High level Tungsten Fakes exist.
My local Coin store bought this one by mistake in bulk deal from a regular Customer.
They didn’t even think to check it.
After she left they found out this one was fake.
Eventually she came back in and they were able to get their money back for it.
Always best to test and always best to use multiple testing methods.
Big shoutout to @CaratCoin and his team for putting on a great show in northern Ohio.
Good turn out of Dealers with lots of true Coin Collectors and Stackers.

So medical xrays are useful because most of the body is transparent, until it hits the bones. In a sense all the tissue and the bone absorb X-rays to a varying extent. Looking at that reflection gives you an image. But metals are very shiny, love to absorb X-rays and reflect them back. So the machine only reads X-rays for an incredibly thin outer layer. I’ve cut open fake coins and used xrf and it’s great at detecting fakes but only if you are willing to sacrifice them

I'm a Silversmith/goldsmith and I learned a valuable lesson when I learned the sound of real gold n silver.. it has a distinct high ping sound where as fakes and non ferrous always will sound dull 👌🏼

@@davidaguilar4523you can do a sort of simple density test with water and a graduated cylinder. Note my phone hates me and I do not mean karate but it keeps correcting me so sorry ahead of time. Anyway using a diamond for example you fill the cylinder to a certain level and then weigh your diamonds with a scale the reads karate then drop the diamond in and then take note of how much water was displaced. Real diamonds displace an exact amount of water per karate and other stones don't. I dont have the specific numbers on hand but a quick google search can give you the desinty relative to water for nearly everything that can be done this way. Diamonds are very close to 3 times the density of water. Also a real diamond will sink or with a small diamond they will float near the surface of the water. Cubic zirconia and moissanite can sink too if large enough and best to have proper tested. Also the water density test could be fooled with alloys like this coin in the video because its weight is on point if the coin is the exact size of a real coin. As the silversmith above is far more experienced than me i encourage any further discussion or corrections to what ive said im always learning. Also when you take a large amount of silver into sell like if you make your own ingnot instead of a density test they will drill into it and take samples to make sure its all pure silver before payout. You could make a smaller ignot out of 50% silver and then drop it in a larger molten pure ignot and screw them. Hope this helps like a said im not a professional just been doing it a long time and what i said was just ment to help somebody without access to a professional with proper testing equipment which is best if dealing with a large amount of pure precious metals and stones as like in the video the fakes keep getting better

@Ken_Dalton thats my quickest way of finding silver in pocket chage. I was at the carwash a while back and got change for a 10 and as it was spitting quarters out i heard that bell ring and i wasnt even really paying attention and i grabbed the quaters and immedianty went and dumped them on the seat of ky truck and boom there is was 1952 washington. The odd thing was this coin was nearly perfect and my guess is it was stolen by some poor guys grandson from his coin collection and then they washed thier car cause ive never seen a silver circulated coin of this age in this good of condition. Id say the only 2 or 3 scuffs i see under magnification are probably from the coin machine. In fact its in such a fine condition my local coin dealer feels confident it will make the grade and make a nice addition to my collection so I am sending it off to be graded. ithink its probably one of those one in a million finds and if it would have went to anybody else in change it probably would have been destroyed in that carwash getting used over and over and over.

Just get from a reliable source - direct from mint, or long established coin shop. Then do some cheap tests as well - ping, magnet, weight, dimensions, specific gravity. That's far safer than buying some other coin and just assuming it's fine.

@@rrtttfthxg2143 Au is the periodic symbol for gold, it stands for the Latin phrase for gold “Aurum”. The machine actually did its job well, I was just joking around. It scans the surface so it can’t tell what’s beneath. What you see in the video isn’t gold plating, plating is such a thin layer of gold coating, kind of like condensation on a fogged up mirror, which this machine can actually detect.

the specific gravity of gold is 98.57% that of tungsten. A alloy of tungsten and a less dense metal (most metals are) could be, and most likely was, made which has the same SG as gold.

No. It's actually because Tungsten has almost the same density. Same reason you'll see pure gold as a mix of Tungsten and gold in some Xray Spectroscopy machines.

Most of us dealers break out the sigma for coins. The XRF is really more specialized and is better for determining the karat of a gold item after you have already determined it is solid gold. An example would be a large Cuban chain you want to check for plumb gold so you can buy it at the right %. And for those that didn’t know, the XRF takes the average goal percentage of different slices at a thin/almost surface level. That is why a thick gold foil can fool it.

@@valenteleanos4774 No, he said it's not safe to test if an object is solid gold. It tests the purity at a surface level. That's the risk you take when you buy jewelry from old people for less than the value of the gold.

I’ve been doing this a half of my life for a living and I use a loupe and a scale combined with knowledge and experience on what to look for . If you are a coin person you learn details and things to look for in numismatic coins that also apply to bullion coins and even bars . If I feel the need to test a coin further I don’t buy it .

@@valenteleanos4774 If it's scrap, melt it, then scan the bead or hopefully puck. I buy a lot of scrap gold and have never been screwed but silver is another story but it's cheap so it doesn't sting like gold would.

@AckzaTV a frequency sensor can also accomplish that test. Using a sensor would eliminate the need to always carry the correct coin. What you're saying is comparable to a gardener blaming the hammer for being a terrible trough. Different tools are used for different reasons. None of which need to measure for the same variable.

Its dipped in gold but since they dont bond you can still retrieve that gold overlay and get something for it probably melts to a dime size puddle.

A friend of mine gave me a gold bracelet that was her late husband's, because I helped her financially. I didn't need the bracelet, so I thought I will sell it and give her the money. The bracelet had an 18kt stamp on it and was pretty heavy. The dealer took a magnet to it and it stuck to it, he handed it back to me and just shook his head. I couldn't tell her that her husband was scammed. What is interesting, is that I cut a link out of the bracelet and it had the same gold appearance all the way thru.

It's a hand held analyzer. It's in a stand with a sample holder. They're probably using it because they're practicing radiation safety.

It's a handheld that is shaped similarly to a gun. Its mounted to the bottom of the stand sitting upwards. Thermo makes an analyzer that can determine if there is a foil over another material. I suspect that instrument would have detected this fake.

the specific gravity of gold is 98.57% that of tungsten. A alloy of tungsten and a less dense metal (most metals are) could be, and most likely was, made which has the same SG as gold.

I got a couple silver dollars now. Every once in a while I flip it and listen till it hits my palm.. god damn magical. 🤣🤣

I’d buy that! I watched it around 2020 when the car plants were booming, rhodium was at 13k an ounce and watched it rise to 39k per ounce and look at where it is today.
