I would like to make a point here, many years ago I was flying from Cyprus to UK and we got stranded for two days in an airport in Belgium due to bad snow conditions, on the flight were a few Turkish Cypriots with Republic of Cyprus EU passports and Greek Cypriots, for some reason no one could get through on their phones to the Cyprus embassy to get assistance, a Turkish Cypriot called the Turkish embassy asking for assistance to get to UK and the Turkish embassy replied ''YOU ARE NOT A TURK/TURKISH, you are a Turkish Cypriot, a Cypriot, and a Greek Cypriot called the Greek embassy to also ask for assistance and they replied the same, ''YOU ARE NOT A GREEK you are a Cypriot''', that was a factual moment of truth, that Cypriots no matter Turkish or Greek are just Cypriots and need to unite as one and not allow foreign states to use them as puppets against each other. The sooner Turkish and Greek Cypriots understand that they one race born from the same soil, the sooner they can unite their country as one. No one is closer to the culture and customs of Cyprus than Turkish and Greek Cypriots, they have very little in common with Turkey or Greece.

Hi guys! I'm greek speaking cypriot and i appreciate your video. I had never the opportunity to listen about how you feel for the situation in general. As a citizen of a half country and the memories of my family i feel divided myself about my identity and the future of our country. In the passing of my life i had different prospectives about whats right for a solution, how your side feels, if you agree with Erdogan, Tatar, what is your opinion about Greek-Cypriots and the events took part before 1974. I would be glad to hear more about you and hope someday a solution for both citizens of the country comes.

It really hurts us allot for Cyprus to be divided this long. Also the older generation have to live through it. Like I did. There is allot of things that I hate is 1. Is the politics. 2. Divided line 3. My family home that I hold the deed have not seen my home in over 40 years in the South part of the Island. 4. Love ones and family are dead or still missing. 5. It still hurts me and hunt me to this day. 6. The biggest one that I HATE I'm sorry if I find it to harsh is the British.

The most symbolically ironic thing is that the Republic of Cyprus flag (The government that officially in practise should govern the whole of the island but is now only used on the Greek Cypriot side) together with their coat of arms and the original Cypriot Lira was in fact deigned by a Turkish Cypriot, Ismet Guney. Barely anyone knows this and they dont teach this in the South which is really sad. The conflict begun decades before 1974, all of which is well documented in history and its nice that in recent years there is starting to be a gradual shift in awareness of this, I think mostly because of social media. I like to think that those who are primitive minded and ignorant is their own problem not anyone else's. Dont let anyone tell you or make you feel that youre not a true Cypriot and definitely don't let any ignorant Brit tell you otherwise, especially when Britain is the country that contributed enormously and holds big responsibility to the division and bloodshed in Cyprus.
@chrysostomosvassili2293
@chrysostomosvassili2293 2 жыл бұрын
Greek Cypriots are fully aware that the flag and lira was designed by Turkish Cypriot, and are proud of both facts. Over 95% of all ethnic Turkish Cypriots have been given Republic of Cyprus EU passports, as citizens of the EU State Republic of Cyprus, which automatically allows Turkish Cypriots the same rights as Greek Cypriots and other Cypriot citizens. Their are some Turkish Cypriots who were denied renewal of their passports but they were poetical officials supporting the Erdogan regime, whos activities show loyalty to Turkey and not Cyprus, but other than those few in that category, all Turkish Cypriots have their EU Republic of Cyprus Passports renewed and full access to Republic of Cyprus universities, medical care and other services as all other citizens of the Republic of Cyprus do. I live in Limassol, I see Turkish people and families who have left the north and now reside in the South, who have set up businesses, their kids go to school and they all mix as do Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots do in the UK, without any differences between them. When I asked them what made them come over to the south, I got a few answers and they were as follows - (1) no freedom of speech, they could not speak out against Turkey and Erdogan policy in Cyprus, without being victimized or arrested, (2) they could not fly their flag which they considered the Republic of Cyprus flag proudly flown on the south as their flag to, and if they tried to do so in the north they would be victimized or arrested, (3) they all openly say that they are not Turks, they have very little in common with Turks who live in Cyprus and Turkey, often referring to them as black-beards (not sure what that actually means) and that they speak a different dialect, they do not share the same culture or customs and have very little in common with them, and insisted that they are just Cypriots, Turkish speaking Cypriots, but Cypriot, as are Greek Cypriots and the fact that they speak Turkish or Greek was irrelevant, the one thing that did not separate them was the fact that they are Cypriots whos cultures and customs were interlinked much the same (4) They said that in the South people can voice what ever they want politically, its a true democracy, whereas in the North you cannot and if you tried you will soon be arrested for it (5) Lastly they felt they were lied to for so long, whereby they where made to believe that if they went back to the south they would not be safe and harmed and that they could not be protected and that their properties will be confiscated from the north, all of which they found to be propaganda and lies to stop Turkish Cypriots returning to their homes in the south. (6) they said in the south they have the opportunity to better prosper and for their children to have a better life and future as well as open access to Europe as all Cypriots do in the south. (7) They all felt that Cyprus should be left to Cypriots and should stop being a puppet to Turkey and Greece, they did not like the government in the North acting as a puppet state for Turkey for the benefit of Turkey rather than Turkish Cypriots (8) They do not like their country Cyprus overrun by Turks from mainland Turkey who have taken over and make Turkish Cypriots feel like second class citizens in their own country. In short, it sounded like these were people who just wanted to be Cypriots, not Turks, Not Greeks, just Cypriot and I found them to be very proud and courageous to take such a stance. Lastly they expressed that they have never once experienced any animosity, prejudices or other negative remarks, the most common remark they hear from the south is ''welcome home''. It seems to me that by maintaining segregation of Turkish and Greek and other Cypriots Cypriots, the foreign powers remain in control. ps. in the south of Cyprus I hear 90% of the time English spoken, no matter where you go, its a very metropolitan culture on the south where you will bump into so many different races and languages without dominance of one another.

