Tomorrow is opening day here in Alabama. Going with my grandfather who lost nearly all of his hearing due to a ton of blood loss a few years ago. This will only be my second time turkey hunting, but he has done it for over 20 years and has a huge passion for it. He's excited to be back in the woods turkey hunting for the first time in a couple of years, and even more excited to be taking me. But im a little nervous, yall wish us luck. Came here for a few tips. thanks for the time spent and tips in the video. Keep up the good work.

You say not to wear a logo with brightness on your hat for Turkeys? How come WA State requires Turkey hunters to wear 400 sq inches of blaze orange or fluorescent Hunter pink? If a Hunter is to be visible to other hunters, then how the hell are they to hide from Turkeys? I thought that turkeys are color blind. In fact, I really haven’t found any videos of any Hunter, wearing orange and hunting on public land. Washington requires your hunting blinds that has orange on them too so you don’t get yourself shot by other hunters during the busy season. Anyway, thought I’d share because to be ready for Turkey hunting also means to be ready for a game warden.
@WeekendWoodsmen Жыл бұрын
Some states do require it. Turkeys are not color blind. The biggest thing is not moving and bright colors will make it easier for them to spot movement. So we avoid it on our hats if we can because your head tends to move a lot.
@ahmada.thabata86154 жыл бұрын
Should you wear blaze orange?
@WeekendWoodsmen4 жыл бұрын
If you are in an area where you know there are hunters you may way to put something orange above you but there is no need to wear it. (Just be careful when you are carrying your decoys around)

Thanks for the comment! In most states yes, always double check your regulations though. As for effectiveness get a good turkey load like long beard xr and pattern your gun at various distances to know what your effective range is. We have videos on patterning our guns on our channel.

Shouldn’t you wear orange for turkey hunting?
@WeekendWoodsmen5 жыл бұрын
No, turkey hunting is done in full camo. Turkeys can see color so you want to make sure you are fully blending into the environment. You have to be careful and aware of your surroundings when turkey hunting. You should avoid wearing anything with, red, white, or blue when turkey hunting.

Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention to check your local game laws. Some states require that you have an orange hat on when moving or an orange band around the tree when you are set up. The states we hunt allow all camo. Thanks again for the question!

@WeekendWoodsmen5 жыл бұрын
We agree those are the best to minimize movement and we use them too, however due to the longer learning curve associated with them we didn’t feel it fit in an essential turkey gear video. Thank you for you comment and good luck this year!
@gogitr89045 жыл бұрын
@@WeekendWoodsmen I'm glad you said that because I just bought some cutter calls yesterday from B.P.S and some of my calls sound like animals other than turkey according to my sons and wife. Do you recommend me hunting from my deer pop up tent with the calls you've presented since I've never turkey hunted b4 and our Texas season starts tomorrow and I wanna go next weekend maybe? I'm more likely going alone as I do all my hunts deer, hog, squirrel etc... I only have KZfaq to guide me.
@WeekendWoodsmen5 жыл бұрын
You can hunt out of any sort of a ground blind to hide your movement. Turkeys are NOT like deer and do not need to get used to blinds, so you can take it out and set it up the morning of the hunt and turkeys will walk right up to it. You can even set it right out in the middle of a field. If you know the turkeys pattern from scouting you won’t need to call. Otherwise you may want to just get a box call or something that is easy to learn. Good luck!
@gogitr89045 жыл бұрын
@@WeekendWoodsmen Ok thanks! That makes me feel like I'll have success , I duck hunted for the first time last year and I loved it except for the wading in the mud and gator filled waters so turkey hunting will be the new thing for 2019.

@WeekendWoodsmen6 жыл бұрын
You are right, jake decoys are always an option, and we use them but haven’t put a really jake tail on it because neither of us ever want to burn a tag on a jake, but we have definitely thought long and hard about it! That is also something that is optional for a beginner.
@suzymcalister79306 жыл бұрын
You don't need to burn a tag on a jake. All of my tails go on the wall with the beard. 20 bucks is what I paid to get a jake tail mailed to my house from ebay. Also a possibility to use a tail off of a domestic bronze turkey if you have access to them.
