A simple chore day turns into an anchor recovery mission ... and then we sail away again to a new island and on the way Billy gives you the scoop on how we decided which Doyle sails we outfitted the boat with and why. Thank you Doyle Qingdao for doing such an incredible job making our sail quiver! bit.ly/DoyleSailsQingdao

The big Deme vessel is, as you know, busy working on an offshore windfarm. Those rusty pipes (outher diameter between 8 and over 10 meters) 1300/2000 tons each) are the monopiles. Single pile basis that get hammered (or vibrated) into the seabed. Those yellow things are the transition pieces those are put on the monopile after installation. The tower with the generator and blades will follow in a later stage. That massive green construction on the side of the vessel is called a pilegripper. And on this vessel it is combined also an upending bucket. Meaning that the big crane will lift the big pile horizontally and put the end into the "bucket"of the pile gripper. Now the crane (5000 tons capacity) will lift only one end of the pile while the other end id kept by the bucket. this way the pile will not slip overboard uncontrolled when going to vertical. once vertical the pile gripper will loosen the grip to let the pile slide through until it stands on the seabed. Now the crane will detach and pick up a massive vibro hammer and put it on top of the pile. the pile will be driven to the right depth while the pile gripper makes sure the pile stays perfectly vertical. During this operation the vessel will be kept in place by dp (dynamic positioning). This means that the ship will stay stationary guided by gps and helped by thrusters that will make sure there is just very little movement. While the pile gripper is also equiped with motion compensation it can calcel out the remaining movement of the vessel to make sure the pile will not move other than vertical down while hammering or vibrating.

Was the wreck on the charts? If not, did you inform the harbormaster and send a note to Navionics of the wreck's approx location? Might prevent another sailor having the same problem, or begin the removal process of the wreck by Nantucket. Nantucket - the wharf area was completely run down by the late 1950's/early 60's. The owner of S&H Green Stamps (stamps used to be a big thing at grocery stores, you filled in a small book with stamps and could redeem at S&H store for limited selection of household items), bought the Wharf, repaired it and that's why it is in good shape and has shops on it today. Nice summary on sails.

I hope Seawind has sorted out the self tacking jib. I chartered a 1000XL, which is the little sister to your boat, and it would not slide over properly. Perhaps it was just old (It looked in good shape) but we had to push it over by hand every tack. Way to win the race against a much bigger boat! North Sails USED to make sails from Spectra / Dyneema called Sharkskin.. that held their shape perfectly and are ridiculously durable.. which is exactly WHY they stopped making them.. they were far too durable I have one - my main sail and .. its perfect and its far from new and everyone keeps asking me if I got a new sail - yes its that good... There is apparently one other sailmaker who builds sails from spectra fibre - and I would look for one of these if I were buying another sail...

Cool to see the sail inventory you guys have on the boat. We have the same sails but just ordered a winged spinnaker from Precision Sails (like a parasailor) because the asym just doesn’t offer enough deep downwind performance. Something to consider if you plan on the Pacific crossing. 😜
@Tulasendlesssummer
@Tulasendlesssummer 10 ай бұрын
I could definitely see that being valuable for long deep downwind sailing. Would you still have your main up with that sail in say 12-15 knots deep downwind?
@HarborsUnknown
@HarborsUnknown 10 ай бұрын
Probably not needed, but not sure yet. As you know there are a couple of schools of thought on the main up with spinnaker. On one hand the main sail stiffens the mast and brings a uniform tension through the sail to the sheets and the transom alleviating the forward pull on top of mast by the spinnaker. On the other hand it canvases the spinnaker increasing the potential luffing when accelerating down waves. Also we are not in love with a full main downwind for long passages, as the wind increases in a blow, rounding in the wind to drop the main becomes hair raising. In short we are not sure yet, may be keep a deeply reefed main to stiffen the mast a bit and keep the topping lift taught. Sorry if I was a bit scholastic in the answer and stated what is probably obvious to both of you 😊
