Hi Troy, I am just starting out on learning to play c6 lap top. It all seems a bit daunting at the moment but I will persevere and would like to thank you for your very informative lessons. I am 70 years of age and I don't think you are ever too old to learn. Regards from Peter in the UK.

I’ve played a fair amount of slide on my Regal resonator (mostly open G tuning) and I’ve always wanted a steel guitar. I have some electronics I pulled from an entry level Gretsch, and I’ve been gearing up to build a lap steel. While looking for information on tunings I found this video… What a wealth of useful information! Great video!

When teaching scales, especially the major scale I always found a piano or keyboard comes in really handy. Most beginners have an easier time seeing whole and half step patterns on a keyboard than a fretted instrument. As soon as a "C" major scale is played on all the white keys they see those half steps pretty clear.
@alsmith92843 жыл бұрын
WOW ! Knowing where the half steps are! I feel a huge weight is lifted off if me. 3 to 4 & 7 to 8. Einstein always wanted things brought down to the simplest form. THANK YOU GENIUS!

I'm going to be building a lap steel and this is giving me a lot of food for thought. Right now I'm considering the scale length and string gauge requirements. Adding in the various options for tuning somewhat simplifies my decisions. Thank you very much.
@filianablanxart83052 жыл бұрын
String Gage = Totally depends upon your Tuning . Scale Length = What length do you want ? If you also play dobro , 25 inch will have commonality of muscle memory . Lap Steels in isolation typically have a shorter scale length to make slants easier to reach . Lengths vary , but 22.5 inch is common .

Thank you Troy, you've helped me better understand how the fret-board and different chord inversions work. I have recently been trying my Dobro in G6 tuning raising the 4th string to E and it's neat how one can change from say A Maj to A minor just by sliding up the neck 3 fret positions. Cool Man. Now I can start to get my head around your scale patterns in the next lesson. Cheers

Hello Troy, I'm kind of a rookie lap steel player. For playing mainly blues and rock, which tuning do you think would be the simplest to play and the most effective for those genres? Thanks a lot.

Troy, I always enjoy your videos. I wish i could watch them all but, I'm always on a tight schedule. I've used several of your tequniques I learned or rather have stolen from you, he he he he he, thanks. Okay, I own 3 resonators all tuned to different tunings (open e, open d, and open g). I also own 3 lap steels, one being a double neck that I built from a kit. The double neck I have tuned to C6 (CEGACE) on the neck closest to me and then Cmaj7 on the rear neck (CEGBEG) and I use that to mimick Rusty Young and Poco tunes. Lots of fun. I do have a question on open G tunings for the dobro. I notice that the country guys all tune in octaves, like your video here GBDGBD. I've always tuned DGDGBD. Maybe because I'm really an old rock and roller and I play tons of blues and that's the tuning I used for all the George Thorogood tunes we did back in the day. I notice how near effortless the country guys play a dobro where s the blues guys and rockers sound totally different and a bit more sloppy. Is it just technique or is it in the magical octave tuning you use? I include two of my videos from my channel to give you a sample of my limitations. My double neck kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qp9-oM1zrbDRpHk.html and a live version playing an open E reso covering Elmore James Dust my Broom kzfaq.info/get/bejne/esmIjcamua2yaXk.html

Different Tuning has different pressure on the neck. when a thicker string is tightened higher. Throws off the balance your neck is used too.

True, on a Round Neck guitar . On a Square Neck dobro or a lap steel , the effect is negligible .

Awesome lesson. I've been playing dobro for a long time and just starting to dabble in C6 on lap. The way that you've tied things back to the dobro triads is fantastic. In fact, now I will pay more attention to the Xs and triangle patterns in my dobro playing. There are so many gems in this lesson. Thank you so much for this. I will be back to rewatch this many many times. What's the name of the Mike Auldridge Gm song?

From String 6 to 1 - GBDGBD. String 6 goes up from E to G. String 5 goes up from A to B. String 4 stays in D. String 3 stays in G. String 2 stays in B. String 1 goes down from E to D. This is based off of a regular tuned 6 string guitar. Hope that helps. 🎼

Hi Troy, glad to find your videos! Very clear lessons, thanks! I am total beginner in lap steel, and want to learn to play standard rock/blues. I have two questions: 1) My lap steel is 7 string. I am a little confused on how to make tuning, for example open G. Any suggestions? 2) I am total beginner with lap steel. Do you recommend open G or open D for rock style? Thanks!
@nightrainbows10324 жыл бұрын
Santiago Dotta either tuning will work for rock though Open D will probably be better because of the abundant 5 chords(Root & 5th=power chords). 7 strings? If you are just starting out do yourself a favor and leave a string off and stick with 6. It will make learning from others easier. I realize these posts are years old but what the heck, maybe this will help someone else who stumbles on this.

GBDGBD for dobro is the equivalent of the EADGBE Standard Tuning for vertical guitars . 90% of dobro players will use GBDGBD 90% of the time for all genres of music . Probably the best known lap steel player today to mainstream audiences is Megan Lovell of the Blues/ Blues Rock duo Larkin Poe . Megan was a Bluegrass dobro player before electrifying . She thereby plays Everything in GBDGBD , and if you check any of their music on youtube , you will see she can definitely rock out in GBDGBD .

Troy if you were playing a 10 string lap steel in C6th, would you tune it the same as the PSG or no? I'm waiting on my new psg to get here so until then I'm using a 10 string Hudson practice board with a pickup in it. I currently have it tuned in C6th same as the PSG with a D on top.

Thanks for the excellent instructions. Can you explain how to decide which tuning is best to use? I'm completely new to the dobro and hope to use it in a combination of country and Celtic music but I'm not sure on which criteria you use to decide on a tuning.
@nightrainbows10324 жыл бұрын
For country music standard Dobro G tuning will be your best bet. GBDGBD. For Celtic, the same G tuning or try DADGAD .

anyone know of a demo on how to tune a converted guitar-to-lap steel, where you keep most of strings the same as the E A D G B E standard guitar tuning, but just tune one string up and one string down, no more than a half step, to get a maj. 6 chord? I worked it out but can't find my notes ...oof!!
@gxtmfa4 жыл бұрын
If you tune the A and D down half steps and the G up a half step, you’d get an E6 (E G# C# G# B E). You might also get something cool out of tuning the D down a half step and the G down a half step. Then it’d be E A C# F# B E. Technically an A 6/9
hi! can you show us how apart should the strings be from the fretboard for proper action?
@filianablanxart83052 жыл бұрын

Very confusing. Lost me in first paragraph of what you spoke about. For a new person trying to learn for the first time, you lose them. One has to teach like they themselves are learning for the first time. I find that everywhere I go, referring to Lap-steel, the teachers, don't take into account, that student knows nothing, and must be taught slowly so they understand everything your saying. One thing I did learn (on my own), was if your going to play lap-steel, learn where every note is along the whole necks length. If you know where the notes are along the neck, play the notes shown on sheet music, and at least you'll get a tune played (or the melody of the song). What's explained here, won't help me transpose music to different tunings spoke about.
@filianablanxart83053 жыл бұрын
I'm not Troy , but just reading this I am unsure of your context . Brand new , knows nothing about music or instruments at all ? Knows music , but new to string instruments ? Knows music , knows other stringed instruments , but new to lap style with tone bar as opposed to " regular guitar " fingering ? You post " seems to me " to express wishing to play single note lead style exclusively throughout entire songs as very first thing . That is decidedly Not a total beginner technique .
