Good idea, I just found Paratinder cord yesterday. Its orange paracord with a cord on the inside that can be used as a spark catch from the lighter or flint strike. Awesome multi purpose rope.

Don't know if anyone has said this before, but to get a butane torch working properly you need to empty out all of the gas AND all of the air before refilling. The way to do that is to press down on the refill nozzle until nothing comes out. (Easiest when the lighter is almost completely empty of butane...) Then refill. This way there will be nothing but butane in the lighter. (make sure the lighter is upside down when refilling)

I Have 2 of the military great lighter overall but the rubberised finish doesnt last long have had one of them 2+years and still works perfect once you use good quality gas.

I`ve got the military one for couple of years and its the best outdoor lighter. Whenen its get dirt you can reasamble it and clean up. The swith is a graet thing because you can manipulate with fire. Great in workshop too

Awesome lighters! I haven't had any problems with my bic lighters in the cold or high altitude but I have had a problem with them going sideways or upside down. This would help a lot with that problem. Also that military butane lighter with the locking ability is pretty cool.

Hello LS Cool little devices. Im an old zippo guy, having the same one since 1986, but admittedly, its not very good for the sideways snow fall. I picked up one of these turbo lighters in 2009 during a trip to Nordcap Norway on my motorbike. Other than impurities in bad gas, it has worked flawlessly. They do suffer in minus (below freezing) temperatures, which is easily remedied by putting it in an inside pocket before use. These are more practical than a bic, andvthe obvious benefit of not needibgvto throw it away As always, thx for sharing!

Great vid, i have had my turbo flame for over a year and now it stays at home. It has let me down time and time again, especially in the cold weather. Refilling is a nightmare, having to empty out all the air first, and hit and miss if it refills, then constant adjustment to get it right. So back to my zippo never lets me down and ferro rod :)
@livingsurvival
@livingsurvival 9 жыл бұрын
Great comment brother, the one is giving me problems now and then but the other works well. I think it's just hit and miss but yes refilling etc is an extra step for sure. I think the benefit would be as secondary lighter or someone who needs a smaller torch like flame for their job etc. Thanks for the comment.

My grandpa showed me a neat trick about lighters, before riffing them put the lighter in the freezer for at least an hour, what it does is the cold causes a vacuum so when you fill it up much more gas goes in and less air stays makes the lighter run for much longer without needing to refill.

I made the same mistake when I bought that lighter, the reason the flame is fluttering is because you didnt drain the pressure from the gas tank before you filled it with butane. That's why the flame flickers and the tank is half empty, you can also adjust the output with the screw on the bottom and make the flame bigger! But try not to make it too big! V.Reliable lighter the Ranger, it's lasted me two years and when I bought it it was in Black not Green, the rubber wears off over time. The base looks like lead and aluminum - ie: Tin. The cap eventually goes a bit loose but it can be fixed if your prepared to disassemble the lighter. @kingmabb I too experienced issue's with the color if you drop it in the dark and don't happen to have a torch at hand. But my biggest issue with lighters is having them drop out of my pocket, including another ranger, it's got a hole on the lighter for a lanyard and people should use that! That way the lighter doesnt drop out of your pocket when crossing a river with a rope bridge like it did with my previous ranger the day after I bought it, forcing me to buy the one I have now! :D

I had the turbo flame and I used some of the best butane on the market in it. It lasted about a year, but the starter went and it was junk after that. Sometimes you need to empty out the butane with a small screwdriver if airpockets develop. I flush it a couple times if I experienced clogging issues. Using unfiltered butane isn't recommended. I guess it was worth the $20 I paid, but wouldn't recommend it for daily use. In a bug out bag or while camping/hiking, it's good to have.

starter replacement is a pretty easy enough fix if you got a bit of skill and you like the lighter and want to try and prolong it's use , had an asg pocket torch from 2000 my cousin gave me that has not worked since then and i found it recently in the drawer and got the piezo in it working again its my pride n joy lighter and i just see they are like 60 bucks no idea if that was the price back then too

The most popular and best is still a Zippo. Pack extra Flint's in bottom and a can of fluid in your pack. Works well in wind, rain, and freezing temps. Extra fluid can be used to help start fires on rainy days. Been a Zippo owner since 1966 and still have and use my first Zippo including 8 years of military service in 60's & 70's even in the jungle.

