Did you ever try a 55 grain fmj bullet fired from a .220 swift or .22-250 @ 3700 or 3800 fps (or something like that) against level 4 ceramic armor? (IIRC you once said it was something you were planning to do).

We tried m855a1 from 22-250 But no stabilization :(
@hpsmith2010
@hpsmith2010 6 жыл бұрын
With a steel tip and a copper core (IIRC) - making for a longer bullet - I can understand that. But even if it was stable, at such high velocities, the higher density of a lead fmj bullet might be a more important factor in armor penetration than the steel tip. I think that's where "the Wound Channel" went wrong in his test: he only tested a "green" bullet.
@BuffRANGE

The whole point of military body armour is that it is 2 layers: a hard layer to deform and flatten the bullet (steel or ceramic), and then the kevlar layer to actually catch the bullet. It's the same principle as with ballistic glass, which is glass and polymer. I'm not saying a proper test would have resulted in no penetration, but you should have done a proper test - with the kevlar between the plate and the ballistic gel.
@BuffRANGE
@BuffRANGE 4 жыл бұрын
That's called an "In conjunction with" (ICW) armor plate/system. Most all NIJ level IV plates unless specifically made as ICW, are what is known as standalone. Meaning that the "catcher" material is integrated into the plate already. In this case, UHMWPE is backing the ceramic strike face.

Why not a center mass hit? All Ceramic is weak on the edges. I call bull shit here. The round on the M993 is the same round loaded in the 30-06 M2 AP round however the 51MM case being way shorter than the parents 63mm case means there is no way in fuck that a M993 is ever going to surpass a 30-06M2 AP round in terms of performance (unless hand loaded), which all level IV plates are rated for.

Sorry the information you have been provided is wrong. M2AP is a 163-165gr hardened steel core penetrator. NIJ spec velocity is 2880 fps. M993 is a 130gr TUNGSTEN core projectile traveling approx. 3000+ fps from a 22" barrel. Monolithic ceramic plates typically are just as strong at the edges. Tungsten is FAR harder than steel. I've shown various times that M993 will penetrate Level IV from 16" barrels.
