Size: In general, male turkeys (toms) are larger than female turkeys (hens). Toms tend to be bulkier and heavier. Head and Wattle: Male turkeys typically have larger and more prominent wattles (the fleshy, dangling growths on the neck and head) compared to females. They also have a more developed caruncle, a bumpy, fleshy growth on their head. Beard: Male turkeys have a beard, which is a cluster of long, hair-like feathers on their chest. This beard is absent in female turkeys. Tail Feathers: The tail feathers of male turkeys are usually longer and more colorful than those of female turkeys. Toms use their colorful tail feathers in courtship displays. Feather Coloration: In some turkey species, such as the wild Eastern turkey, males tend to have brighter and more vibrant plumage compared to the more muted colors of females. However, this can vary among turkey species. Gobble: Male turkeys are known for their distinctive gobbling call, which they use to attract females during the breeding season. Female turkeys may make quieter, more subdued sounds. Spurs: Adult male turkeys typically have spurs, which are sharp, pointed growths on the back of their legs. These spurs are used in fights with other males and are absent in females. Behavior: During the breeding season, male turkeys may display aggressive and dominant behaviors, such as strutting and fanning their tail feathers. Female turkeys are more likely to display submissive behaviors. Nesting and Incubation: Female turkeys are the ones responsible for nesting and incubating the eggs. If you observe a turkey sitting on a nest, it is likely a female. FOR POULTS Feather Growth: Male poults typically have faster feather growth than female poults. This can sometimes be observed in the wing feathers and tail feathers. Males may have longer and more pronounced feathers. Head Color: In some turkey breeds, the head color can be a subtle clue. Male poults may have a slightly more vibrant or bolder coloration on their heads compared to females. Size: Although size differences are not as pronounced as in adults, you may notice that male poults are slightly larger or heavier than female poults. Behavior: Observing the behavior of poults can also be helpful. Males may exhibit more aggressive or dominant behavior even at a young age, such as pecking or challenging other poults. Females may be more passive. Tail Feathers: In some cases, male poults may start to show slightly longer or more colorful tail feathers, similar to adult males.