Zippos are nice, I carry one, but they are very unreliable. The fuel dries out fast, and can leak everywhere. I keep mine coated with vaseline to help extend the life but the max I can get is maybe 2 weeks if I don't use it. Any situation where you can use a match, you can use a butane lighter, and butane is far more cheaper, reliable, and compact than a pack of matches. Of course, if you want true reliability, nothing beats a nice thick flint rod.

dual flame is only a cool factor, temp is still 1300C with the difference that you drain your gas in half the time with a dual flame compared to a single flame, so personally I would never buy a dual flame, and thease kind of lighters I want with a 100% waterproof lid, otherwise I dont trust them to work when I really need them. I've bought and replaced no end of turboflame lighters like these, and each of them are---in my opinion, anyway---a waste of money. Butane lighters are a great addition to anyone's kit, but the trick is finding one that doesn't fail after the first refill. I've even had the piezo igniters fail to spark, I don't understand how a product can be so consistently sub-par.

It really strikes me as disturbing how many people are alienated and oblivious to the reality of pollution and harming the Earth. Sure it’s not your fault as society that we live doesn’t promote in any way eco friendly practices and we aren’t educated even in school about the problems of pollution. But I insist to try spreading awareness of this important neglected issue. Plastic mostly harms the environment, specially the aquatic ecosystems, you have no idea how many sea turtles, seals, octopuses and many other innocent animals die all the time due to garbage mainly plastic being dumped into the sea everyday by greedy companies and governments 😢

I loved the aggressive design and functionality of my Turboflame Ranger. However, it lasted maybe a year before the flame became intermittent and stopped igniting all together. I pulled troubleshooting guides online and tried various solutions but no joy. Then the button stopped working so that was that. I was only using it to ignite wooden lighterknot matches to start my grill, so it wasn't like I'd even put it through hell in the wild. The lighter itself is very rugged and durable being that it's made from an aluminum like alloy. It survived being sat on at least. The rubberized coating as well did not last long before it became sticky as the material broke down. It's the same spray on rubberized coating they put on computer mouses that breaks down after a while. I don't know why anyone uses the stuff. It's a shame. I really liked the way it looked, I loved how durable it was, but alas, it just didn't function for long.

All lighters eventually need to be taken apart and cleaned. Imagine always using a gun and never cleaned it. It wouldn’t work and maybe even blow up. You have to take it apart and clean the nozzle pieces. The screen gets clogged. Like a pipe but after tanks of burning. The button didn’t work? So it didn’t click or spark? Collect all lighters that use a piezo igniter by pressing a button. Or grab a cheap bbq lighter and take the part out. Ive fixed dozens easily and most times for free. Tutorials are on KZfaq everywhere. Your lighter is still good. Everything needs to be freshly maintained every year or so

Nice tabletop review. Obviously, you have not used these lighters for anything heavy duty over a longer period of time. Because if you had, that green rubber coating would have been worn off. I have the Ranger and - in my opinion - it's not very impressive when it comes to build quality. My Turboflame Ranger has ended up in a drawer somewhere and will probably never be used again.

WARNING: Butane lighters look good but are invariably a piece of crap. I had the Ranger. Looks good BUT a bastard to fill (surprisingly) and, after one month, exploded in my hand. Now I treat kit well and am no klutz. So it was not the way it was treated. It was one more example (as if we needed it) of the ever present fact of life that 'flash is bad.' Stick to tried and tested ie Zippo, Bic or, my favourite, the Clipper. Oh, and there's something else. All this discussion about cold weather. The one time that you can guarantee that a butane lighter will absolutely fail you is at high altitude or in cold conditions. Looks good, but fails fast.
