In this video I show you how to turn any image into an interactive visual using the native shape map in Power BI. Step by step you'll learn how to create a custom map using QGIS (a free tool) and how to adjust it to work within Power BI. With a few DAX tricks you can set the colors and transparency you want for each area.

Nice video. The colouring using measures was brilliant, didn't know you could this. There plugins in QGIS both for drawing rectangles and ovals, and for directly exporting topojson.

for german states there is already a map you can choose from the dropdown :) so you don't have to go through all of that effort

Might want to point out that one of the unique requirements for a topojson is that you cannot have overlapping polygons. Something to keep in mind when you make them. If I'm working with downloaded GIS data I usually apply a small negative buffer instead of trying to edit them out.

Thank you for this solution. I find that an easier solution would be to use the synoptic panel custom visual. Also could use inkscape to create svg and then synoptic visual.

Synoptic user for a few years now... Synoptic is definitely easier, BUT lacks the control you have with this video's techniques. As consumers become savvier with Power BI, they will want functionality that Synoptic does not provide, namely Drill Through (no right clicking) and conditional formatting. Bas has converted me.

thanks Bas for content and knowledge you share. I am just wondering if using Synoptic Panel (Custom viz created by OKViz) can solve this problem easier and faster? It allows user to upload picture and mark hot spots in the picture (in example small squares), theen you can add conditional formatting to change fill based on measure

How you come up with this is beyond me. First you knew you want something like splitting the image, then thought about map visual, then new about some bizarre program that let you create maps in GeoJSON format and then to another one to convert it to TopoJSON... Come man it require serious IT knowledge and creativity ;)

Good video, but the reality is it's workaround after workaround for a poorly implemented feature.

thanks Chris! 😊in other tools doesn't work so much differently .. not so much of a workaround in my view - just the adjustment so that the projection is correct is a bit annoying. Maybe you prefer the custom visual synoptic (process would be similar though)

this is just a simple example and not sure how to solve this with 3 square shapes instead. For me it is mind-blowing what options this opens as you can map any image you want.

@@HowtoPowerBI Yeah unfortunately most companies who are data conscious will not let employees just download third party software so they can get things to function in Powerbi :(