This is happening because Turkish Cypriots originally, culturally and genetically, were Greek Cypriots and are still related to this day to the majority native Greek Cypriots of the island. They merely converted to Islam and were subsumed by Turkish culture during the Ottoman days and lost touch with their native ancient historical lineage and culture, which predates any Turkish/Ottoman occupation or influences on the island. Let's remember who inhabited the island first. This explains the identity crisis modern day Turkish Cypriots are experiencing due to an imposition of mainland Turkish political agenda and views, thus distorting their true identity and history, which even through DNA, is proven to be closely linked to the Greek culture and history of inhabitation in the island from antiquity, when the Turkish nation was not even a mere thought yet.

You can't put everyone in a same basket. Over 40000 Turkmen had moved to the island after 1571 and that's why there is central asian haplogroup and Turkic DNA on the island. And Turkish Cypriots speak older version of Turkish and they have old Turkic culture such as Albasty.

There is no such thing as Turkish cypriots and we Turks are not related to these people. These people and their ancestors have abused the Ottoman system to avoid taxes and military service and also started to call themselves Turks to use our armed forces to carve up the island. They are not Muslims, nor Turks, but they are like unto Gypsies, but even Gypsies have some pride. They would sell their soul for money.

Turkish Cypriots are not from Turkey & they are different culturally. They are Cypriot & that is it’s own culture. My mum always told me thank you is cok mersi but when I visited my grandmother in Girne, a waiter in a restaurant told me that’s French & we don’t say that. Also the food & cooking is different from Turkey Turks food, it’s Cypriot food.

