A video that still holds up 10 years later, easy mathematic fundamentals that never change.

Great stuff! Even I could understand this--- his explanation is so clear. Many thanks -- lovely set of pipes as well.

I was given this lesson at my home over twenty-five years ago by my dear friend and "Pipe Major" in his Full Scottish Dress Uniform and Pipes, Nick. An experience never to have been forgotten and so thought his friends at the Ministry of Information at a secret location some were near Vauxhall? Thank you.

Thanks for all the help Bruce, Ive been watching your videos and learning a lot. I bought my first set of pipes maybe 2-3 months ago and they have a set of Crozier Omega Reeds in the drones. From all reports they are a bastard to set up and I can vouch for that. Im still in the middle of setting them up for efficiency, and when I think I have them right, they start to double tone so I muck around with the strength grub screw. Anyway, thanks again, hope to hear from ya. Cheers Luke from QLD, Australia.

Actually, the 220 Hz and 110 Hz are the vibrations of a column of air within the drones. These air columns are excited to vibrate at these frequencies by the drone reeds. If you mouth blow your reeds out of the drones, these are the frequencies that produce 220 HZ and 110 Hz in the drones. The mouth blown beat frequency out of the drone is approx. 635 Hz and 370 Hz. Due to temperature and moisture, drone reeds can move, that is why drones are adjustable.

Sorry Bruce, you were dead right and I was dead wrong. I rigged up an aluminium stock, drilled a hole in the side for a tight fit for a small lavalier mic. and recorded the mouth blown frequencies. I then played back the recording checking the output frequencies with the Braw Bagpipe tuner and both drones were spot on. i.e. 240 and 120 Hz.

Thanks for this. I wanted to know what the frequencies and notes were for the drones, so that I could make bagpipes music using a computer.
