What many people don’t realize is that sugar was rationed during the First World War, so Turkish Delight truly was a rare treat to have at the time.

I was thinking the exact same thing- that during the war the odds of having anything with more than even a very small amount of sugar was very low. That’s why so many recipes from back then call for raisins, or other dried fruits, to substitute sugar.

I’ll never forget reading Narnia in 3rd grade and having Narnia Day in class. Our teacher brought in a whole wardrobe filled with coats and we walked through it to get into the classroom. She decorated the entire room in fake snow and made us Turkish Delight and hot chocolate. It’s a core memory and I’ll never forget it nor Mrs. Boomgarden :)

Not only does it require massive amounts of sugar, but rose water and orange blossom water, two of the more traditional flavors, were incredibly labor intensive to produce, not so much at the time of Narnia but it was long considered to be a treat only the very wealthy could afford centuries ago. Also my favorite way to make it is rose with chopped pistachio mixed in, or orange flavor with sliced almonds added and then rolled in shredded coconut
@cpruitt75
@cpruitt75 17 күн бұрын
Actually, making rose water at home is quite easy. Always make your own if you're going to actually make Turkish Delight vs buying it under many versions of the name sake. You just need to set up a small "still" in a pot of water on a stove element (or even on your gas bbq- anything that you can control temperature). The key is using roses/petals without pesticides exposure (many home gardeners don't use pesticides, any florists can obtain organic roses). Depending on how full the rose is, you may need as little as a 2 roses, or as many as 10. There are many videos on making rose water process, including an easy one using an overturned teapot lid in a pot of steaming water; just search for "how to make easy rose water." Have fun!
@emilyrobinson6080
@emilyrobinson6080 17 күн бұрын
@@cpruitt75 thats the thing though, for many centuries rose water was expensive because people didnt have easy access to the stills needed to distill the hydrosol, nor the rose petals themselves, nor the knowledge or thermometers necessary to properly distill. Thats what made it an expensive commodity back in the day. If youve got a simple alembic retort and some clean, fragrant roses its a lot easier to make today since the info is widely available and not kept guarded by various trades as it was back in the middle ages and renaissance

Also, considering Narnia took place during one of the world wars (i can't remember off the top of my head). Sugar was incredibly rationed. Imagine being a child living on war rations with literally no sugar at all and then this motherly type figure offers you whatever you want. The betrayal isn't as insane now.

As a Turk, I can say the original turkish delight is rose flavored that's why it's pink. It was done hundreds of years ago by crushing rose petals to use the juice in flavoring this dessert as well as many other things in our cuisine. Never heard of vanilla or orange flavored ones. Also we don't eat it frequently. Usually we eat it during special days and holidays during which we have big family gatherings or guests so we usually serve it in a small cup along with turkish coffee to our guests. If the coffee does not involve sugar in it (some people want sugar some don't), then you can eat it while drinking the coffee which balances the taste. Otherwise the dessert itself can be very sugary, at least for me.

When i was in 5th grade, i was going to a Christian school and our teacher was obsessed with Narnia. We read the entire series, watched the first two movies (this was the 2010-2011 school year), we even remade the second movie! We broke up into groups and were assigned scenes, my group got the scene where Susan has to show off her archery skills and i got to play Susan!! I wish i still had a copy of it😭😭 But for the first book, we were assigned a project based on the book, i was assigned to make turkish delight❤ it was rose flavored and i think my mom still has the bottle of rose water in the back of a cupboard somewhere😂😂😂

As a Turkish, I should recommend not to eat to anyone whoever has a proper diet. Tbh it has all the bad shit for you yet it is so good you wanna have another bite. Best advice forget these exist in the first place lol.

My 5th grade English teacher was born and raised in turkey. So when we read the lion the witch and the wardrobe, she brought homemade Turkish delight for the whole class to try! They were flavored with crushed rose petals and were delicious!

See I love teachers liked that. Mine read us a book where the character ate empanadas, so the next day she brought all the ingredients to make empanadas and our whole class got to make and eat them. It was a blast👍