No matter where you are, every Cypriot has to say Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot, no just because of the political divide but because Cyprus is a tiny tiny island, people rarely hear of it, so you have to give them something to associate your identity to. I'm a Greek-Cypriot and I feel that you are my brothers and it is a shame that politics get in the way. I think that, as the old generations die and their hatred slowly dissipates, there will be an acceptance of the reality of the Turkish invasion and eventually a reunification. The technicality of the subject is that many Greek Cypriots have got papers that verify their ownership over 'TurkoCypriot' land and those papers will probably have to be voided when a solution comes. Furthermore, Turkish Cypriots and Turks are being taught false history about the reasons the invasion happened. Rauf Dektash in a BBC interview admitted that the explosion of the Turkish embassy was staged just so Turkey would have a reason to invade Cyprus to 'protect' the 11% Turkish population. Even more tragic is the fact that there has been an active suppression of people who spoke of this truth (Derviş Ali Kavazoğlu). With all due respect and honesty, we have to move on.... whatever happened happened. I'm a child of the new generation and I hope to see Cypriots all over smilling, regardless of creed. I love you my brothers, work with your politicians and we will too. Hopefully something can be arranged

My personal views for Cyprus, as a Turkish Cypriot, is that we can be recognised and free from the greater powers of Turkey and Greece. That's the bare minimum for me. Being recognised as a Turkish Cypriot and having a country to go to without discrimination and a massive UN Green Line. It is horrendous that people are arguing over this, 50 years later. Either we Reunite, or Parition. There is no third option. Reuniting means Greek and Turkish Cypriots get their forgotten land back, which is in favour of both. Partition means that our lovely country is split and Turkey and Greece leave and don't intervene with Cyprus. This includes the West too.

@@mariosmario1048 @Marios Mario The whole reason for wanting to make it a country/state is because the only two solutions for fixing Cyprus is Partition or Reunification as one country again. Reunification is probably the best. Greek Cypriots get their land in the North back, Turkish Cypriots get their land in the South back. But also you can't really blame just Turkey for occupying the North. Greece sending in 20k troops within 1963-1974, Enosis and Terrorism, etc. Of course, all of this is wrong. Greece, Turkey and the UK are in the wrong. If Greece and Turkey fuck off, then its just a little chance that Cyprus can be reunited. Both parts of the country has Stolen land. Whether its the Greeks or Turks. We're the new Generation of Cypriots and we need to fix Cyprus. Most of the hatred and fighting since 1974 comes from Families that suffered during the invasion. Both Greek and Turk Cypriots suffered from 1963-1974. We gotta fix Cyprus, but first we gotta stop the cycle of prejudice and hatred that Families will pass down in the future and present. Cyprus needs to be fixed. And only Cyprus can fix it. Not any other power. Both Turkey and Greece are to blame. Ignoring one's crimes means you are the issue. If you want to get exact, you can blame the UK for creating tensions between Turk and Greek Cypriots in order to keep, what they call, the "Unsinkable Aircraft Carrier."

I don't know if the Armenians of Cyprus have their own dialect, and I would appreciate it if you could let me know about this topic. I have also heard that many Turkish Cypriots spoke the Greek Cypriot dialect until 1974 when the Turkish authorities forbade the use of Greek. Is it true? I hope to overcome your identity crisis when every Cypriot abandons Greek or Turkish nationalism, xenophobia, intolerance, hatred and fear and form a new (just) Cypriot national identity respecting each other's cultural heritage. Unfortunately this thing has been projected from leaders of both sides for over 50 years to the whole world. Rauf Denktas' quote came to mind right now.... ''the only Cypriots in Cyprus are it's donkeys'' ....this mentality lived on for many decades in both sides and this is the result, an entire nation with identity crisis and nationality complex. I remember when I was a kid and I saw for the first time TCypriots on the TV and I turned to my mom and said, ''but they look Greek, why?'' Back then in my mind the image of a Greek person was that of a Cypriot. A few years later we went to Greece for a road trip, still a kid and my first time in Greece, this was Thessaloniki early 90's, I look at the people and I think, why do they look so different from 'us? Aren't we the same? I thought I was Greek, but all of these people look differed. Why do we look alike TCypriots but not like mainland Greeks? This is what you get when your indoctrination doesn't fit in the actual reality. Identity crisis. Who am I, what does being Cypriot means, who is the Cypriot, what is our nation, what are we etc. etc. it was very frustrating to me as a child, and am very happy that now days most of us say the one word, CYPRIOT, Cypriot is enough. We don't need anything more, we don't have to add anything else in front of it.

