are a really fantastic team. In my teens I started windsurfing on Lake Ontario and eventually both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and the Caribbean. In my 30s switched to kitesurfing which took me to The Columbia River gorge, Thailand, South Africa, Australia. A back injury lead me into learning to scuba doing my PADI open water in Fiji and then Samoa and Hawaii. Now in my 60s I kayak fish 5 or 6 days a week. Life sure is sweet!!

When storytelling is at its best, everything but the story is forgotten. You tell such great stories and are able to convey the hard work, difficult processes, frustration, uncertainty, and weariness which make the accomplishments, triumphs, joys, and growing resilience so satisfying and meaningful. There is a life truth in that for us all. Not all of us are called to the life you live but we do well to live as you live. Work hard. Work together. Dream Big. Bite big and chew fast! Celebrate! Sail on!!

As a fellow watertriber for many years, ( I’m now too old). Watching the performance of your boat, I’m very impressed. None of the stock Tandem Islands I owned could have kept up with you. Your video is one of the best I have seen about the EC, well done. However you were very lucky in Florida bay, ( the worst part of the trip for most). I always hated that area. We live in Sarasota, and I still like to go for the EC launch and see the couple hundred boats entered every year, and talk to old friends. Just a really nice video. Congrats

As a Sarasota native this is fun to watch. The red tide is a bummer, it's been really bad some years and very little others. I never heard of that race and I love the idea. Sailing isn't a skill of mine but I could learn. Your little boat rig is pretty cool for the bay and intercoastal waterway. Camping on the islands is fun, my brother and I used to take his canoe out to the ones behind Siesta Key or the ones behind South Lido beach. There are lots of rats and some rattlesnakes out there, so we took BB guns. I'd love to go down there and take a boat down to the Glades from Sarasota, if the red tide isn't bad the fishin' is incredible most of the way. Racing would be fun too. Thanks for showing this adventure.

Have been following you guys for awhile -- always great / educational / informative / entertaining videos! As to this boat and its construction: I had the good fortune a couple years ago to tour a shop that makes racing (rowing) shells. They're all carbon fiber these days (compared to spruce back when I rowed). The hulls are 60' long and 18" wide and weigh just over 100 lbs or so without rigging. Your construction videos brought back some good memories of that tour. There are so many similarities to the rowing shell process -- including the vacuum bagging! Super cool stuff. Keep on being amazing! 😃👍
