@@datachu to be fair my old razer blade was similar pricing to the MacBooks from 4 years ago and it’s actually still chugging along. I think once you buy a laptop over a thousand dollars the stereotype of cheap windows laptops drops off a cliff. Even less nowadays with the ryzen laptops at 600-700.

@@smugler1 Why is the separate hardware dongle needed for the Windows version anyway tho? Like, what does it do? And why can't they just update the firmware of whatever the fuck you just paid $100+ for? No seriously, what snake oil is ACTUALLY INSIDE THE DONGLE? I can't find a single photo or video of the inside, no one has asked this question and there's no FAQ question on their site about it whatsoever. I mean look at this video closer. In wired mode the cable goes directly between the two PCs, not through some port on the dongle? And how come Apple can achieve half the latency without any dongles? Why is the claimed latency on their website not even remotely accurate and the actual latency LTT measured around the same as Miracast (which also supports touch)? Does this not all smell a little fishy in the air? Cause I'm smelling a scam right now... And it's a real strong stench too

To be fair, x11 over the network is really slow and not designed for modern GTK/Qt apps (and fundementally works a lot differently than this, since its rendering using the remote GPU and just streaming video). There is a windows version of Luna Display coming soon, and I think the main point was to hopefully convince people to stop throwing away perfectly useable hardware for shiny new hardware that creates more unnecessary E-waste. EDIT: Since some people still don't get why Linus hosted this. Because there exists a windows version of Luna display Linus was interested enough to host this product. It's as simple as that. Now the macadress guy previously did a video on a jerry rigged together touch screen macbook, the product can be used for both windows and Mac OS laptops but windows laptop already come with touch screens pre-installed so Linus would just end up roasting apple over that, and the idea isn't all that interesting. Instead he wanted an Apple users perspective on why they don't want a touch screen macbook. Due to changing their productivity flow or other reasons as to why they don't like 2 in 1 laptops. And why they'd rather have a Mac and an iPad separately.

Linus! You need to start advocating for Linux support with these kinds of things. Please, don't be complicit with the desktop extinction. Help bring what might be our only refuge into common acceptance. Many people put up with awful issues from Windows and macOS. So excluding Linux is a non starter. Please, even if it's at the end, start commenting on how you'd like to see official Linux support for things.

I've once had a PC long time ago but because of situation and uses its not used anymore, and me and my family prefers laptop instead. One day, early class of my college, I felt overwhelmed with all the things I need to open at once to do some work. Then I realize my old 2006 LG monitor from my PC is still stored somewhere. So I found it, bought VGA to HDMI adaptor, and voila, my assignment and classes are way more manageable.

Interesting video - thanks for letting us know about Luna. I purchased iDisplay for my iPad (1st Generation) back in 2011 (99 cents!) - it allows your iPad to act as a second (or third, or fourth) monitor. I now use TeamViewer, which is free when trying to control PCs on your home network (I control my Windows and Linux computers...I don't have any Macintosh computers)...doesn't have the ability to serve as a secondary display, but great when you need to connect into a PC that doesn't allow connection to it via RDP (example: Linux machines without xRDP installed or Windows Home).

Using Screen Sharing over ethernet or thunderbolt ( wifi works but is quite a low frame rate for me ). Although not as fast as true Target Display Mode, it does have the benefit of working on any Mac (iMac, MacBook of any age), shared keyboard and mouse, windowed or full screen and fast file sharing by dragging and dropping between windows on both systems. You just need a 4k HDMI Dummy ( if using a MacBook you'll need a USB 3 version or a dongle) these usually cost around or less than £10 / $10 / 10€ on Amazon or eBay or you can mirror without one. I use this method as a second monitor for my Mac Mini M1 alongside an actual 4k monitor and works a treat.
