Hello.
Today, we are in the Türkeli district of Sinop in the 18th and final part of our Middle Black Sea series.
Have fun watching…
It is surrounded by Ayancık in the east, Taşköprü district of Kastamonu in the south, Çatalzeytin district of Kastamonu in the west and the Black Sea in the north.
The population of the district is 22 thousand and its area is 421 square kilometers.
Türkeli is a town on the skirts of İsfendiyar Mountains, the inner parts of which are covered with forest areas.
When we look at the economic structure of Türkeli, we see that there is one parquet and one glass factory, as well as timber form workshops, furniture workshops and wire factories in Güzelkent Town.
Due to the scarcity of agricultural lands, agricultural production and animal husbandry are carried out to meet the needs of the people. Despite this, there is an ostrich farm established in Hacıköyü in 1999.
Trout facilities were established in Çatak-Örencik and Gökçealan villages, bringing vitality to the district's economy. Forestry is another source of livelihood in the district. There is a fisherman's shelter in the district, where fishing is also common.
Self-grown chestnuts are an undeniable source of income. In recent years, it is seen that people have started to grow walnuts and other fruit types.
It is at the transition point of the western and eastern Black Sea climate characteristics of the district. It is rainy in all seasons and the humidity is high.
As you go from the coast to the interior, the areas covered with green forests increase. It is possible to see all shades of green and yellow in the region. There are yellow and purple rhododendrons at the bottom of the forest. In addition, the land of the district is very rich in terms of mushroom species.
Türkeli district center has a history of nearly a century as a settlement. The district remained under the rule of the Pontus, then the Anatolian Seljuk State, and then the İsfendiyaroğulları Principality; In 1461, it passed under Ottoman rule with the Black Sea expedition of Fatih Sultan Mehmet.
Center of Türkeli and its environs in the Ottoman period; Its current name is “Ayandon”, which is Hamamlı Village.
The old name of the district center, which is now known as Türkeli, is "Yarna Village". The region we are in is called “Cape Antonios” in old maps and “Cape Ayandon” in newer maps. In the Republican era, with the prohibition of names of foreign origin since 1922, "Yarna Village" was named "Gemiyani Village" in reference to the ship ruins on the coast. The district has taken the name Türkeli since 1957 when it became the center.
Since 80% of the people of the district and the population in the villages work abroad as workers, the population doubles in the summer months, and as a result, there is a large amount of foreign currency inflow to the district. This, in turn, improves the construction of modern buildings, thus the construction sector, and adds vitality to the trade of the district. Construction workmanship and craftsmanship are among the important livelihoods of the people.
The support of expatriates is seen all over the district. Thinking of the relatives and the people of the region they left behind, people built Türkeli State Hospital with a capacity of 50 beds and 3 polyclinics. Almost all of the hospital's expenses are covered by donations.
The influence of expats in the district is obvious. When the people of the region could not find a source of livelihood, they went to Europe as a worker. Thanks to the resources brought by the expats in the summer months, the district is standing.
Developments in the field of tourism are increasing every year in the district, where the sea and the forest embrace with its geographical structure and natural beauty. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of tourists with the developments in transportation.
There is a modern hotel and a teacher's house in the district center. Although there are plenty of tea gardens and picnic areas on the central coast, they are not enough. There are many beaches suitable for swimming along the coastline.
That's it from Sinop Türkeli.
With Türkeli, our Central Black Sea series is coming to an end.
Goodbye for now, see you in new series.
