There actually is a scene similar to this in the anime. Takumi's dad gets a Subaru WRX and then gets him to start delivering tofu in it instead. Because Takumi is used to RWD, he doesn't like the Subaru WRX at first because of how it handles being AWD. He tells his dad he doesn't want to drive it anymore and his dad makes him continue to deliver tofu in it instead despite his protests.

This includes the rebuild series and tofugelion. There is an excelent video about this theory on the crunchyroll channel.
