Like quite a few people mentioned we don't have many good serious horror movies, this is definitely one of the best ones we ever made. And the fable sort of a creation makes it even better To give some more insights, in case you missed out, in the beginning itself the story is laid out in detail, but we only understand the relevance of the first few dialogues slowly as the movie progresses 1) The God Hastar was greedy for gold and took all of it. When he was about to take the grain his siblings demolished him into many pieces, then the Goddess hid him in her womb. That's why he and all the treasure he accumulated is in the womb 2) Because he couldn't get to the grain, he is always hungry for it and is also scared of it. That's why he can't get into that circle made of grain 3) There are many pieces of him, that's why many Hastars or pieces of Hastar come out in the end when the grain dolls were multiple 4) His curse is to live forever, but hungry. And that's the curse anyone he touches gets. They live forever, but always hungry. Which is why the father says only people who know the truth know that living an immortal life only sleeping and eating isn't a boon, but a curse 5) The grandmother was the one who used to do this, and got touched by Hastar, hence her curse. She was kept alive through generations because only she knows the way to get to the treasure

This movie showcases old days of India. The name of place shown here is tumbad where it rains most of the times throughout the year according to the movie. They say it rains because the gods are upset and angry that the ancestors of the mansion in Tumbad made a shrine of Hastar. They just did that to wake up Hastar. They also mentioned that he took all the gold/wealth from the goddess but couldn't take the grain/food. That old man is a higher cast person whose family live liked kings in a mansion. The old man is the only one remaining in the mansion with just one wife who needs to live like a slave according to the tradition that's why she cannot even grow her hair. The old lady who sound like a monster is the great grand mother of that old man and she has been cursed to live forever she is immortal but she barely is in the condition she only sleeps and eats. The wife of the old man needs to take care of that monstrous old lady. That old lady said something like "I don't want the treasure anymore just let me die" that meant she tried to get the treasure but got cursed in someway, how? That you will find out. The mother of two kids just want to be get some money as she is promised by her husband/old man/sarkar that he will give her gold coin but she has to earn it. The mansion has a treasure of gold coins the ancestors of the old man managed to get one gold coin and kept it in the shrine with Hastar. The treasure is not easy to find. The elder child is already greedy as you can see how he asked her mother about the coin. When greedy he doesn't think about anything else like he sent his little brother to feed the old hag. He is just selfish maybe it's in his genes. The old man died and his wife she is not allowed to even go at that place where he is being burnt(there can be a better word for this) that's way she is just watching from across the river.

As my grandmother used to tell me, greed is the biggest curse, hunger for anything more than what u need is a curse and u must avoid it.

There's a nice little detail that you missed at the end. When the son didn't accept the gold, the rain stopped indicating that the curse has been removed and that the gods have forgiven the family.

Main lesson the movie wants to highlight is greed leads to your downfall, at the end the boy understands it hence he doesn't take the coins from his zombie father.

In indian culture (i.e hinduism), there are hundreds of stories teaching us things we must hav to deal with and conquer as goals of life, LUST, ANGER, GREED, JEALOUSY, ATTACHMENT, AVERSION.

Actually in Standard Horror Movie in all over world, the Biggest Punishment which Ghost give is nothing but death. But here this Movie totally makes a Paradox. Here in this Movie the Biggest Punishment which a Ghost give is a Immortality. People didn't understand that Immortal as per Indic Subconsciousness isn't a Boon but it's a Biggest Punishment which is worse than Death. Where you never die. All your Parents, your Loved one, you children, your Grandchildren will left you, but you will be still remain here forever, you own Body will become your biggest enemy.

A true cinematic masterpiece

Tummbad is a real place and it is said to be cursed and hence it rains non stop every day there (it hasn't stopped raining there since decades but other than that all was fiction)

Just want you to know that kgf and bahubali are not good films. They are just unnecessarily hyped up cause bollywood (hindi language films) are getting hate for no reason. Hence regional movies like kgf and bahubali are hyped up despite being utter trash. To watch good movies I would suggest hindi films like "3 Idiots", "Shershaah", "Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ramleela", "Dil Dhadakne Do", "Padmaavat" etc.. Just try watching any of these films and you'll figure out for yourself about this unnecessary hype for regional language stuff. Tumbbad was a bollywood/hindi film fyi

Ok so first of all, "Hastar will come for you", NO, he won't the father made sure that he made all the HAstar's come out and eventually die along with him. Secondly ofcourse the kid won't take the lioncloth, that is literally the message of the movie, the cycle of greed, as to how it will always keep increaing. Hastar here represents greed, when he divides into multiple forms, we see that greed is something that never stops growing. There is nothing like good amount or bad amount of greed. So in the end the father is smiling while being burnt because he knows that his kid has finally learnt the lesson which he himself was unable to learn, "To let go of greed finally". The kid understands that greed will take you nowhere and hence refuses to take the bag at the end of the movie. Also if you notice, it stops raining in Tumbbad at the end of the movie which refers to the fact that the Gods are no more angry since the cycle of greed has finally been broken. Everything is just mythology these creators made up just for the film. And the film budget around just 5 crore rupees which is 600k dollars. Impressive right.

