First of all, I enjoy every Sunday night chat with Clack and I have learned so much. Thank you for this video, I was having trouble lining up my projects on the honeycomb but this video cleared that up for me. This is the technique I will be using from now on. I also ordered a small supply of cutting boards. Great content sir. Kenny Tampa, Florida

Great video! I tried to ask you a question at the Expo last weekend but man, you had a busy booth! I'm hoping to buy a laser engraver pretty soon but still researching what I want.

I'm sorry I didn't get the chance to help you in person at the expo. It was very busy most of the day, which was great to see! There are a lot of laser options out there right now and with the holidays coming up, I'm sure there will be some deals to be had!

The comments below are the way I feel also. You did a very nice job showing your techniques for making engraved cutting boards. Great Job! I have not looked at all 43 comments, but I see you have made a very nice smoke enclosure. I made the mistake of buying one. It is massive and it cost too much also. Do you have plans/dimensions for the box you made. I also have an xTool D1 Pro. Thanks, Jerry....

good tutorial - I have a A20Pro laser - the question I have for you what would make the settings on this diode laser
@danielprovenzano163
@danielprovenzano163 9 ай бұрын
I tried engraving on an acacia board for the first time, I used the setting you said in the video with my Xtool 20w D1 Pro. It came out fine, but I would like it engraved a little deeper, would I just increase the power to 85% or more to get it deeper. I don't need it to be darker, the acacia wood is dark enough. I've only done bamboo boards in the past, so this was new to new, thanks for all the information you provided in the video. Loved the video.

You can play with increasing the power or slowing the speed some to get your desired effect. You can also try a crosshatch engrave which may clear out more material.

Hi, Great video... Thank you. What would the settings be if we work in mm per/sec?
@Vintauri

Anytime you want to convert settings from mm/min to mm/sec just divide by 60.

What kind of oil do you use on your boards?😊

I’m a new user, I loved the your videos and this idea and wanted to try it on my atomstack a20 pro, using lightburn 1.4.03 software. I’ve run into something very interesting I was hoping you could help with. My image burns backwards from what is on the screen, so right side is left side and text is backwards. Any idea what setting might correct this? Hopefully this is just a setting I missed. Thanks for the easy to follow video.
@Vintauri
@Vintauri 8 ай бұрын
Check to see where your origin is set on your device settings. For the Atomstack it should be in the front left corner. If it’s the front right or rear it will reverse or flip the image compared to what is displayed in lightburn.

@@Vintauri thanks for getting back to me! Is the setting next to “start from”, if so is current position, user origin, or absolute coords the best setting? I will give that a try tomorrow morning.

Do you apply mineral oil on the board after to preserve it? Also, does it take away the burnt wood smell?
@Vintauri
@Vintauri 8 ай бұрын
The oil helps even out the engraving just a bit and does seal the wood back up so that it's less likely to dry out and crack. I don't recommend using it for food after engraving, but they could use the back side to serve things on still if they wanted and the food grade oil gives me some peace of mind in case they do actually use it.

I have some acacia cutting boards I want to engrave. Should I prep the boards first? Sand? Should I seal it after? With what? They are store bought from HL, if that matters
@Vintauri
@Vintauri 6 ай бұрын
It depends on if they had any finish applied already. Generally, cutting boards like this are treated with a type of butcher block oil and not a heavy resin finish. You should be okay just engraving through that unless it's really soaked in it and then you may see some issues with engraving. Otherwise it's up to you if you feel the need to sand it before finishing. I would add some oil afterwards though to help reseal the wood, and some would caution about not using the engraved side for food as it can leave food oils in the engraving that can turn rancid or grow bacteria.

You have great content but I have to ask why do you and other KZfaq content creators have to specify XTOOL products, it may give new laser users the idea that you have to have a specific laser to create products. I feel going down this road you and other video creators are becoming salesman for certain lasers.
@Vintauri

I try to be informative about the project as well as talk about the tool being used. In other project videos, I've had people ask what laser is it, or what power is it. So I try to make sure I point that out to make it clear what I'm using. I never want to come across as just a salesman for any brand. My main goal is to inspire people to try different things with their workshop tools no matter what brand it is.

I don't feel that way at all. I've seen your other content using other brands and as a consumer, thanks for the comparisons. I did go with the D1 pro 20w based on reviews and quality of the product & lightburn software. Keep up the good work Steve.

While they are a little bit more than when I snagged them, they are still a great deal for premade cutting boards. I could not start to make them myself for that price. The value is in being able to personalize them for sale or gifts!

Good video, but you're working way too hard on centering the piece on the laser. All you need to do is clamp down a piece of cardboard, actually cut out the cardboard the size of the board, and then place the board inside the cardboard cutout on the laser bed. I personally just take a picture of the work piece, trace it in light burn and then cut that trace out of the cardboard to lay my piece onto the laser bed. Perfect alignment every time and repeatable. Again, thanks for the video.

Yeah I would do that if I was going to do more than a couple. But on one offs I just use the framing function rather than burn up extra material.

I prefer watching videos with XCS not LightBurn
@Vintauri
@Vintauri 9 ай бұрын
While XCS continues to get better, I've always run into limitations with it. I started using Lightburn many years ago, and most new lasers support it as well. I would encourage you to give the 30 day free trial a workout and you may find things you like about it more than XCS. That being said, I will be working some with XCS in future videos as well.

Lightburn works great for any laser, so if you ever switch laser types like I did, everything you’ve worked on works for your next laser… except obviously the power and speed settings of course. All your graphics and layouts port well. The software is very easy to use as well and very powerful.
