I have a friend that's doing a year in jail and I sent her a coloring book. She has the worst crappy colored pencils in there.. anyways she says that she uses vaseline to dip her pencil in to get the most color out.. I pray she stays off drugs. She's such a great person when she is clean.

Lisa Wik Very sweet of if you to keep her in mind and to send her coloring books. I bet she appreciates that so much. I, too, hope that she is successful in her recovery and can stay off of drugs as well. As someone that struggled with addiction in my past, I know just how hard it can be and how so many people just don't understand how complex it is. Please continue to be a support for her, even if she has a setback, I cannot even begin to tell you just how important it is to feel as though not everyone has turned their backs on you when you're struggling like she is. I will be pulling for her. And for you! Sending love....💜

Fantastic video and tip! For people who are beginning with art/coloring/etc., the expense of professional quality (or sometimes even decent student quality) materials can be overwhelming. I started as one of those people and am now a full time artist using professional quality materials every day, BUT, I still use my cheap tricks, tips and materials every day, too. Who wants to spend more $$ when they don't have to??? Great art doesn't come from expensive materials - it comes from great artists!!! Bravo!

I actually like using cheaper colored pencils to lay down my base color. And them being less pigmented is often a benefit for base coloring. I decided to do this after going through basic colors (black, brown, green, blue) and not wanting to purchase another big set of pencils. So I use crayola pencils and do a soft base layer and build up with my more expensive pencils. I also by the “skin tone” packages of colored pencils because I use so much brown in my landscapes.

30 years ago, when I was homeless in Salt Lake City Utah, I would go on a hike and collect good looking rocks that were naturally smooth... Never occurred to me to try and buy them in an art supply store... I would buy the finest lead pencil I could find and draw an outline on the rock of flowers or whatever came to mind... Sometimes I would copy a picture I saw in a publication somewhere... I bought pencils like these you are showing and I got a few empty cups out of the trash... I took a knife and I turned into powder each color... I bought Elmer's school glue and I put one clear coat of it on the rock I was going to paint... Let it dry about 20 minutes Then I could see my pencil drawing through the glue after it dried... I would take water and toothpicks and would color paint the rock tracing my drawing under the glue... Let completed picture dry overnight and then - this last step is important - paint a sealing coat of Elmers School Glue over it all... Then you sell it... I kept my prices under ten dollars and people couldn't believe I was selling my work so cheap... But if they put their rock picture outdoors their artwork on it will eventually be destroyed from exposure to the weather... It kept me in coffee money and grab a bite in the restaurants whenever I wanted to... Beats standing in line for food stamps and jobs were just not available... Worked a lot of temp jobs though... My bottom line to this long comment is that if you use these pencils for something OTHER than their intended purpose, things will work out well for you... I told people I got the color into the stone by using "masonry pigment "... I had and have NO IDEA if there even is such a thing...

Your very creative & clever!! Its inspiring to hear how even under such difficult living & financial circumstances you remained motivated & creative to do whatever you could to survive & move on to a better condition for yourself. So many do not understand that there are situations that we cannot control that could put anyone of us in a similar situation at any given moment. Were human & we make mistakes, but above all no one wants or deserves to be in that low of a position during their lifetime, but it happens more often than we know. Over the years the one thing I have learned in life is it's not so much the specific downfall that dictates our life's direction & future as much as it's how we cope or not with the aftermath of it. I just wanted to say I really admire & respect you for wanting to help yourself out of that by earning money with your artistic creations vs taking foodstamps, etc. Until now I thought that kind of mentality had been long since extinct. I grew up in an era where people were ashamed of needing help or welfare & most would do whatever they could to avoid it altogether or to only have it temporarily & got off of it as soon as they could. It had a stigma attached to it that effected many people's pride. Now in today's world we have the exact opposite. If your not on some kind of support your the odd man out. You could definitely teach a class in personal perseverance & how to survive in less than perfect conditions. Thanks for sharing your story here. Its refreshing to hear something so positive for a change. Wishing you & yours nothing but happiness in the future...🌝 Who would of thought you could get this much of a philosophy on life from a video about buying Dollar Store colored pencils & improving their color quality tutorial video?!🌝

Actually there is something like that. That's how they add pigment to grout, concrete and drywall stucco. It's basically what Michael Angelo did. The Frescos were made pimento mixed into the stucco.the stucco was still moist when they added the pigment dye. It totally combined. That's why he could only do small sections he could finish in one sitting. Check it out, all the old masters' work. Art history is really fascinating.

I've used vitamin e oil as well as warmed (to a soft waxy consistency) coconut oil... As well as castor (for thicker/pulpy paper or denim canvas). My favorite is vinegar (careful, some bleed or leech, or otherwise break down if too long) it makes them like the water color pencils I've seen, or like a controllable pastel/chalk/pasty-créme texture for me... or heat. (Like highschool eyeliner users use a lighter for that extra khol look)

What an interesting subject-For the longest time I couldn't understand why some said that Crayola can't layer or blend, as that is what I started out with and colored with them almost a year before I was able to get the 72 set of Primas. I learned how to layer and blend with them without the need of using anything additional....AND I get some really great saturation with them. I now know that those who say that are either 1) heavy handed and can't get light layers to build the color, 2) not patient enough to build layers or 3) are listening to what "professionals" are saying , who also are trying to get quick results with them. Crayola pencils are great to use: IF you aren't heavy handed, IF you don't have arthritis and therefore your hand hurts from using them or if you are patient....because they definitely require patience and a light hand. On the other hand, I do have other cheap pencils that I've hated and have tried using other blending mediums...still not a great fan of the pencils...but that is okay because I now have my beloved Prismas, Schperrir Farbens, Guanhui Hero and my Crayola. This was a great video for those who can't afford a better quality pencil set though or already have cheap pencils and still have a hard time blending!

