You need to play the tuning to hear that it is in tune, once you have tuned it. I have played acoustic for nearly 50 years and I have never heard of this particular technique. I guess we really can learn something new when we get older! Thank you for teaching me this new way of using a tuning fork for a complete tune!

Interesting, never thought of using my tuning fork on every string before. For the most part I’d just tune the A string and then find octave equivalents for every other string from there. Thanks for sharing!

This is fantastic. Thank you. I am visually impaired so I have to stand the guitar on end to use a headstock tuner. I am working on ear training and playing by ear, so this is perfect. I just ordered a 440 tuning fork from Sweetwater.

Wow, I've been using the tuning fork for many, many, many years. I never knew of this method, I normally tune the 5th string with it and then tune the rest by ears. It even works very well on Nylon strings.

Glad to see someone say. I know he is probably just showing for educational purposes but so much faster to just know 1 string and then you could go from there.

I sometimes use an A440 tuning fork to tune my little E at the fifth fret. I then level everything out or tune my G string to a G tune of a guitar I am joining. I find the more we rely on electronic tuners, we start to diminish our ability to tune by ear just my thoughts. But any method of tunning is better in the advent we find we are playing with someone who never had or no longer has an ear to tune properly. I do want to experiment with this method. Thank you for your time in sharing this with us.

Good video, my grandpa taught me how to use a tuning fork to tune a guitar when I was a kid camping. We had no power out there, but we had a fork and a guitar and a fire. Also, another piece of advice for those wanting to do this: NEVER hit your fork up against something hard and solid like a counter top or piece of furniture...it can ruin your fork and make it out of tune.

I'm with Sirirat. I played guitar for decades and have only used a tuning fork! Forget that cell phone stuff. However, I never used the technique you showed. I only used A 440 to get the A 220 string in tune (2nd string) then tuned the other strings against A. Works every time. Only a piano can truly be tuned by the cell phone technique as it uses an even tempered scale. Guitar tuning is somewhat personal preference and an art not a science. I would favor chords (like D) which need extra help due to only using five strings in the chord and other common chords--G, C, F, for example. This works much better for guitar. A piano must give equal advantage to all 12 keys whereas a guitar is likely to use a much smaller set of chords than those available. Some would call these "baby chords". So they are. Make sure F is in tune and your bar chords will sound find. To add to that I would use harmonics on every other string like E-D, A-G, D-B, G-E (high E). If you play the 1st harmonic of the one string and the 2nd harmonic of the other string it will resonate when in tune with the upper string in that sequence. This is only for the adventurous in acoustics. I found it's great way to tune a guitar.

The A string is the 5th string, not the 2nd (which is a B string). Listed 6th to 1st is EADGBe

I was just reading about tuning violins and one person stated "When tuning two adjacent strings together by ear until a beat-less tone is heard, you are using a form of Just Temperament." as opposed to Equal temperament, which is what a piano is normally tuned to and i would presume so are electronic tuners. I was just wondering if the same might apply to guitars tuned by ear especially if one uses harmonics. Hmmm?????

A little bit late, but if you mean the low B string then it would be the same place as the 2nd string (high b string). Which is the 10th fret.

thx for the question jeff! sadly, i would not have a clue about that. Not sure what a baritone guitar is. however, if the strings are the same notes as in my V, i would think that you could....but couldn't swear to it. happy picking !
