But with the TG modded for RGB/component, can the CD games play the same way as the TG with RGB display? Someone told me that the cd audio quality will not be present because it exits one way, whatever that means. So what he told me is I have to drill a hole on the TG for a 3.5mm audio jack, then connect the red and white audio cable to the back of the cd unit to have that cd audio quality. Can you confirm this?

The European release console didn't have an rf modulator inside. Its main output was a din socket which provided composite. An external rf modulator came in a separate accessories box along with the power supply. Just thought it was worth mentioning.

Huh? RF = Radio Frequency = TV channel for a TV tuner. Koryuu does not have a built-in TV tuner for demodulating RF. You’d have to connect something like a VCR to demodulate it (convert RF to composite or something) for Koryuu.

The European PAL TurboGrafx non-16 does not have an RF output. It has a 240-degree DIN5 multi-out. I should know because I documented the pinout publicly and made my own AV cable. The “accessory pack” included AV cables and an RF modulator. This was likely so that they could make a different accessory pack for different regions.

It was the added purchase of the Turbo Tap for multiplayer & Turbo Booster for AV that put the purchase price of the TurboGrafx-16 well above the price of the Sega Genesis which led me to purchase that Sega Genesis over the TurboGrafx-16 back in 1990 I think it was. I’d eventually buy the TG-16 and enjoy it (along with frustrations) during the 16Bit generation

I happen to fall into that niche of using a CRT that has S-video as the highest quality input (and can I just say that S-video looks amazing on CRTs). However, I'm not really a Turbo-Grafx fan. I have one, but I haven't touched it in like two years. I'd probably play it more if I didn't have such a huge backlog of games I want to play on other systems.

The problem with using the console for AV with the CD attachment is that you won’t get stereo CD audio. You have to get audio from the CD attachment for that. This is why the Super CD-ROM² blocks the AV port on the inserted console and forces you to plug the AV cable into it.

The Hyperkin and LevelHike HDMI cables DO source RGB, but they do it with a scaler that doesn’t properly handle 240p. In other words, they don’t properly support the native resolution of the only console they fit! That’s pretty bad. The problem with Hyperkin’s Composite adapter is that it literally just taps the pins on the back with none of the electronics required to isolate them. They don’t properly attenuate the video or amplify the audio like a TurboBooster or TurboBooster Plus would.

Missed one: The UperGrafx. I have the UperGrafx UGX-02 myself and it gives me DVI/HDMI and lets me play games from the SD card. It’s been around a lot longer than the new Super HD System³ Pro, which finally does the same thing so it’s weird seeing it be the only mention. That said, the Super HD System³ Pro does appear to be better in every way. ;) Until now, UperGrafx was the only attachment for upgraded video output with the proper YUV composite colors (RGB output uses a different color table) and it was also the only one with flawless digital to digital lossless video (RGB or YUV)… no analog conversion.

This may sound like a silly request, but do you reckon you could compare the PC Engine Duo's composite output with the composite on the regular PC Engine? As I said in my previous comment, I'm rather impressed with the video quality of a stock PC Engine Duo's composite signal. I don't think the composite signal you showed at 11:00 is a fair representation of what all versions of the consoles can do.

It's great to have options. It really depends on what kind of TV you use as to which option is best and or preferred. I use a CRT TV and even though I can install Component video for these systems, I still like S-video more. Could be due to nostalgia but when I use RGB or Component(strong colors), it makes me feel like I'm playing on an emulator. Where as S-video sharpens the picture a lot but still retains the Composite color scheme which I personally like more. S-video is also a cheap internal mod for people to do. I charge just $29. So it's also a budget option. Thanks again for the plugging my work :)

I have a Turbo Duo that's being recapped. The RGB mod (if I get it) cable is my main problem. The back of my TV has composite, component, and HDMI inputs. No SCART. I would need an adapter (SCART to composite, component, or HDMI) that, based on reviews I've seen, all indicate lag of some sort. Does a single cable exist, or can be made, with a male 8-pin DIN connector to either a male composite, component, or HDMI connection? Is it really that complicated?
@AdamKoralik

I'd suggest getting HD Retrovision component cables instead of SCART cables. At that point if your TV supports that resolution via component you're good. If not, you'll need something like the RetroTink.

It always boggles the mind when companies make stupid decisions like not have composite on a device like this. The most recent head scratcher for me was the Xbox 360 and PS3 never including an HDMI cable in the box for an HD system. I believe there was one special Xbox 360 that had one but I don't remember which one. I bought a PS3 SS right before the system was pulled from shelves and it still did not have an HDMI cable. I have a PC Engine Duo. I gotta be honest, as much as I swear by RGB SCART, I never had much incentive to install an RGB mod on my console. The composite video output is surprisingly excellent - and so it should if that was your only option! It looks almost on par with RGB. To illustrate my point, here's a recording I did using my stock PC Engine Duo and official composite cables - and I was using your old SCART to HDMI device to record it too: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9KcmpCZ1dS1h6M.html Of course, I also recently installed RetroArch on my PlayStation Vita - now it can play PC Engine card and CD games!

I'm spending too much time finding adapter cable video upgrades for my Turbo Duo. I never complained about the video quality, it's just that I needed a full recap since the American made Duos weren't put together well. 1upRestorations offers an RGB Mod with the full recap, but it's just becoming a ridiculous hassle finding the right combination of cables for 'better' picture quality. I think I'll stick with the original 5-pin Din to RCA composite cable!

@@AdamKoralik I agree that, to the human eye, you probably wouldn't see the difference on screen comparing the two signals for a 240p / 480i console on a crt. But they're still different signals. RGB is simply red green blue, where as component is Y (Luma & sync) + Pb ( difference between Y and Blue) and Pr (difference between Y and Red). RGB requires more bandwidth and, as you said, is not capable of high definition (480p and over). YPbPr was created and derived from rgb to keep the benefits of separating colors but also increasing bandwidth; I just wouldn't say component cables give you RGB.