When I use mineral spirits to blend pencil pigments, I dip a paper stump or tortllion into the spirits and then make sure that the stump feels dry to the touch. The stump will turn a darker gray where it was exposed to the spirits. Then blend. You will never get streaks. If you are getting streaks with this technique, you are using too much mineral spirits. It takes such a small amount of the spirits to actually blend the pigments that a small can/jar of the spirits will literally last for years.

I keep cotton balls soaked with oms in a sealed baby mason jar, you could drill a pencil sized hole in the lid if you wanted to further contain the vapors. Thanks for blowing my mind and thinking outside the box again. Oh yeah, Maybe don't sharpen the dipped pencils til they are dried. Happy day😁😁😁

I own a set of Arteza. They are decent, but I would not compare them to Prismacolor or Polychromos. The Arteza pencils vary in hardness from harder than Polychromos to a little harder than Prismacolor. I put them in my Polychromos box; I found out that some of them were very long and others were shorter. I would recommend them for adult coloring, but I question whether they are artist grade seeing that they have no track record. I did not have to use anything with them.

I believe that for the most part there's a reason why similar products have extreme price differences. And that it's usually the variation in quality. I try to stick with the general theory of purchasing the best I can afford at the time or instead go without until I can afford a better brand. I'm a firm believer that it's an individual preference & financial thing for each of us. There are certain things I have no problem "going cheap" on & buying at Dollar Tree while other things like colored pencils I'd rather wait til I can afford a better brand.To me, the best choice is whatever works best for you, your budget & your uses for it. Simply not worth bothering with the super cheap pencils & pens. They cost less for a reason. Save up & get yourself products you'll enjoy using. Visually there's a vast difference too, as better pigments are used in the more expensive products, giving a more vivid end result. Yellow will look yellow, not mustard...& red won't look orange!

I don't think I'll go dirt cheap, but I get great results from my Crayola pencils and Zenacolor's pencils. They aren't the greatest, but it gets the job done. I have a few Prismacolor pencils - just singles for colors I want - they're good, but they're like 3 bucks a pencil, so I only have very few of them. I love drawing video game characters - mostly fantasy and RPG game characters (Final Fantasy, Zelda, Secret of Mana, etc.) but I have a few Mario Bros. drawings as well as a lot of Pokemon drawings - people and the Pokemon themselves. Now that was cool. I was starting to freak when you dipped the pencil into the mineral spirits. Thank you for showing me that my Prismas or my other budget pencils can be dipped, and that my budget pencils can still be used and produce a good color. Have a nice day Lori. :-)

I bought the prisma colour pencil sharpener when I bought my pc pencils...Successful sharpening happens when your pencil is straight for the complete revolution of the pencil, harder than you think. My pencils were always breaking until i read about this and tried it...also if you have dropped your pencils or been rough with them you may have broken the leads in them.

Have you tried the Arteza colored pencils from Amazon? Everytime I see them their calling me to buy them, meantime I finally took the plunge and bought the 150 Prismacolor set, I also have Derwent colorsoft and their watercolor set (haven't tried them yet), but I first started using Staetler colored pencils for a long time before I finally got the PC, I've been using the Staetler graphite pencils for a long time and when I finally got into doing cp I tried theirs. They are much harder but have great control and don't crumble, Staetler graphite are made very well with a sealed inner core. For lighter graphite work I use the Derwent sets, I'm not too crazy about them but nothing beats Staetler for graphite! 😄

I heard baby oil worked but honestly I don't like to add stuff like oil to the paper. I don't know what it will do in the long run. baby oil isn't archival.

Not a great way, but use a UV Sealer. The cheaper the pencil, the better quality sealer I would use. Brush And Pencil has a good final fixative.

Hi, I'm in Australia, I don't know the brand name but we have colouring-in pencils here that you add water to them, called "water colour pencils", first you draw your picture then you paint over it with a brush and water, I've never used them but I've seen them on TV and in shops, give it a go with these pencils, maybe that's why they are no good as colouring-in pencils. Should say on the boxes they came in.

If I use a cheap pencils, I take a marker or highlighters for a base color and then color with the cheap pencils, that's what I do, it helps especially if you don't want to use mineral spirits.
@ColorMyWorld
@ColorMyWorld 5 жыл бұрын
I do that with black backgrounds. I color light grey first with a magic marker and then use the black. The problem with using the marker method too much is you lose the ability to put in white highlights without using posca.

@@paulacarter8119 that is weird because I don't have that problem with them. I just use the same techniques I've learned in videos for blending and layering. I use them in adult coloring books such as by Johanna Basford.

@jennymullins593
@jennymullins593 5 жыл бұрын
Mineral spirits are dangerous, not just for our lungs, but I've read they damage brain cells too. It best to have it in a jar that can be covered, in between dippings. It's also important that you never use it in a room with heating going at the same time...it speeds up the transition from liquid to gaseous form, making it more dangerous quicker. The other safety tip is to have good cross ventilation...open windows & have a fan on, if possible, rotating. Air is better circulated, minimizing the risks to your health. I avoid using the stuff altogether. There are better options for applying colour!