With the increased Turk population on the occupied part of Cyprus it's become hard to identify Turkish Cypriots from Turks. There are Turks who say are Cypriot but aren't. Turkish Cypriots are the people who lived with peace with Greek Cypriots before the invasion.

My question is this: are Turkish Cypriots in any way or form related to Turks or not? Are they Muslim or not? If you could prove to the Turkish people that Turkish Cypriots are 100% converts (as everyone in the video said that they do not feel any kind of kinship or relation to mainland Turks) Turks will simply leave the Island. But you must prove it to them, all Cypriots must say that there is zero Turkish element on the Island. For example, when I was in the occupied part, I saw no mosques, and I saw Turkish Cypriots doing Christian-like rituals. They also hated the adhan and the Imams sent by Turkey and did not know a single prayer, but they could recite Greek prayers!😌

@@azmhyr you are either lying or trolling. As a Turkish cypriot in north london (where there is a large turkish cypriot comminity) we absolutely consider ourselves turkish (but we specify we are cypriot turks) and we are muslims. Ive never met a christian turkish cypriot since we are a muslim people. The difference between turkish cypriots and mainland turks are there, but they are still similar. We speak the same language which is all that really qualifies someone to be called a turk. Also our history as cypriots do not take away from us being turkish since a lot of mainland turks actually had ancestry from europe from christian converts but it doesnt make them any less turkish because once you become a turkish speaking person = you are considered turkish. I had 2 mainland turkish friends who consider me turkish but from cyprus. Thats all. Stop spreading lies.

@@DeZAtuub That's interesting that the main factor qualifying people being considered Turkish is that they speak Turkish. I guess this is also what makes Azeris identify as Turkic too? It's interesting when compared with colonial languages like Spanish, French, English - lots of people speak these languages natively but wouldn't consider themselves ethnically/nationally related. I can't believe I was so ignorant about how many Turkish ppl in London are Cypriot!! Best wishes from an ignorant Brit xx

Question. Why don't you try to unite the island and abandon TRNC as an idea? Because as far as I am aware, the "legal" side is called Cypriot republic and that's it. It's not called the Hellenic Republic of Cyprus. While your "country" is called Turkish Republic of Cyprus, as if you want to associate yourselves with Turkey. Assuming that you don't, you'd better change that thing and unite.

Hi there, I watched this video with interest as we don’t get to hear real views from Turkish Cypriots. Unfortunately, I think the problem is down to stereotyping. As the Greek Cypriot side is the majority, people abroad will just associate being Cypriot as Greek Cypriot, particularly given the millions of people who have visited the south. However, in London where there is a large Turkish Cypriot community in addition to a Greek Cypriot community, I was once asked about my background. When I said Cypriot, they ask Greek or Turkish. And If I don’t tell anyone I am Cypriot they automatically assume I am from Pakistan, given that there is a large Pakistani community in the UK so don’t feel too bad about it. I believe even Turkish people think I am Turkish when interacting in other countries and often speak to me in Turkish.

Can I say with 100% certainty that these “Turkish Cypriots” have nothing in common with us from the mainland? Because as long we Turks feel some sort of an ethnic or religious bond with these people we will never be inclined to leave the island. What you must do is to convince the regular Turk that the Turkish Cypriot is an unrelated people that only happen to speak Turkish and only happen to be nominally Muslim (from what I gather the majority of the Turkish Cypriots are atheists). Then no Turkish person will support the presence of the Turkish army in Cyprus.

Oh but we are. Just looking at the settlement names in Turkey proves that a large number of Turks came to Turkey and displaced a lot of the native population. Otherwise we would not have been able to become the majority in these lands and just remain a minority to be absorbed into the natives. That's what happened to the Cumans and Avars who migrated to Europe. The cypriots however have taken on the Turkish moniker recently and for convenience. And they never truly identified with it in their hearts, but hated the Turks for their confused state as linobambaki.