Tumbbad has layers that run deeper than the womb of the goddess... (Read further to get your minds blown)... 1. Hastar has gold and stays inside earth because gold lies deep in the earth. But grains and crops grow above the soil. Hastar is forbidden to touch food as food can be shared among people and satisfy people's needs. But gold creates something more than a need. It creates greed! Hastar was so greedy that it had a choice to jump towards grains first. But he went for gold... *He chose his own curse* ... Just like in Harry Potter books, Voldemort chose his own death by attacking baby Harry first (instead of Neville Longbottom) 2. Risk is always required along with greed. Sarkar, the old man who fathered Vinayak wasn't courageous. But Vinayak (during his boyhood and when grown up) seeks monster Grandma's secret about the treasure. His brave nature eventually convinces her. She detects his inherently greedy nature, thus tells him about the secret in return for mukti (liberation to end this curse through fire). Remember she never tells that secret to her own son Sarkar because probably Sarkar was timid. 3. Indian independence is not merely a narrative device it is a metaphor of young India (pandurang) achieving freedom from age old Colonial greed (represented through ancestral curse of greediness that runs in the family line -- Grandma, Vinayak and Pandurang). 4. Grandma tries to eat boy Vinayak in the hut, but because she cannot touch grain (Hastar's curse spreads to humans too), she needs to be fed like how Hastar needs dough dolls as an offering. She cannot cook like humans. That's why when Vinayak is covered with flour due to the kitchen mishap, she doesn't touch him. She locks his ankle and drags him along to her room and fixes him to the potty bed hole to unscrew her mouth (the mouth which was shut so that she cannot bite people). She wants to eat him directly without touching his flour covered body. Eating Vinayak 's head through a potty hole is synonymous with another reference in Tumbbad ... (read on...) Meanwhile some more metaphors... 1. Sarkar poori zindagi "dhundta raha" par use kucch nahi mila (Sarkar - the old man tried searching all his life but couldn't find anything) Change the gender of Sarkar in Hindi. Sarkar poori zindagi "dhundti rahi" par use kucch nahi mila. The meaning becomes political... The government tried to search the whole time but didn't find anything. Tax evasion and black money... Greed of the rich and corrupt people. 2. Baki Devon ne uspe waar karn shuru kiya. ... Poorti ke Devi ne use apni kokh mein sama liya (The gods started attacking Hastar and hence the goddess of fulfillment took him back in her womb) Explains why Hastar has a wounded blood red body. He is hurt because of the attack of the gods. Also remember that Hastar's statue is not bloody. It's actually a plump baby statue. Real Hasar is sickly and malnourished because he has been starving for ages due to his curse. 3. Hastar has gold coming out of his loincloth esp. from his backside. Generally Indians used to keep their money pouch in front of their loincloth. So why Hastar's like that? Because it's an analogy to a sickly person who cannot digest food. Such people are always hungry and continuously eating but their food remains undigested and pooped out instantaneously (called Bhasma Rog in Sanskrit or in modern terms an untreatable disease called Bulimia Nervosa). The coins coming out of the backside of Hastar's loincloth are literally Hastar *pooping the gold* out while he eats the dough dolls. Remember Grandma trying to eat Vinayak through the potty hole? Poop has a strong reference in Tumbbad. No wonder that money is insidious and hence Pandurang rejects it. 4. Why Hastar multiplied? When gods attacked Hastar he was split into particles and to save him Mother goddess took him back to her womb in his destroyed form (millions of particles). So there are many elemental Hastars in her womb each hungry of food since many ages. They appear as per the proportion of the food offered. Greed is infinite so is Hastar!!

There are not many good horror movies in India coz unlike Hollywood very few horror movies are made and they don't get much budget either...but still there are a few good horror movies to watch..for a change I am recommending a horror comedy movie called Stree next... it's a few years old but still one of the best India has to offer in the Horror genre...This movie creeped you out but Stree would be fun and entertaining🙏🙏🙏😍😍😍

Hastar = The first son of the godess Remember the beginning (could get the wealth/ loincloth couldn't get the godess's food)...that's why he's hungry... They bait him with food to steal some of the coins... Whoever hastar bites gets transformed into something like the boy's father/grandmother... Distorted but undying...they only go to sleep when you say "Sleep or else hastar will come for you" Also the grandma had survived by growing a tree out of herself and getting nutrition from it all those 15 years..after the family had left.

It's like a curse.....hastar was cursed to have all the wealth but no food unless offered...so dose the greed of wealth...who would like to live forever and hungry.... hastar was able to take all the wealth from goddess but no food..... that why his father also got cursed when he had infinite welth (pouch) and that's why son didn't take it in the end.....this whole movie is about greed... nice to watch with you love you guys ❤️ hope we will be able to see another blockbusters with you ❤️☺️

You should check out Stree as well. One of the best Horror Comedy from India. Also maybe Bhool Bhulaiya 1, it's an all time classic.
