Very comprehensive and well demonstrated information. The videos you guys put together are so helpful and inspirational. It so helps me, being new to gardening, when you show menial, probably common sense actions, such as administering fertilizer, proper watering, deadheading and the like so that I know what I'm doing is correct or not. Thanks, Laura & Aaron (sp - I apologize if I am misspelling either name)

Thank you so much Laura for posting this video. My mother and I were just discussing this the other day. I just did that to half my gladiolas! But then I read that it's better to leave the foliage, so I have half and half. Do your moms friends tulips come back every year without a problem? I know gladiolas and tulips aren't the same but I'm just curious.

the right time to prune them,is early spring, usually in march/april, before they start sprouting.. I prune mine right after blooming, and then again in the spring, then the rosebushes grows compact and dence, and flowers wonderfull every year :) . Note that some say you can prune roses in the winter, but my experience is that this gives my roses frost damage on the stalks, and its not always pretty,.

@ThorKipperberg
@ThorKipperberg 7 жыл бұрын
thats always a good idea, and yes bulbs tends to sink deeper in to the ground , and sometimes they go so deep that they wont be able to come up to the ground,. dig them up after they have stopped flovering and the leaves have died back, seperate smaller bulbs and store them in a dry cool place until the fall, september to december and give the bulbs space to grow,. and you will have a good flovering of your bulbs in years to come. If you look at how they grow bulbs in netherlands , this is how they do it, and it works pretty well Ill say ;)

I planted mine last year, I didn't water my container (24" round, 20" deep), since late october until early March (but I did allowed some snow to cover it like 5 times and melt), my neighbors whose tulips are in ground are covered by snow all winter. My winter temperature is 30F. Now, I know the deeper your container is, the best chances they get of coming back year after year. I shall see that next year.

@Jack-oc2xq

Laura Barham yes, both are basically the same in terms of caring, deadhead but leave the foliage to photosynthesize and store up lots of energy to produce next year's blooms
@ThorKipperberg
@ThorKipperberg 7 жыл бұрын
yes :) dig them up, devide the new bulbs from the mother bulbs, and give them a cold dry storage either in the refriderator in a paper bag/box etc, or in a cold room that has tempertures around 4-10 C, then when the fall comes, give them a new wide space to grow in,. there is many tricks to get daffodils to grow and reflower, and in many cases they needs to be devided and planted other places, as they produce a lot of new bulbs that takes out energy and space for the original bulbs you planted to flower,. so dig them up and see what you find ,.

When they yellow and die back, dig them up. Twist of the baby bulbs and roots to get the most out of the big ones next season. Keep them in a box with some straw or sawdust in your garage or shed. In the fall, before the ground freezes you plant them as you would nee bulbs. The baby bulbs will likely not flower but you can still plant them, they will get bigger and flower the year after

@ThorKipperberg

right after they have dried out the leaves,. then you can dig them out, and store the bulbs in a dry and cool place,. until fall, seperate the smallerbulbs from the mother bulb or they will take energy from the motherbulb, and you wont get as good flowering from these. The smallerbulbs you can plant out with the other bulbs in september-october,or until the frost wont let you dig in the ground anymore. I plant bulbs until mid december as long as its not frost,. you can also fertilize the soil in the area you plant your bulbs , either mix in slowrelease fertilizer or use a cowcompost soil mix , and work it in the soil where you plant, this helps the bulbs to really get more energy as they once start to grow roots and in the spring they have more food to grow in,.

I have these questions: 1. My city (Monterrey, Mexico) is very hot in the summer, about 35-40 Celsius degrees (even more sometimes). 40°C=104 °F. Is there a problem if I wanted to keep them as perennials instead of anuals? 2. If I wanted to keep them through the years, I do not even touch them after the flower dies, isn't it? Do I just keep it there? Or do I have to do something else? 3. As I said, my zone is too hot, right now we are about 65 degrees in the afternoon. If I started planting bulbs in this week, will they be blooming by the end of December? I hope you can help me, thank you!

Hey Laura, this is a bit of an unrelated question, but I was wondering if you had any experience with flowering climbing plants? I'm looking to plant something in front of a fence that will eventually cover most or all of it on its own. I live in a zone 8 and would love something that looks nice all year, with some color during the Spring/Summer. Do you know of any good climbing plants that would work? I'm only really used to working with indoor plants so far but I'm trying to broaden my horizons, so hopefully this isn't a silly question. Thank you in advance and keep up the great work, I love your videos! :)

there is quite a few plants that might work for you,. what about clematis, they come in a variety of colors, calystegia pleno, is another climbing vine that has beautiful filled pink flowers that climbs, Silver Lace Vine, is another, what it lacks in color it takes back with white clusters of flovers, another i can come up with is lonicera vines(honeysuckles), beautiful,flovers in pink, orange, yellow,white or red,and they smell wonderfull too. another great vine is wisterias, but they need a little care and pruning,and in most cases its a work in progress to get them mature enough to flower as the one you get from the stores are small in size and they are not really the fastest growers,. another vines that could work for you is Kiwi vines, yes the store bought fruit one, they grov tremendously fast, have great foliage and tasty fruits as a bonus ;),then you have vines with just foliage, like english ivys, and Virginia Creepers, humulus vines, and passiflora vines if you have them in containers and take them inside for the winter,.

Can you tell me why you have to dig up tulip bulbs and store them to plant in the Fall? It seems mine never want to return each year. I have some planted in ground and in pots. Both ways they seem to turn to mush if left to winter over. I love tulips too and I see where you plant hundreds. You don't dig all of these up each year, do you? I remember somewhere hearing that there are some tulip species that re-bloom each year thinking these must be the ones you don"t have to dig up? Do you know why you have to do this, is it because it has something to do where the bulbs originated from? Boy, I hope some one is working on having bulbs you don't have to dig up.

I hear you shouldn't plant over tulips. Are they letting the tulips bloom then digging them? Then putting the bulbs back in the fall? I dont want great tulips in spring then bare beds all summer. I only have so much space.

Do you continue watering the plant once it's through blooming?

Alex41 they won't require as much water but yes, it is best to water them and keep the foliage alive for as long as possible to store as much energy in the bulb as they can

I have tulips in containers and have removed them after the foliage died off and am storing them in my cool basement. Can I replant them in my flower bed in the fall or a container, I am in zone 6.

yes. but they will need a cold spell,. so a trip in the refridgerator or cold storage room wont hurt,. (4-10 Celcius) for a coupple of months, this helps the bulbs to go dormant, othervice they will just dry out,. its also very smart to rinse of soil and devide of new bulbs that have formed, before storage :)

Tulip is my favorite flower. I planted some bulbs during winter time but unfortunately, where I live is too warm for them to grow. So, they died☹😢😭

Brenda Melendez u can actually keep the bulbs in the refrigerator after planting in the pot for atleast 3mnths. take it out in the beginning of spring.

Sima Rajbanshi did you mean before planting?
@weirdangel4025

no dear. they say tulips needs a 'chill period' which means it needs to feel really really cold (not freezing) temp during winters to be Abel to grow it's roots . so at the end of autumn u can plant it in a appropriate container. follow all the common bulb plant instructions and pop it into refrigerator after winter passes and spring comes bring it out keep in a South facing window for a week then u can place it outside.

Sima Rajbanshi thank you, not many people have room in their refrigerator for pots though 😊
